Indiana just fired their coach after one season! Why can't this team have the same accountability for their players and coaches? This is a cutthroat business, it does not warrant second and third chances.
As Einstein once said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.” Surely, a five-year sample size is good enough to understand whether a coach will get you to the promised land.
Interestingly enough, Katz (on his podcast) claimed that franchises viewed Indiana as a cautionary tale. They had a reasonably solid coach in McMillan. They grew dissatisfied, and brought in the new guy. The New Guy was a mishire and an utter debacle; now they're rudderless. Meanwhile, their former coach is looking great with a competitor.
McMillan had a better track record than Brooks. But a risk averse team might look at that sequence of events, acknowledge the Wizards' strong finish, and decide to stick with they devil they know. YMMV.
Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.
