Sixers vs Lakers, 1995

Post#1 » by NPZ » Fri Jun 11, 2021 7:50 pm

Interesting game I was able to recoop after losing it many years ago. Sixers prevailed. Crowd initially geeked over hometown fave Eddie Jones (4 yrs at Temple) and booed Shawn Bradley, but eventually Bradz played a pretty good game as did Barros. Those Barros years always kept my interest back then tho I was a Laker fan then, too. He blew up in Philly after being an afterthought in Seattle -- Sedale Threatt had done the same thing after West traded for him and he took Magic's place in 91/2. I remember a Pacers at Phila gm that Barros won at the buzzer on a squared shot off of a lob pass. He was in the air when he caught it and he just shot it in the air w/ his standard form. Miracle shot near the corner of the arc.

Eddie Jones was incredible. Fun fact, you know is a cousin of Eddie Jones? Tyrese Haliburton.

All I get out of watching a 1995 76ers-Lakers game is that the 76ers took Shawn Bradley over Penny Hardaway and Sharone Wright over Eddie Jones in consecutive drafts. SMDH

Who was B.J. Tyler?

Looks like he was dominant at Texas. Was drafted by us #21, played his rookie year with us, and then was out of the NBA. What happened there?

Prior to the 1995-96 NBA season, Tyler was selected by the Toronto Raptors in the 1995 expansion draft. According to journalist Chris Young's book Drive, Tyler accidentally fell asleep with a pack of ice on his ankle, causing severe nerve damage. Robbed of the speed that his game was based on, he was subsequently forced to retire.[1]

Garbage? Pff. At least you guys loved your college players. I root for UCLA and I usually hate the people who come out of there. Reggie Miller, Baron Davis, and Russell Wesbrook. I couldn't stand any of them. Yeech. Reggie was straight villainous. I gotz no luv for Kevin Love.

Jerry West LOOVED that 10th pick of Eddie Jones because Eddie was the best player in the top 10 after Big Dog, Grant Hill, and Kidd, imo. That pick panning out so well added to West's gravitas and ego. He refused to let go of him even with Jerry Buss telling him to. Finally got Rice for Eddie and Campbell. Rice lasted about 1.5 years and Phil Jax didn't like him because he played no D. Sh happens, Lloyd.

I was just about to post that BJ Tyler was Zhaire before Zhaire. He was one of those picks where the team had to keep harping on one standout attribute (speed for Tyler, athleticism for Zhaire), to obscure the fact that the guy had limited basketball skills.

Tyler was a sniper at Texas. I remember that boy going off in the tournament one year. We drafted him and nothing ever became of him. I thought for sure he was going to have a good career in the league. I remember that 95 squad. Willie Burton, Vernon Maxwell I think came the following year, Trevor Ruffin. As OP stated, Barros kept the interest. He was so fun to watch. I remember him dropping fifty in a game. Think he made an all star team that year too.

Tyler had limited basketball skills?

3.5 three point makes per game, 6.3 assists, 3.1 steals per game

Those are wild metrics.

Did you actually watch him play for the Sixers? Kid was fast...in a straight line. Couldn’t create his own shot. You would have hated him.

He was definitely a different player when he got to the NBA. His limitations showed up. He looked like a star coming out of Texas for sure though. In the NBA he was just a little guy that could shoot, but was a liability everywhere else. He could have been like Dana Barros I guess. I had high hopes for him, but I was only 13 years old at the time lol.

That's Willie "53 points" Burton. I'd actually watch that game just to see how Willie pulled that off. It's like the mythical 30/19 game by Kwame when he was w/ the Wizards. Footage of that game doesn't exist much like w/ Wilt's 100 pt gm.

Ruffin was the last man cut on the Lakers' preseason squad that year and the Sixers picked him up. Phila actually beat the Lakers by a point in 96 and Ruff was in there. I have the recap of that, too. I got all the recaps. I post losses, too. That's one of the things that separates me from the rest. That's why I got the Jeanie Buss dude wantin me to call him on Mon so he can cop footage from me for that Laker history series they're doin. Note in final play, a Sixer did a Vlade slap of the ball away from the basket and it worked. Vlad somehow did that right into Horry's hands while it's a surefire winning play 99.999% of the time.

Why did the Lakers undervalue George Lynch so much at this time?

Wasn’t Shawn Bradley in the movie Space Jam, where the NBA players surreptitiously had all their athletic skills taken from them? But they all got them back again by the end of the film. Except Shawn.

Apparently, Barros dropped 50 on the Rockets in ‘95...and we lost by 29 :D

I was 17 in 93. I had as good a grasp of the game as any other teen, but I saw Lynch's entire LA stint. The basic answer is that he sucked. He never panned out. He was a tweener PF and even by those standards, he was no C. Weatherspoon. The reason LAL took him is because the 93 Draft ended at the 11th pick (Allan HOU to DET) and LAL had #12. Lynch was the best player available and coming off of an NCAA championship vs MICH. The real pick was Van Exel at 37. Nick was a lottery player and one of the top guards in the draft and he F'd up so bad during the workout period that he dropped to a stone to 37. And they all knew he had anger issues before that. What did he do? He didn't show up to two workouts and gave BS excuses and while working out for George Karl, Karl told him to run a sprint again and Nick said somethin like "You run it". I remember Karl on TV saying, "You know.....coaches talk to each other..." Karl was clearly pissed and probably told all his friends how Nick behaved. He probably sent a group email to all the GMs and coaches. Since West had to settle w/ Lynch, he took the chance on NVE and Nick was a combo of excellence and anger. It took him to be traded to a 15 win Nuggets team before he looked into the mirror and changed his ways (like the Michael Jax song says).

One thing w/ Georgey that annoyed me was that he had gimpy alligator arms. This is but one example proving that fact. He missed two gimmies and didn't hit the rim on either. Later in his career w/ Philly, he was better, but that took years and Lynch/Peeler were dumped to VAN to facilitate the Shaq trade. He badmouthed LA for trading him to Vancouver, but he didn't produce inflated numbers on an expansion team.

Did they have Email in 93? Much less a group email? I don't remember Email being a thing at all until about 1995 or so. I could be wrong.
