Cubs Cry Foul

Cubs not thrilled with Astros pitchers

September 19, 2007
By Jeff Vorva the daily southtown
CHICAGO -- The Cubs aren't very happy about Milwaukee getting to face three rookie starting pitchers in its series against Houston.

They aren't making a huge deal about it, however.

The Cubs and Brewers are engaged in a heated battle for first place in the National League Central. Houston had rookie Matt Albers start against Milwaukee on Monday and rookie Felipe Paulino on Tuesday (instead of veteran Woody Williams), and Juan Gutierrez is slated to start tonight (replacing Roy Oswalt, whose wife is expecting a baby).

"That ticks us off," Cubs outfielder Cliff Floyd said. "But you can't help a family situation. I had one this year (the death of his father, Cornelius in August). Oswalt's having a kid. God bless him.

"I don't understand the Woody Williams deal. But I'm not going to question (Astros manager) Cecil Cooper's decision. It's their team. They can do what the heck they want to do. At the same time, we would like everybody to play their (best) guys."

What a bunch of garbage.

1. Albers has made 16 starts and has been in their rotation for awhile.
2. Why would you not want to see the talent you have when you are out of the playoff race. Makes sense to keep throwing a crappy Woody Williams out there I guess.
3. Roy Oswalt and his wife are having a baby. What are you going to do?

If the Cubs can't beat crappy teams with their $400 million dollar payroll then they don't deserve to win anyway. Get over it.

I doubt HR happy Woody Williams would have beaten the Brewers with the 1 run of support he would have gotten last night.

Maybe Jones thought Williams would hit 3 homers in the 9 hole last night? :dontknow:

As I posted on their board, anything that gets their players minds off their own game is a good thing. Let them get distracted. And it sure sounds as if they are already coming up with an excuse for choking away the division.

You would think a $30+ million payroll advantage would be enough for them. And it's a good excuse of our own if we don't win the division.

lol and its not like it would have matterd.. well maybe but whatever our pitching has be killer the last two days.

this has nothing to do with nothing. oswalt missed a start and they wanted to check out a guy. williams was sent to the pen. the other guy has been in the roation for a long time.

lets see how good cubs do agianist their rookie pitcher tonight agianist the reds. hope he goes for a perfect game.

Choking away? 24-10. 24-10.

Anyways this complaint is made by every playoff team in the end of the season of every sport. The only reason the Brewers aren't complaining about something idiotic is because the media doesn't talk to them.

24-10? oh you mean when we peaked in may and then our pitching died but we came back to tie the cubs after the cubs had the chance to pull away. ooo that 24-10.

The Cubs never had a chance to pull away, probably still don't. The Brewers were in control of the division until they choked it away.

The Cubs largest lead was 2.5 games. If we lose it's not for choking it away, it's just being the more mediocre of two largely unimpressive teams.

brewers lost like 6 in a row but cubs lost six in a row or something like at the time when they were up 2.5 games

Your manager makes more than our entire infield makes (which includes this years MVP, ROY and another all-star). We are overachieving just by being in the race this late in the season. There is no way a team with so much high priced talent can lose out to a small market cheap team, right?

I think you're mistaken, I had heard the Brewers are the best team in baseball.

There are three teams below the Brewers in payroll who are going to make the playoffs, and there are three teams above the Cubs who won't. But sure, woe is you.

The key to success for the Cubs was spending $300 million in the offseason. Who knew that's all it would take? Yeesh, now that's some incompetent management.

You guys could've signed Lilly instead of Suppan.

You could've signed Marquis.

You could've signed DeRosa (any team could've).

The only things out of any average teams reach were Soriano and Lou...and they're certainly not worth that many wins on their own.

Every team has their advantages and disadvantages. We certainly don't have a farm system that pumps out prospects like Gallardo and Braun. But it's funny how only now all this complaining about payrolls comes up. It reminds me of when I was a kid and I would whine about how other kids had better hockey equipment and blame it for me not making the AAA team. No, I just sucked.

let's be fair. the brewers ARE the only team in the history of sports to play slightly inferior competition toward the end of a season. the cubs have never once in their 131-year incarnation as a baseball team played a substandard opponent. plus, everyone knows that games at the end of the year count more than games at the beginning.

this will definitely give that youtube 'cheaters!' cubfreak some ammo.

Yeah if they would actually come here. And I doubt they'd be any better than Suppan has been.

I'd rather have Weeks.

The only things out of any average teams reach were Soriano and Lou...and they're certainly not worth that many wins on their own.

And Soriano was a huge reach. Seriously does he even have 60 RBI's this year?

But it's funny how only now all this complaining about payrolls comes up.

Yes just now. You seem to pay a lot of attention. If you're saying the Cubs don't have an advantage when it comes to spending money and getting better players using something other than the farm system then you're being ridiculous.

Wait...what are you complaining about then? Apparently Suppan is as good as our FA pitchers, Weeks is better than DeRosa and Soriano sucks.

Of course the Cubs have an advantage in the FA market, teams that make more money usually spend more. I'm saying no Brewer fans were complaining about the salary inequalities earlier in the year. Only now, as we lead with two weeks to go. Anyways, several teams have it worse than the Brewers, several teams have it better than the Cubs, so it's really tough to have a lot of sympathy for your plight.

you lead but you dont lead. we are tied in the loss column. if we play as good as you we will be tied.

Return to Milwaukee Brewers
