Malone has had a tumultuous tenure, lots of series losses after leading 3-2. I’ll concede not having their most important closer complicates the situation and likely buys him time. He probably indeed gets another year due to murray’s injury but he doesn’t have the championship or the reputation of rick carlisle so i think he will bare minimum be on thin ice next year and be told “you better win once we are healthy.”

Ok, but I think Cuban's dictum makes much sense. Don't replace a ribeye unless you have a filet in waiting. It is a variant of the grass is not always greener. Proven team chemistry matters.

I really think D'Antoni is the best choice if the intention is to bring back more or less the same team and
expect a different result. The more traditional coach is going to need the pieces they need for the team
to play solid defense.

Agreed but the flip side to this is olshey sold us on needing to improve on defense, hiring an offensive coach makes him look odd here but he also seems to like flip flopping more than a politician

One can say Olshey is a politician for he certainly can sell his vision on the team to team ownership

We know from history, Woj is a media source that Olshey trusts and is maybe the only media source that gets any inside information outside of formal press releases. We also know, Woj reports from the same media mill the other idiots report from.
This report sounds believable because it has specifics. I know, it says the source is claimed to be ESPN and probably isn't a leak to Woj by Olshey. Still, if true, it can't be controlled by Olshey because who knows how many Nets office personnel could leak.

There is no offensive and defensive head coaches. D'Antoni would do a great job. He has excelled throughout his long and successful career at finding his teams advantages, his opponents weaknesses, and managing the complex people management challenges. He is a perfect candidate who isn't narrowly focused on any part of the game. He can oversea the whole game.

I'm not against a new inexperienced coach, but there is a risk in that path. One of these new untested names that gets a chance is going to be the worst coach in the league.

Not only is there risk, there is significant risk. There are a lot more bad and mediocre coaches, especially from the player-to-coach pool, than good or great coaches so statistics really work against you.
D'Antoni is probably the safest option. A known quantity. Minimal growing pains. Can run him for a year or two or three but we're not looking at another 9-10 year tenured coach. It doesn't really set us up for any sort of "new era" but mostly a tack-on to the previous era.
I'm fairly interested in Hammon, cant hardly beat the pedigree of being groomed by Pop so she is very qualified. Unfortunate but its likely true she has had to work much harder to break into such a male dominated industry and that speaks volumes to me about her passion, grit and determination.
But I can see how a situation like Portland, a veteran team with some deep flaws and a huge win-now pressure, is not ideal for a young coach and could unfairly taint their reputation compared to getting a younger team to develop and grow with and show their long-term coaching abilities. Since she knows she basically has an in with the SAS I would be a little surprised if she jumped ship.

I do like the fact the Mike D came out publicly stating he was interested in the job, but I do worry his ability to improve the defense. Becky Hammon is another coach that is likely near the top of many lists, and of course I like Udoka, but I have some concerns with both of them too. Then there's Chauncey...
Interesting that Olshey is already active and not waiting for the season to end, like he previously stated he would do. I like it. I'm actually starting to get pumped about the possibilities for next season, but we MUST get the right coaching staff in place first. If we fail there, the players we get won't matter much.
Dame's prime window remains over the next 2-3 years. Hopefully Jody will allow Olshey a two year plan of some sort, with the needed financial support to go all in.... sort of. This includes dollars for the best coaching staff available, regardless of cost.

Yeah, didn't Olshey say he wouldn't seek permission to talk to candidates still playing games? And, he wouldn't seek permission to talk to candidates until all candidates where available.
Edit: if Olshey is interviewing D'Antoni, all these standards have been violated. Maybe, standards are just loosely followed guidelines.

Billups? Yes.
D’Antoni? 2nd choice out of 5 rumored.
Hope it goes efficiently. He who snoozes, loses. Waiting to interview until the playoffs are over for the Nets or Clippers was never an option.

Meanwhile as we discuss a limited coach field a grade A gm donnie nelson who could build a team into a legit contender sits on the market as olshey sticks around. Insanity, id love to bring nelson in as a “olshey you’re on thin ice” sort of hire aka executive assistant/ assistant gm/ president sort of role. It’d be an awfully nice/ political way to strongly encourage neil to seek work elsewhere

Why do people have coaching preferences for individuals who have 0 head coaching experience? What on earth are you basing your opinion on?

I honestly thought that Stotts was going to break Ramsey's tenure record for the Blazers. I seem to remember reading somewhere that historically, teams that move on from long-tenured coaches tend to see pretty big dips in wins. That and there tends to be a period of fairly rapid coaching changes over then next few years...

Alarming statistic but not shocking. Teams that fire long tenured coaches are usually having issues beyond coaching which unfortunately is like Portland as we managed to hold onto our biggest problem (olshey) while forgoing someone in stotts who wasn’t great at the end but that is all secondary to the mismanagement of this team
