WOW ! I definitely think Pelicans won this trade turning Adams into Valanciunas. Free up cap space and they didn’t like the fit of Adams, but Valancunias is a much better scorer next to their stud Zion and Ingram. Yeah they lose Bledsoe, but getting cap flexibility to resign Ball and possibly get Lowry.

What an instant upgrade to this team. Also makes more room for their young shooting guard who played well Nickeil A-Walker. Still have Hart, Marshall, and Kira Lewis Jr.

Scratching my head at what Memphis is doing and how this makes them better ???

It's also possible NO realized that they weren't going to be able to get Myles and needed to go to Plan B. It also changes who holds the 10th pick and perhaps who will drop to 13.

Oh, NO wanted to dump Bledsoe. They don't consider that a loss. They're happy to do so. He had a bad year there, and no one wanted him around next year. As for Lowry, NO would have to renounce Ball to try for him, or send him out via S&T. Lonzo's cap hold is $27m, so they're $35m in cap space disappears with him and Hart on the books (cap holds). Hart's is $10.5m, so they could reasonably make an offer for Lowry while keeping Hart. But If Toronto has interest in Ball, there seems a match made in heaven right there.

For Memphis, it's all about the picks. Moving up in this draft to the top 10, and the future Lakers picks are more weapons for them to get another more top tier kind of guy. Adams is also useful for them at the 5, though they'll likely still look for a more permanent answer at the 5.

Probably couldn’t get Pacers or a third team to take Adams and his contract. Good for us as we still have Charlotte and possibly other teams wanting Myles where we could get more if we’re set on making a move.

Chad Ford had Bouknight going 10 before the deal. He now says either Giddey or Ziaire will go 10 and has us taking Bouknight. before he had us on Duarte and he has all kinds of evidence that taking older players in the lottery is a mistake and Duarte is 24.

I'm intrigued by Bouknight. Lots of talent there on offense.

From Scott Agness in his recent writeup at FieldHouse Files:
Of course teams are calling about Turner. And the Pacers talk to other teams daily. Rarely does it lead anywhere. Just remember, it's silly season

Memphis currently has Tillman, Adams, JJJ,and Brandon Clarke down low. Looking at #10 Memphis could now go Kai Jones or Sengun to back up 4 or 5 position. Also could go for another wing as they’re set at PG and have a lot of SG in Allen, Bane, and Bledsoe. So maybe Kispert. I now see that the trade didn’t hurt them as much as it really helped NO.

Have to wonder how the league will view this. Aren't parts of this an August deal? Maybe the draft deal can be submitted to the league as a separate deal.

It’ll all be a “new league year” deal, due to the salary absorption. The players will wear the wrong hat on draft night, but everyone will know where they’re going. Summer League doesn’t take place until Aug 8-17, so the players will even get to play in summer league for the correct teams. It will only affect press conferences.

how is that different from a sign and trade deal involving picks? you have written numerous times about them not working.

Good question.

Because the players being dealt here are all currently under contract. Sign and trades have players that are not under contract, and requires tampering to happen.

However, a Sign and Trade with players not under contract requires illegally negotiating with players when no one is legally allowed to negotiate a contract with players. Some veteran contracts can be extended up until the new league year rolls over, but otherwise, players cannot negotiate a new deal, even with their own team. So, to pick for someone else, and then a week later, have that player be traded for a guy that technically you can’t even express interest in, or negotiate any sort of salary ideas would be clear cut tampering of negotiations outside of allowable negotiating windows.
