Yikes!!

This is almost identical to what Schlenk said regarding Taurean Prince 2 years ago before trading him.

Then give a good contract, with team performance bonus based on each playoffs round they win, and give it to evey other guys later (except Trae that will get the Max)

Did Collins step back for the good of the team....or were there just better options that relegated him to his rightful place

Wouldn't being a good team player make him more likely to get a max from another team in RFA? I bet other teams are more impressed too and will try harder to poach him. imo this doesn't save the hawks any money on his next contract.

Hawks' offer should not be near max, it should be in the same area of Myles Turner's contract and Domantas Sabonis' contract, which is about $19 million - $20 million per year, maybe 4 years, at $77 million

Won’t happen. Sabonis’ got 4/77 after averaging 14/9 & 12/8 the year before.…same with Turner who was at 13/6 with just meh advanced metrics before his extension. Ppl would of been upset on here if we gave them close to 20m at the time..but obviously Sabonis’ broke out into an all star after he was paid…Turner a great defender.

But Sabonis averaged 14/9 while playing only 22 or 23min per game because his IND team at this moment was like the ATL team of this season, not the ATL of last season. John got 32min last season and 2nd offensive option in a half empty team.
Sabonis didn't improve a lot between before and after his contract, he was already playing at his current level, but just with less playing time.
If John had only played 22min last season, he would have got the same kind of stats than Sabonis before his contract.

On this season, a lot of players stats are also higher than what they should be because they got lots of injuries. It's like BKN that could have Harden, Durant and Irving at 35pts/game with a lot of injuries, but certainly between 25 and 30 if they have no injuries and must all shares the ball for 82games

I know but Sabonis wasn’t starting at that time because his team was like this ATL team (which never sniffed the ECF) but because people were questioning his fit (and still do) with Turner because they’re both C’s. Thad Young was starting over him who he was clearly better than. And of course no one playing 22-23 mins is getting the max or close.

Collins usage last year: 22.7
Collins usage this year 22.2

Not much difference. His role changed not his usage. (And 22% tile is good for 120th-130th range in the nba in terms of usage so it isn’t a normal 2nd option on most teams)

Ranking the Top 15 Bigs in 2021 NBA Free Agency

1. John Collins (Restricted)

Image

...no [free agent big man] checks quite as many boxes as John Collins.

In fact, of all the attributes analyzed for players 15 through 2, playmaking may be the only one Collins hasn't already proved himself to have. And since he turns 24 in September, it's safe to say there's still time to improve in that area.

Other than that, Collins really can sort of shapeshift from one big-man archetype to another.

He's an explosive leaper who can catch lobs out of pick-and-rolls or score on putbacks. He's hit 40.0 percent on 3.4 three-point attempts per game over the last two seasons. And he's averaged at least one block in three of his four NBA campaigns.

When you put it all together, he has a statistical profile that puts him in pretty elite company. Joel Embiid and Karl-Anthony Towns are the only other players in league history to average at least 20 points, 10 rebounds, one block and one three per 75 possessions through their age-23 seasons.

Of course, adding the threes qualifier pretty much eliminates any big man who played prior to this era, but maybe that actually helps to better illustrate the point.

In today's game, bigs are generally asked to bring a wider array of skills to the floor, and Collins does just that.

John Hollinger’s 2021 NBA free-agency power forward: What’s left after John Collins?

Image

If you’re in the market for an elite power forward, the good news is that you only have one phone call to make. The bad news is the pickings get slim pretty quickly after that, with Atlanta’s John Collins as the only power forward guaranteed to eclipse a $10 million annual salary.

Tier 1: Max players

1. John Collins, Hawks (restricted): $26,142,092 (third overall)

A max contract for John Collins would start at $28 million a year; right now, [my calculations] suggests he’s almost but not quite worth it. Of course, rival teams trying to grenade Collins out of Atlanta are unlikely to parse such distinctions, which is why overpays on offer sheets can happen in restricted free agency.

Fortunately, Atlanta is in a pretty good position when one sizes up the market. The teams with max cap room either don’t really need a power forward (New York) or aren’t trying to win this year (Oklahoma City) — with one possible exception: San Antonio. The Spurs are rebuilding around their young guards and will have max cap room, but will only have one big (lumbering center Jakob Poeltl) in the pipeline and are losing Rudy Gay, Trey Lyles, Gorgui Dieng and DeMar DeRozan to free agency.

Barring a toxic offer sheet from the Spurs, this may come down to a staring contest between Collins and the Hawks. In the end, it’s strongly in the interests of both parties to get a long-term deal done. A max deal for Collins would be four years, $125 million, and I don’t see that one happening sans an outside offer sheet. However, something in the neighborhood of $100-110 million strikes me as a likely endpoint.

Tier 2: More than midlevel but less than max

Minny has been trying to included Culver in their pursuit of Collins in the past. Now, they will be lucky to get a second round pick for him.

Darren Wolfson: I hear the Wolves are open to moving Jarrett Culver for a second-round pick. Hard to see anyone biting coming off the ankle surgery.
