He's a free agent but, unless Philly finds a team who is taking Simmons into their cap space (won't happen) they don't really have many other options for both trading Simmons and signing Lowry. The only other way would be to send~20-25mill in contacts to Toronto in exchange, and why does Toronto do that?
OKC can easily absorb Simmons for the price of a FRP, they do have options if they are just looking to unload him.
Lowry could also just opt to sign for the MLE. I know Lowry has aspirations of getting 20m, but do you realistically see any team out there that is willing to give a 35yo PG that much money even with his production? He gives up money to go home and play on a championship contender with an MVP candidate.
OKC doesn't seem like a team that would want to pay a FRP to absorb Simmons. I could be wrong though.
But Lowry accepting a taxpayer MLE (ie approx 6 million/year) to play for Philly is absolutely not going to happen. He's not giving up $15million/year for a chance at a second ring.
OKC is talent starved and have million FRPs, I think they do that deal in a heartbeat. They've got to pay someone to hit the salary floor
I'd agree the MLE is super low but if there's one destination that fills all other boxes its Philly. Outside of them there aren't many teams that need PG to get over the hump and would be willing to satisfy his salary demands. Dallas and Miami are the only other two teams that he fits but its still paying a 35yo Lowry to pair with a 25yo Doncic or 32yo Butler/24yo Bam who still have to pay Duncan.
