Best, most versatile defenders in the draft IMO:

1) Herb Jones
2) Usman Garuba
3) Scottie Barnes
4) Franz Wagner
5) Trey Murphy
6) JT Thor
7) Kessler Edwards
8) Kai Jones/Jalen Johnson

9) Greg Brown/Ziaire Williams/Jeremiah Robinson-Earl

Bench - PP , Romeo, Weiskamp, JT Thor, Moses.

Switchable wings who can all shoot.

Use Yam Madar when a pg is necessary.

And I am 100% serious..

Why do people think Williams is worth anything more than a late 1st? He’s a 6’9” center that is never healthy. Maybe a team with multiple 1st would give us a pick in the 20s. Lottery? And Smart for a lottery pick? smh. People way over value our players

"Never healthy" is way overstated. Rob had Covid and turf toe, which are anomalies, with the latter likely coming from his playing hurt. But still he was 7th on the team in total games played--just 2 behind Jaylen who was 5th. There's no way I trade low on him (though Brad might). Worst case they let him play out the year and then can pay market value on his next deal if they want after they finagle to bring in a max FA if they can.

I just did an in depth breakdown/analysis comparing Moses Wright to Kai Jones.

Based on the criteria, Wright actually barely edges out Jones as a better draft prospect. It was really close, but Wright won.

We were all drooling over the possibility of getting Kai with the 16th pick, but we could get a guy who's actually better than him with the 45th pick.

Wright is projected to go somewhere in the 45-60 range. He might go before our pick but it seems highly likely he'll still be available at 45.

Of course, all of us thinking Kai Jones would be a good fit for the Celtics was before we traded for 2 centers so not sure we still want him?

Kai Jones and Moses Wright can both play the 4 or the 5.

Moses Wright did play mostly center this year for his college team but he can also play the 4.

I can see Wright developing into a guy like Siakam. Some of Wright's drives to the rim he looks a lot like Siakam.

Wright has slimmed down, dropped 10 lbs since the college basketball season so he really looks spry and agile out there during the combine, especially on the play at 58:11 where he runs the floor, beats his man down the court and throws down a dunk, he's number 39:

And here at the combine he shows quickness, agility and the ability to hit shots off the catch or off the dribble:

Haven't studied Moses Wright as much so I won't comment on the comparison. But I always want to add real talent via the draft.

*on a similar note, I keep wondering why Krispert keeps getting lottery consideration while Wieskamp is slated a 2nd rd talent. It seems to me that Wieskampo may be better at every part of the game. Main difference was the high level of exposure Krispert played with at Gonzaga.

Excited that he's on the list of guys who worked out for us. Get him, Brad.

Some of his moves in the video, and his size/frame he looks an awful lot like Jayson Tatum, especially on the step-back jumpers.

Also looks like Ziaire Williams except Champagnie has a stronger frame and is a better shooter.

The other comparison I'm seeing for Champagnie is James Bouknight - lots of similarities with the way these two guys play and the numbers they put up this past season (both were sophomores). But Champagnie is 3 inches taller, 2 inches longer on the wingspan and a higher % shooter from 3 and from the FT line, higher rebounding % too. Champagnie appears to be just as athletic and just as good of a handle - and Champagnie also looks like maybe a slightly better defender too. Yet Bouknight is projected to go in the 7-12 range, Ziaire is projected in the 15-25 range and Champagnie is projected late 2nd round or undrafted. As my man Big L once said, "I don't understand it".

Of course, the last player where I watched their highlight vid and thought they would be the steal of the draft was Watford and then I watched his scouting report vid and see that he is terrible defensively and then saw a video from the combine where he gets scored on easily a bunch of times and also appears to be winded easily/out of shape.

I dont like his form on those 3s at all. Brings the ball way down and seems to have such a long motion to cock back and get the 3 off. Seems like a guy that will get blocked a ton on the perimeter. Pretty shifty and some nice moves to the hoop though.

Agreed about Wieskamp. I have him ranked 1 spot ahead of Kispert. I don't see anything Kispert does better. Wieskamp is a year younger and more athletic, longer wingspan.

I think it's just that like you said, Kispert got more exposure playing on a team that was undefeated all the way up until the national title game. Also, Wieskamp was overshadowed playing with Garza who won National Player of the Year.

This is a reason I am moving Matthew Hurt up my wish list. Shoots over his head. Very repeatable, quick release, and should be hard to block.

I really think he is going to be able to play minutes from day one.

Matthew Hurt looks very good on the offensive end, but has a lot of work to do to on the defensive side. At pick #45, one can't expect the complete package, but I really like his stroke. He's got a nice frame, but would benefit from adding some muscle.

Agreed. I think he is being underrated for that reason.

He's a 5 star recruit which I know is a relatively meaningless designation but he can definitely play and is a highly skilled shooter.

I just think shooting is too important these days to pass him up.

IDK about Hurt. He could be a good pick - he's a 4 who can really shoot it. Good size and only a sophomore so will keep getting better.

But seems like a big goofy guy who's slow, unathletic and can't defend. Like Kornet except Hurt is a better shooter but way shorter and not as good a defender. At the combine Jay Bilas commented how he thought Hurt looked out of shape - he had the 2nd highest body fat % at the combine.

Slow, unathletic white guys don't do so good in today's NBA. How many good ones are there? Jokic, who else? There's not many. Jokic can shoot it like a guard, handle the ball like a guard pass it like a guard but has this big wide body so he's able to overpower people down low combined with all of these crafty moves he has with the dribble to get into the paint and an array up up-fakes, up and unders to score inside. Out of those 5 attributes Jokic has (shooting, passing, ball handling, crafty drive moves to get into paint, crafty moves in the paint to score) the only 1 Hurt has is shooting. Maybe Hurt can be like Baynes? But at least Baynes can defend and he's also very strong which Hurt is not. Still, Toronto is desperately trying to find a new center to replace Baynes. More often slow unathletic white guys are ones who are good in college but not so good in the NBA (Brian Scalabrine, Mark Madsen, Tyler Hansbrough, Adam Morrison, Gerry McNamara, etc.)

Moses Wright is a good shooter (41% from 3) on much lower volume though than Hurt..so Hurt is a better shooter but Wright appears to be better at literally everything else (rim protection, passing, rebounding, athleticism, defense) and is in better shape..Wright could be just as good (if not better) than Kai Jones, who is a likely lottery pick but Wright will likely still be there at 45..

From mocks I've seen, there's a good chance Hurt will go undrafted. So we could always try scooping him up as undrafted free agent and see if he can earn a roster spot at summer league/training camp. I think we can aim higher than him though with the 45th pick..

After watching some Moses Wright... think he's a great fit and way more valuable than Hurt. Wright is basically Robert Williams minus the passing but with 3 point range. Great roll man finishing around the hoop, great rim protection, and appears to be able to hit open threes at a better clip than Semi, etc. Sort of Robert Williams/Ibaka hybrid. Could be super helpful as a 4 man. His 3 point shooting is low volume, but especially if we resign Fournier, he and Nesmith are hopefully the volume +3 point shooters that give the Jay's more space to operate. Wright could be great to give defense and rebounding and hit the occasional open 3.

Agreed. Yes, Wright is similar to Robert Williams but with the ability to play the 4 since he's really quick on his feet, really nimble, just overall quick enough to play the 4. looks quicker/more agile during combine scrimmages compared to this past season at Georgia Tech, I believe he dropped 10 pounds so that is helping him be more mobile. And like you said he can shoot it too.

I think he's lower in mock drafts because
a) Senior bias. Many people just see a lower ceiling on 22 year old seniors
b) I think people probably looked at him and think he plays more like a center but at 6'9" he's too small to play center

However, Wright is not a typical 22 year old senior player. He didn't even start playing basketball until freshman year of high school. He played 2 seasons of JV ball then junior year played for a home school team. He only played 1 year of varsity basketball and that was his senior year. So although he's a 22 year old senior he's still early in his development so it's basically like drafting a 19/20 yr old who is still raw and has lots of untapped potential

And as far as being too small to play center, I think that's why he dropped 10 pounds, and at the combine you see him looking more spry, more light on his feet and in the drills you see him showing improved ball handling and shot making skills. He wants to show people he can play the 4.

2 other things I like about Wright:

1) Stamina. The dude is always on the court. You don't have to worry about him getting hurt or not being able to handle a high amount of mins. He played in 26 of Georgia Tech's 27 games this year and averaged over 35 mins a game. That's a really high amount of mins over the course of an entire season in college where they play 40 minute games. The year before that as a junior he played in all 31 of his team's games and averaged over 30 mins a game.

2) He's a good defender and his defense is even more impressive when you see that he has a very low foul rate. He averaged just 3.1 fouls per 40 mins as a senior - down from 4.0 fouls per 40 mins as a junior
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

I gotta think that after we pic at #45, that we'll pick up 1 or 2 Undrafted, through Training Camp.

More often slow unathletic white guys are ones who are good in college but not so good in the NBA (Scalabrine, Madsen, Hansbrough, Morrison, Gerry McNamara, etc.)

So we could always try scoping him up as undrafted free agent and see if he can earn a roster spot at summer league/training camp. I think we can aim higher though with the 45th pick..

I think Moses Wright is certainly the more complete player.

However, I think we are underrating Hurt's shooting ability. He is going IMO be a closer to a Duncan Robinson, Davis Bertans

This thread isn't about Rob but he has been mentioned a few times... why have we never let Rob shoot? CBS usually lets everybody and their mother shoot, but he never let TT or Rob shoot. While TT isn't all that, he had done good enough to at least ATTEMPT to stretch the floor. Rob may not be good, but we never even allowed him to test it in-game. How do we know he can't do it? He has really good touch IMO, but he doesn't get many shots to get a feel for it. The last two seasons CBS hasn't had multiple shooters at the big position (grant barely counts), but he also didn't let them shoot. TT could have given us 33-35% which is just good enough to keep people honest. Thing the Jays could have used last season.

Really last season was the only season CBS seemed to hold players back. He use to play with lineups all the time and that was when we were fully healthy, last season he toyed with the young guys PT and he didn't let his bigs shoot.

IDK, this is about the draft, I hope that IF we are keeping so many of these kids again we at least let them play instead of wasting spots and opportunities vets could take. Let the kids play and let the bigs shoot. Good luck Ime!

I think we don't know as you said... but the coaches know what he can and can't do from practice with the team and one on one workouts. I have to think if he showed the ability to stroke it from deep Steven's would give him the green light to shoot.

I do think he has a pretty good stroke though and could benefit from adding some foul line range jumpers into his regular arsenal. He shoots them every once in a while and looks pretty good doing so. His injury concerns are well documented but theres still so much upside there. His passing, athleticism, and timing... all things that can't really be taught... are great, his court awareness and shooting still have a lot of room to grow, but should with reps.

Rob is so good at vertical spacing I would hate to see Rob floating on the 3 point line. His mid-range and offensive rebounds are what we need. That and staying healthy.

I'm strongly considering Garza at 45 just for his shooting at 45 size and shooting isn't much upside but he could dougie mcbuckets lite.
