Would you make a trade?
You're Pistons GM. Get lucky tomorrow with the #1 pick. It's got Cade written all over it. Then Orlando calls with the #3 and #8. WOuld you make that swap?
My initial reaction is "yes" since we need multiple players. But it is so hard for us to get a superstar, and Case's got the best chances to be one for the Pistons in a long, long time. Do you pull the trigger?

Trading down in value doesn't make sense.

No, not even if they throw in Isaac with #3 annd #8 and I am super high on JI (despite of his injuries). We need multiple players but we need a star more than anything else.

Re: Would you make a trade?
I’d say no- you keep the number one. Cade isn’t a Lebron level prospect but I do think he’s appreciably better than whoever you think the next guy is.
If you could get Green and another solid guy it might be tempting though. I’d just lean towards no.

Cade is Ben Simmons with a jumper. He’ll attract someone as valuable as #3 in free agency.

Re: Would you make a trade?
I just posted about this in another thread but the last time the one pick was traded was:
The sixers traded the #3 pick and a future lakers 1st pick if it "fell between 2 and 5 only" if the lakers pick didnt land that high it was going to be a UNPROTECTED kings 1st rounder".
So thats what the Sixers traded for a worse prospect then Cade. That draft also had a multiple good prospects in Tatum/Ball/Jackson/Fox in the top five. A 2-5 from the Lakers or a awful team in the Kings pick has more value then a 8 pick in this draft. So we would surely be selling less then what Cades worth.
The value of Cade would at the minimum be a top 3 pick + an unprotected 1st next year from a team like Orlando that is a lock to suck next year. An unprotected 1st gives you a shot at Chet next year. I'd also want a promising young player back to consider a deal.

Re: Would you make a trade?
Only way I trade out of #1 is for #2 and #5 (or better). No future unprotected stuff i can’t judge the value of. Maybe #2 and a young player i really like. I love Green, I think I’d rather have Green, but I wouldn’t be stupid about it. You want Cade? Pay me.

Re: Would you make a trade?
Yeah if we were to get lucky and get #1 and a teams like Orlando & OKC push Houston down is the only discussion.
It would take a massive overpay im not so sure teams would be willing to pay lol

Re: Would you make a trade?
Nah, because Green wouldn't be guaranteed at #3. I'd trade Cade for Green and #8 though I think. But another issue here is marketability and having the #1 Overall Pick to sell to the fanbase.
Weaver = Hinkie

Re: Would you make a trade?
Pistons landing #1 is a very rare opportunity to get an elite player. I wouldn't compromise that just to get another guy at #8. We've already got three second year guys slated for substantial minutes next season.
I think we sit tight anywhere in the top four, but my gut tells me don't be shocked if Weaver moves down from #5.
Would we trade 2,3, or 4 plus 2022 FRP unprotected for #1? Hmm...

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I'd make the trade if the Pistons can land 2, 3 and an unprotected FRP.
Green + Mobley + unprotected FRP is definitely worth making the trade.

Re: Would you make a trade?
With Weaver's ability to mine for talent later in the draft I don't see him giving up the #1 pick if he thinks he's a difference maker to build around. He's already assembled some of the young supporting cast.

Re: Would you make a trade?
We've seen what #8 picks look like... for years and years. Brandon Knight, Drummond, KCP, Hayes, Stanley Johnson, etc... You're far from guaranteed to even getting a good starter let alone an all-star there.
Cade might be the closest guy to Grant Hill this franchise is going to be able to get the next decade. It would take a massive overpay by someone with the assets of an OKC to move off of him. And I really like Green as a 20+ PPG scorer in year two in this league but I don't think you can make that trade.
It's much easier to trade down from #2 to #3 or #4 than it is to trade out of #1 in this draft. If the ball bounces our way and we get lucky with the #1 pick you need to starting getting the Cade merchandise ready to roll he's instantly the face of the franchise.

I will say if we wind up at 1 and Houston falls out of the top 4, I’m listening to the thunders offer.

Re: Would you make a trade?
If we get the first, we can’t trade it. This pick has to be a home run and picking first gives us the best chance of that.

Hell no. If we get #1, we draft Cade. It's that simple.

Re: Would you make a trade?
It all depends on how good you think Cade, Green, and Mobley are going to be.
If you believe Cade is the next generational talent, of course you don't trade the pick, that would be career suicide. If you believe that Green is going to be the better player you absolutely entertain offers for the #2 pick, another lottery pick, and a player.
This is a matter of perspective, and of course, high level scouting.

Re: Would you make a trade?
I sure would like to be a fly on the wall when Weaver explains his thinking after the lottery to Gores and Stefanski. Even though he may not make many major moves, I do expect a surprise or two based on his evaluation of the talent at the top of the draft.
