So Why DID Yost Do This?

Post#1 » by MickeyDavis » Thu Sep 20, 2007 1:27 pm

This was discussed in the game thread but I still can't figure out why Bush would bat Bush in the top of the 7th and THEN DOESN'T PITCH HIM IN THE BOTTOM OF THE SEVENTH??? Why in the hell do you bat the pitcher if you are going to take him out.

Yes Bush did get a hit. But even then why not use a pinch runner if you are going to take Bush out anyway? We have plenty of speed guys on the bench, any of them WOULD HAVE SCORED on the following double.

I can't believe that Yost planned to pitch Bush in the bottom of the seventh and then changed his mind at the last minute.

And taking Braun out in a close game is insane.

This puzzles me as well. And thats why I feel he will never be able to lead us in a close race. Its just makes no sense to the average fan. Why leave Wise in as long as he did? Its was like he conceded the game at that point. And that has happened before. Ryan needs to stay in the game no matter what. How does that affect his confidence and his performance? Ryan could have made the throw that Counsell made that pulled Prince off the bag. It was not the defense that killed us late in games. It was pitching. Sometimes he plays the %s and than again he ignores them completely. Like when Turnbow pitches on the 2nd day his ERA is over 7. But if later during the game if Jenkins is facing a lefty Yost does not want to change the flow of the game.
Go figure. :banghead:

they talked about it on the radio, bush had just done basically a couple wind sprints after getting on, and after sitting on base so long ned just decided to take him out

That move and the Greg Aquino in Houston move are 1 and 2 in his worst decisions of the year. It's just common sense. Didn't we call up Mel Stocker to PINCH RUN??!! What bout TGJ, use his ONLY TALENT. That is running. Good god Yost, just quit now.

Yeah that sequence of management last night was downright mindboggling. THe Bush thing I can kind of understand but not really. Matt wise staying in I am befuddled.

But taking Ryan Braun out in the 7th inning in a 1 run game is just plain stupidity. I don't mind when Yost does it in the 9th when it's closing time for COCO, that is fine with me. But to do it in the 7th I just can not fathom what goes thru this guys head.

I am confused

if i remember correctly braun even made a couple good plays at third last night as well. one thing that bothered me was that he didn't pinch-hit jenks for dillon in the 7th, but then bringing him in defensively in the next inning. i just don't get when ned decides to hit righty-lefty and when he doesn't

You know, there's reasons for the things we do. We looked at the numbers and Bushy's hitting .500 there this year. That's even better than Dilly. And Dilly was already in the game anyway.

The thing I can't stand is when they get some great improbable win like losing their ace in the 2nd and getting the win with great outings from some inconsistent relievers... and then blow it the next night to give it right back. Or a few weeks ago, when Corey stole that game-winner against the Phillies and Prince hit his own, and then Carlos, Wise and Coco got crushed again the next afternoon.

But I don't think anyone in baseball could look good this year with that pitching staff.

I have to agree with this second-guess, though. If Bush is doing wind sprints out there, make up your mind and get a pinch runner on the base.

Yost's foresight doesn't extend beyond his nose.
