I jokingly told myself that they have some extremely expensive players at positions of somewhat need (3B/1B) that they chose to overpay...I'm not even sure I'd want them unless the Cards are willing to pay down a bunch of salary to get out of this mess.
I'm all for tying up several years beyond your window into guys like Yelich, Braun, Cain, etc. but you need to actually have a roster you think you can win with. The Cards generally have a high-ish payroll, but they are dug in pretty deep now because they added Arenado to a surprisingly weak roster.
Now they get the honor of paying Arenado $30 million for 1 WAR 2-3 years from now
