I like Herro, I think he has huge balls. And his game is smooth.
With that said :
1) He's one of the worst defenders I've ever seen in the NBA. After 2 years, he's an extremally bad defender despite having good coaching.
2) He can't get to the line. There's no way to be a great scorer if you don't get to the line. The efficiency goes up, you put pressure on the defense, shooting FT's at high rate is a MUST for every good scorer. It's a extremally important skill for a lead guard, and for whatever reason he doesn't have it.
Basically he's a very bad defender with almost no shot at becoming a really great scorer, his focus in now in question, and physically he'll always be limited.
I'd take Sexton over him, I hate to admit it won't be an hard decision either.
I'm on board with trading Herro for Sexton, however I'm not as down on Herro as others seem to be. Few things:
- Herro is by no means a good defender, particularly not individually, but we still managed a 112.9 DRTG with him on the floor (despite often times playing him with DRob or Gogi/Nunn/Gabe in our disastee 3 guard lineups). Well below our 111.2 DRTG for the season but not too far off the league median of 112.5, and better than our 113.4 with Nunn on the floor
- His .167 FT rate definitely needs work, but I'm not sure our offensive system was ideal for onball creators not not named Butler, Bam or Dragic. Olynyk had a .106 FT rate in Miami last season, well below his career rate of over .250 and the .328 in 2019, then promptly elevated that to .421 in Houston where he was allowed to create offense with the ball in his hands
Again, I would do Herro for Sexton, but a big reason for that is fit if the assumption is that we retain DRob. Using Herro as 6th man is kinda wasting his potential going into year 3, but we don't have a traditional PG so we need a better ballhandler than Herro in the starting lineup if DRob is there. Sexton isn't a pure PG but he can handle primary or secondary ballhandling duties with Butler
