My assumption is that Hammon will get the Spurs job when Pops retires. The one thing I guess people have brought up (maybe?) and I'm not the world's biggest patriot, is that she played for Russia in 2008 in hoops. Still find that very strange, whether she played pro in that country or not. I know she has dual-nationalties now.

And during that time, he developed Doncic, Finney-Smith, Brunson and Kleber into quality pros.
I get the "no retread" argument if we're talking about mediocre coaches like Van Gundy or Joerger, but Carlisle is one of the best.
You get no argument from me as it relates to Carlisle being one of the best coaches in the NBA. I'm just for creating more opportunities (and bringing more diversity) to the NBA coaching ranks.
We'll never know how good younger folks like Cassell, Hammon, Vanterpool, Unseld Jr., etc can be as head coaches if they never get an opportunity.
100% and we're not getting Carlisle anyhow. But everybody wants a name. "Let's get Jay Wright". Fantastic college coach. Brad Stevens was better at Butler. Good NBA coach. But underachieved this season. Personally, I don't want any college coach, even Pat Ewing, who has a long history as an NBA assistant and never got the shot to coach in the NBA as most former big men don't get chance to become head coach.
I trust that Tommy will do research, but if waits until just before August 2, he won't get Carlisle or Chauncey Billups or Atkinson. Maybe not Wes Jr., who is on the list of several other teams.
Brooks was a Ted selection because he wanted KD and he was a name coach. Didn't exactly work out though Ted did say we made the playoffs in 3 of 5 years, so I guess it was a slight success in his world.
Jay Wright has won 2 national championships so Wright has been better.

Carlisle is very good coach, but he has a rep for being a hard guy to play for. Isn't that what got him fired in Indiana? Are there any "disciplinarian" coaches left in 2021?
Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.

Wright won two championships at Villanova, who won a title in the 80s. Stevens took BUTLER to a National Title game twice. They were in the lowly Horizon League. Now they are in the Big East thanks to Stevens. It's apples and oranges. Both were great college coaches.

Did you know Brad Stevens inherited a team that made it the sweet 16 the prior season? Stevens was an assistant to that team but Butler was more relevant than Villanova at the time Wright inherited the job.
Jay Wright has also had the pleasure of losing to the eventual champion in the NCAA tournament multiple times IIRC

Report: Wizards interested in Billups for head coach opening

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Wizards are among multiple teams expressing interest in Clippers assistant coach Chauncey Billups. The Celtics, Pelicans and Trail Blazers are three teams looking at Billups, with Portland considering Billups a "prominent candidate."

Am I the only one that wants PIF as the head coach? He's clearly quite intelligent and I think he'd do a stellar job, and most importantly he probably wouldn't post here again. deux oiseaux...

I want the next coach to be the anti-Brooks. Ever seen a 4 centers and one guard lineup?
Can't say I do. Who else gonna shoot?

Who are the best D League coaches? Skill set needed to succeed there is more similar to NBA than college level. Lots of player development needed, dealing with professional players... I'd look hard at a young D League coach whose team outperformed their talent level. And who has graduated some good players.

Wright is a leader of men. Look at the fruit he consistently bears in terms of the type of player Villanova produces since he's been there. I have confidence that ability translates on all levels. Question is I doubt he'd leave his ideal situation for THIS job, I dont care how much him and Shepp are friends.
Carlisle is my #1 choice since he's now available.
I think Billups is a solid candidate as well.

What makes Billups a solid candidate?
I ask in all sincerity: why is he so attractive all of a sudden?
I see him on TV and he’s not impressive — not fluent, not particularly insightful. He speaks thickly. Sounds slow. And because of that, I think — wrongly or rightly — that he processes slowly.
Very good player, but is there anything about him that says — he’ll be relentless and ride herd and fanatically prepared and a master of X and O’s? That he has the stuff to be an all-time great?

It seems like Billups has the star power that Westbrook would listen to him. Also, the Clippers all around have been playing pretty well this postseason and sharing the ball. Perhaps Billups would stress the importance of sharing the spotlight as the Pistons did back in 2004.
But I do agree that I wasn't impressed by his TV career.

I totally agree.
I feel the same way about Sam Cassell. Sam seems more affable and nice but I think he also processes slowly.

I would put big money on either Sam Cassell or Wes Jr. Ted loves a good story and loves to look loyal or actually be loyal. It's probably both.

I don't think Cassell or Wes have any advantage. I do think Ted will think about how the coaching choice impacts his image as much as he does about how the coach will actually help us win games, but I don't think it will manifest itself in a reach for a "home town" type of pick. I think it will manifest itself in a diversity hire. The coach will be either black or female. (Note, that doesn't bother me at all since there are plenty of good options available. Hopefully, he'll find a coach who is both a diversity hire AND a good coach.)

I have a feeling it might be Kara Lawson.

Exactly. We need someone that is actually willing to stand his ground with Westbrook & Beal. In this case, what we don't need is a players coach that gets rolled over...

Lol yeah, the slow processing that gave them such trouble as the PGs of championship squads. It's the same sort of thing people said about Tyronn Lue until he proved himself yet again this post-season. Funnily enough, it's what gets said about most any black former player who works his way up into candidacy for a head coaching gig.
