My instant reaction is that I really don't like this for Memphis. And I don't like that I don't like it for Memphis because I like Memphis. Val has been integral to Memphis' success/growth and I felt like he had good on-court chemistry. He fit well. Now they have two vets on bad contracts just to move up 7 spots and a late 2022 first? They're planning on moving Bledsoe. That will likely cost assets. There are rumors that they want to move up further. That will cost more assets. Also, this is a draft where, depending on the mock, you'll see a guy in the Top 10 in one place who is 22nd in another. No idea who is actually going to be available. I will give Memphis some allowances, though:
*They're obviously interested in some players likely to be available earlier in the draft that aren't available later. Memphis has shown recently that you've got to trust their scouting department.
*Maybe Val requested a trade and this was the best way to get a similar player and something back.
*Memphis does eventually need to combine assets for talent. They had too many quality players with not enough minutes to play them all when everyone was healthy last year.
*Maybe they've already sussed out a way to unload Bledsoe at a low cost (but if so, why didn't New Orleans find it?)
*If this trade gets Lowry to New Orleans, it perhaps creates a bigger market for Bledsoe.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.
