The hawks looked good today, 43% is not an impossible 3pt% to keep up and the more concerning trend is the sixers FT% and their perimeter defense. Simmons has to figure out how to get a basket otherwise the sixers are sunk. Embiid looked like he was in serious pain late in the game, I'm concerned about him going forward. Also, the Hawks were missing their best perimeter defender in Hunter, if he comes back this series it's a different game.

On top of all that, I don't think the refs will swallow their whistles like that did during that "comeback" for the rest of the series.

Gotta give props to Embiid, dude is playing through a knee injury and was dominant. Also Credit to the Hawks for winning despite Embiid's performance.

The FT's definitely ruined the flow of the game for me though

I dont get why in the final two minutes you can just hammer and smother the ball handler but you can't do it in the other 46 minutes... makes no sense... and why the sixers played Embiid 38 minutes on an acl tear while down more than 20 points? It was a strange game.

If it was an ACL tear, he would be in a wheelchair

The Hawks reverted closer to the mean as the game wore on

The game blew out when they were shooting well over 50% from 3 on high volume

Not sustainable

The refs also swallowed their whistle on Hawks’ moving screens for most of the game

What a pathetic showing by Philadelphia. Their ballmovement was terrible. The ball was moving way too slow and also the Hakws played great defense. Meanwhile the Hawks were hitting every shot. This game was over at halftime.

I like the Hawks to pull the upset. Young is making it look very easy. He's just blowing by Green at will. Capela is very underrated. Good shooters in Bogdanovic and Huerter.

Good job Doc.

Simmons can't guard Young, he's just not quick or crafty enough to keep up. Trae will foul him out.

Simmons and Curry will be exposed for their weaknesses. One in half court offense and the other being switched on relentlessly
It's about time for this awful take to die. We have a 132.7 Ortg with Ben on the court and a horrendous 100.6 with him on the bench. His passing makes his teammates better but because he doesn't score 20 plus a game we get terrible takes like this.

so about that awful take. didn't Embiid and Simmons have good games yet the Hawks still won a road game?
Again. Awful take. Simmons had a good game. Doc Rivers is the only one to blame with his awful all bench lineup. Our starters were much better than theirs. That stretch where the bench allowed the Hawks to go up by 20 lost us the game.

or in other words the 76ers absolutely can't beat the Hawks without Embiid... you yourself blame the bench production

Embiid looked exactly as I've seen him look against us. He has energy for about 2 and a half to 3 quarters. In the 4th, he's dead tired. I'm not sure that the injury is affecting him, didn't see him move any different than his usual.
Good assessment:

I think the Sixers will go more Thybulle on Trae in lieu of Danny Green. I don't know how successful it will be 1v1 though, he'll still need some kind of help.

Good job Doc.

He’s probably trying to keep Simmons out of foul trouble.

What about Thybulle? Why is a 33yo Green the primary defender on the Hawks' best player? Simmons and Thybulle are supposed to be all-NBA defenders, but Green is getting the assignment on Trae? Horrible gameplanning.

bc with ben and thybulle on the court, sixers become easier to defend.

Who said they both have to be on the court at the same time? And besides, the #1 goal for the Sixers in this series should be limiting Trae. If that means sacrificing some offense, so be it.

Do you think having Green as the primary defender on Trae is actually a good idea when Simmons and Thybulle are the Sixers' best perimeter defenders?

Trae Young quarter by quarter:

Q1: 5-7 FG, 12 pts - guarded by Danny Green
Q2: 3-6 FG, 13 pts - guarded by Danny Green
Q3: 1-6 FG, 6 pts - defensive adjustments - guarded by Ben Simmons and Mattise Thybulle (high trapping and double on PnR)
Q4: 2-4 FG, 4 pts - guarded mainly by Ben Simmons and Mattisse Thybulle, with hints of Danny Green

Altogether:

1st half: 8-13 FG, 25 pts - when guarded one on one by Danny Green in the first half.
2nd half: 3-10 FG, 10 pts - when guarded by Ben Simmons and Mattisse Thybulle in the second half.

I think moving forward we'll see lots of Simmons and Thybulle (and some Green) on Young with high trapping and doubling on PnR.

You are neglecting why Danny Green was the primary defender on Trae, though, even through much of the second half. Doc tried to put Simmons on him and Ben immediately picked up 2 fouls. The primary defender should be Green or Thybulle while Simmons rotates over to help, but asking Ben to play him 1 on 1 isn't going to work: Trae is just too quick and will either get past him or trap Simmons into some bad fouls.

A team is worse without its MVP level player? Really going out on a limb there aren't you. Bench production is fine. Five bench players on the floor together is not fine. Our five bench lineup went -14 in 6 minutes.

I mean, Trae Young is probably the worst defender in the NBA and he ended up with 3 fouls, while Simmons, who's an all-NBA defender, ended up with just one more (4 fouls) and Mattisse only had 2. There's a lot of fouls to be used on Trae and rough him up a little. He was too comfortable in the 1st half.

Regardless, it's foolish to guard Trae one-on-one, nobody can do it (only possible in small stretches). Atlanta will just run pick and roll all day. The defender gets blocked on the pick and Trae keeps shooting freely.

Young has to be defended by either a) trapping him or b) doubling him off a pick and roll. It'll be a collective effort for sure, but he only shot 30% from the field in the 2nd half when this strategy was implemented. You put a couple of all-NBA defenders on him and keep forcing the others to shoot like Ray Allen and break records by hitting threes like yesterday.

I think things will regress back to the mean.
