It's amazing how much the hitting profile of a guy like that changes if he's striking out 24% of the time and only walking 5% of the time with a reasonably high BABIP. The margin for success is minimal.

It is for a great many prospect profiles, really. Take Biggio. A lot of people, myself included, were pretty uninspired with the fact that we took him, even with a 5th round pick (which is hardly a premium spot in the draft). He was a below-average defender who walked plenty, didn't strike out much, and had absolutely no power in his junior year at Notre Dame. And in his first year as a pro, he hit exactly zero HRs in 280 PAs. Two years later he was a dinger-crushing strikeout machine. The margins are fine, and players don't always evolve in the manner you expect, for good or bad. Lopez with a 24% strikeout/5% walk rate is basically a non-prospect...unless he suddenly turns his gap power into 25 HR power, which is unlikely but not at all impossible, because prospects are weird.

The best way to be wrong about prospects is to have literally any opinion, ever.

Also, Groshans has 2 HR on the night in his bid to convince people that he isn't the fifth-best offensive talent in NH.

If Vlad is to have any chance at the triple crown, they'd better stop playing McGuire so often.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Someone told Otto he needs to show some power to be considered a legit prospect.

The internal competition between Jordan Groshans and Austin Martin for the left side of the infield primacy is heating up. Groshans is really hitting his stride. Both have some similarities in their offensive profiles, Martin may have a bit more contact, Groshans a bit more power, but the differences are slight. Won't keep either from getting to the majors. Unfortunately, Martin is on the IL right now - he was beaned bank on the helmet in a game on Thursday and is being handled carefully.

Well they’re rotating Martin between SS and CF. I’m surprised they haven’t been playing him at either third or second, tbh. I don’t know what they see him as long term as of now.

They have been playing a whole lot of players in multiple positions at NH, but with Springer in the first year of his contract, the next bet for Martin is the infield. I'm a bit surprised they haven't tried him at 2B and 3B, as those offer the biggest opportunity to start in the majors as of next season. But it's still early days.

I suspect he'll be a CF but they see more value in a player who could be a CF or an infielder depending on what the team needs when he comes up. No reason not to keep playing him at both spots for now much like how Vlad kept playing 3B and now seems to be solid defensively at 1B.

Why is Moreno not playing on back-to-back days?

Except today, where Kevin Smith plays LF and goes 2 for 4 with another HR. I guess we want to see the full range of available options, but LF seems pretty well-covered.

Groshans is starting to hit, as well. May was bad for him, particularly the lack of power, but he's now at .277/.333/.494 in June, with a much-improved K rate.

Just watched a clip of that interview. Montoyo actually said "We’re going to have some decisions on our hands ... and Moreno's going to have a cast on his hands." Then his bow tie started spinning and a stream of water squirted out of his boutonniere.
