From a team fit and analytics standpoint, trading a top three pick for Simmons is a no-brainer kind of move. Assuming the trade I brought up before, here is the roster.
Ricky Rubio, Juancho Hernangómez, Jarrett Culver, and top three pick.
D’Angelo Russell / Jordan McLaughlin
Malik Beasley / Jaylen Nowell
Anthony Edwards / Josh Okogie / Jake Layman
Ben Simmons / Jaden McDaniels
Karl-Anthony Towns / Naz Reid / Jarred Vanderbilt (RFA)
Keep in mind that Malik Beasley and Anthony Edwards are interchangeable with Jaylen Nowell, not going to list thirty meaningless line-ups. Similarly, where there is not overlap, Naz Reid can sub for Karl-Anthony Towns, and Jordan McLaughlin can sub for D'Angelo Russell.
Ben Simmons can play 1-4 easily and has the strength to play small bursts of small-ball five. He defends every position at an All-NBA level (1-4 top three level), is a top-tier finisher around the basket, has an elite handle, quality screener, and is a phenomenal passer. He is fully capable of being a high-impact player with low-usage, which is shown in the data.
Again, claiming that a top three pick and expirings is not worth this roster....
D’Angelo Russell / Jordan McLaughlin
Malik Beasley / Jaylen Nowell
Anthony Edwards / Josh Okogie / Jake Layman
Ben Simmons / Jaden McDaniels
Karl-Anthony Towns / Naz Reid / Jarred Vanderbilt (RFA)
...feels like losing the plot completely.
