What to do with Johnny Estrada

Post#1 » by Comet » Wed Sep 19, 2007 1:48 am

I hate him as much as anybody here. He's a butcher behind the plate, he's slow as hell, he has no work ethic, and he does nothing with runners in scoring position. I say trade him.

One night shouldn't alter our decision-making. If we did that, then Chad Moeller would still be here.

Well what other options do the Brewers have at the Catcher position?

Did Ivan Rodriguez and Paul Lo Duce resign with their respective teams?

None of the Brewers minor league catchers are ready to produce as much as Estrada did this season.

Plus the Brewers will get next to nothing for Estrada.

Unless there's a free agent catcher out there this offseason (I don't know off the top of my head except Paul Lo Duca), then Estrada is the best option. Mike Rivera in due time should be starting, but Damian Miller is well past his prime and not capable of starting every game. But for next season unless there's a big free agent catcher I can't think of, then Estrada.

What if we offered Estrada in a trade package along with Ben Sheets? Could that get us a big time upgrade at catcher?

Would it be foolish (for either us or the Dodgers) to trade Sheets+Estrada for Russel Martin?

I got a way to defend it. Bring a bat to the game and kill one of them."

Yes it could but it would also give us a big time downgrade in pitching.

I would say it's foolish for both as the Dodgers need all the offense they can get and the Brewers need all the pitching they can get.

And Martin isn't enough of an upgrade to justify trading Sheets and getting nothing back in return.

Martin's career CERA- 3.81
Estrada's career CERA- 4.17

I would love to get a defensive guy with no stick to platoon with him and keep three catchers if necessary.

You can get a 250AB catcher with average to good defensive skills pretty easily. Even average would be a huge upgrade. Its true that its hard to get a fulltime guy with a decent stick who is an ace defensively, though.

We need defense up the middle now. We have our sticks at the corners, and we need Hardy/Weeks to tighten it up.

Estrada would be great as a 50 percent starter/pich hitting bat off the bench.

My Phillies fan friend said he's about 50 percent fatter than he was in his Phily days.
