Re: Shams: Blazers hire Billups for HC
I would now find it hard to believe Portland will now agree to trade Dame if Billips agreed to a five
year deal to be HC. Curious the timing for they must think the Clippers will be out of the playoffs by
tomorrow night, leaving them free to schedule a press conference for Tuesday afternoon. Hopefully
Billips will be open and honest about these allegations that happened when in 1997 so that there will
be no cloud on his tenure in Portland.
It will be interesting to see who will be coming to Portland to fill out his staff for they will likely need
an X's and O's man given his coaching experience.

Re: Shams: Blazers hire Billups for HC
I really like the hire. Chauncey was always the kind of player you hated to play against. He made the most of his ability, was fundamentally sound, but played a style of game that was both physical and cerebral, and he played hard on both ends of the floor. Always fundamentally sound, but also did whatever it took to take the other team out of their game. He can get this team playing with a chip on their shoulder.
He never had superstar talent, but he was the type of player that made the most of his talent. I can see him helping the Blazers make the most of their talent, especially on the defensive end. If he can help Simons and Little maximize their abilities and help them develop a little bit of a nasty disposition on the court, this team could go places.

I dont think it happens, but I would say there is a non-zero chance that CB doesnt coach a game for Portland. I think this could get messy.
Hiring a coach with any sort of 'history' in a city like Portland was such a stupid decision.
I think Dame could simply respond a single time with 'your pushing a minority out of a job' and all the wokesters would go silent.

I think the Billups thing is a huge gray area that I'm not comfortable commenting on, but to act like there is something wrong with folks who have a problem with someone who may have raped someone is disgusting and to boil it down to thinking you could solve it by mentioning he is a minority is even worse.
I don't envy the moderators but this community here has definitely shown its ugly side, not sure this is for me anymore. Which sucks, I really wanted to see the day D-Train turned on Olshey

Blazers brass are basically just hoping the backlash online is a quick 1-2 week storyline, then by the draft, most everyone will have moved on. We'll see if that bet pays off...

I am not saying the backlash is wrong. I actually would never have hired him. The juice isnt worth the squeeze.
But I do think Dame could shut up many by mentioning that, which I also think is gross.

In less than two weeks this will be a non-issue, people move on to the next outrage and forget. That's just how things go in our current day, what is happening right now is always super important and worth going crazy over to score hits and followers, who can be the loudest and most influential but with no real substance behind their cries. Moda center going to sell out like usual, tv sponsorships won't notice, people just don't care deeply about very much these days just surface level.

My thoughts exactly. That said, the type of discourse that you accurately laid out for how all this works is so tiring. It’s really sucked all the joy of the league or even talking about/reading about the NBA. It’s just exhausting to have to move from one outrage to another. Last week and a little this week will be the Billups stuff, then this week and into next it’s about Pippin saying Jackson was/is racist, then there will be another one after that.
It’s not to diminish the importance of any of those topics, but I loved basketball and talking trades for the escapism of everyday life, something fairly lighthearted and exciting. That’s becoming harder and harder to do since everything has to be looked through a social justice prism at all times no days. It’s not a good balance. It’s wrong to ignore the problems and sweet injustice under the rug, but it’s just as wrong to make it the main focal point of every second of every day. There needs to be a better balance of those two opposites.

Re: Shams: Blazers hire Billups for HC
We would all be cancelled if we were judged by our worst moment. I have no doubt that Chauncey has made mistakes, and I'm not going to try to figure out what happened 24 years ago, when he was 20 years old. I would judge him by what he's done recently. Is he the type of person who would do something to embarrass the franchise? No. I do not believe so. If I thought for one second that he was a loose cannon who is likely to do something that would make all of us sorry that he is the the head coach of the Blazers, I would be upset. But I don't. He is our coach and I am happy to have him, as I believe he will do good things as the Blazers coach.

I’m sorry but who says stuff like this? Take my word for it but don’t take hers? I’m never gonna be sure one way or the other because I wasn’t there, but to sound so sure of yourself and your hypocrisy is mind boggling. Survivors don’t wanna hear stuff like that. Not a single shred of contrition or empathy, typical Neo.

was I the only one who noticed that Olshey said Portland did an investigation AFTER offering Billups the job?
does that seem a little backwards?

Who conducted the investigation/ While the findings may be proprietary and thus not to b public, the credibility of the investigators seem relevant if one is to accept their conclusion without evidence.

The Blazers have zero interest in feeding more information into further stories. Not the name of the investigation firm for who else they’ve investigated (whether guilt by association or reputable and that won’t convince many who are against the hire). Not who was interviewed (people whose privacy would be lost). Not to give breadcrumbs for reporters to follow long after the accusations and settlement become unknowable, so the story becomes about something else? Olshey? What Portland wants? I honestly don’t know.
Epicurus makes a valid argument. Absolutely. The negatives of the Blazers not saying who they used, at least short term, exist. The quicker the story fades is The Goal. Don’t feed the story or future stories. I can agree with Epicurus, but the strategy used is for a no-win scenario.

Re: Shams: Blazers hire Billups for HC
I agree that it appears Olshey figures that this thing will just go away, as next weeks news cycle rolls in... No big deal... Nothing to see here... Trust me, we looked into this already.
But will it just go away? Times have changed significantly when it comes to this sort of thing. Having had worked in a Hotel that hosts NBA players somewhat close to that time period of NWA and Too Short, and having read the reports about the incident, I think I too might believe the victim. I also have seen this cancel culture thing absolutely ruin people for far far less ugly behavior. Point is, I'll be surprised if this does "Just go away".
Feels like a main structural piece of this franchise may now have a small crack in it, and I think it's possible further damage may be on the horizon... Kinda like ZC's foot.

Re: Shams: Blazers hire Billups for HC
I think the rape allegations simply were allegations and it’s unfair to drop the hammer on chauncey even though canzano and national media seems to have done just that. Now of course research should’ve been done before the hire and maybe that part was indeed lacking but as far as overall picture i don’t think there’s enough here to say billups is a rapist/bad person. Anybody can be accused of anything and often people settle things just to not have to deal with the time and money involved with lawsuits. But chauncey seems by and large not guilty here

Re: Shams: Blazers hire Billups for HC
It's just a shame that Olshey was part of this press conference. He's always got this attitude that if anyone disagrees with him or asks a question he doesn't like he's all I'm the GM and only my opinion matters. That's annoying when its basketball stuff. Like when someone asked him when we're gonna get a backup point guard and he responded Anfernee Simons IS our backup point guard. When its about rape allegations, it's absolutely unacceptable.
