Here are the teams that can offer $20m: Knicks (not happening with Toppin and Randle), Spurs, Thunder, Mavs, Raps (Siakam), Grizz (JJJ), Hornets and Heat.

That's not a long list. After that, teams can't even offer more than the MLE. Basically, if Spurs, Thunder, Mavs, Hornets or Heat don't offer Lauri a deal then either he returns or the Bulls get a sign and trade where they get something back of value.

That's why Portis blowing up is kind of a big deal. He might take up the slot that would have went to Lauri.

I'm still firmly in the "Lauris best position will be center" camp. As the 3 & 4 position continue to blend, Lauri doesn't have the footspeed to keep up with the Crowders, Giannis, KDs, or Kawhis of the world (just a sampling of the starting 4 of the last 4)

He would however have a footspeed advantage of guys like Zubac, Lopez, Griffin (not Ayton who I think moves pretty well).

I actually think Lauri would be a great fit on the Raptors, Hornets and/or Heat.

Siakam/Boucher & Lauri is a good balanced front court. Same for Adebayo and Markkanen. Washington & Markkanen is a bit more of a stretch today, but I could see it working.

Also those 3 teams would have FVV, LaMelo, and Butler - easily the best playmakers Lauri would have ever played with to date.

Lauri has had bad coaches for most of his career, and has been on bad teams, and played with players that poorly fit with his skillset. Lauri wasn't good enough to rise above these obstacles. Most players aren't.

I'm not a big Lauri fan, but I put the 4 years of disappointment more on the shoulders of the Bulls than on him.

I can’t see Pat Riley using all of his cap space on Lauri. I just don’t. I don’t think Popovich unless they are desperate. Not a big market so maybe.

What I don't see is Lauri's status being resolved quickly. I agree Miami will have their eyes on much bigger prizes - Lowry, Kawhi, they'll somehow try to insert themselves into the Lillard situation.

But if none of those plans come to fruition I feel Lauri could be a real target for the Heat. I feel they lost something when they traded away Olynk, Markkanen could provide what Olynk did and more.

I can't help but still see some diamond in the rough with Lauri. If there's a good player in there, Spoelstra, Riley, and Jimmy will unlock it.

Why wouldn't MIA just bring back Olynyk? He's shown to be a good fit and probably cheaper than Lauri.

That's probably certainly an option. I guess that would come down to what they believe Lauri's ceiling to be?

+1. These outside shooting big men are a dime a dozen nowadays. Olynyk is an unrestricted free agent. He is 30 and shot 39.2% from 3 last year while providing some toughness.

GTFO with those stats and facts! Let's all just agree that Markkanen is a very poor man's Kelly Olynyk...

Looking at Lauri's games, as a starting PF last year he was at 23p/7r/1a p36 @ 66.5%TS in a 4th option, perimeter wing role. These are very good numbers. I think this is forgotten with how the season went and the vuc trade. The overall season numbers don't really tell the whole story.

Then WCJ gets benched and he's effectively playing C next to Thad (which I have always said and has been a big no no). He happens to get in a 7 game slump. His numbers drop.

Then the vuc trade happens and Lauri is now an after thought. Still a team player. He without complaint plays an 8th man role. 16.5p/7.6r/1.3a p36 @ 62%TS. These are very good role player numbers.

I think Lauri can still easily average 20/8 @ 60+%TS with a competent PG and a rim protector next to him. He's getting undervalued here but if he goes to the right situation, he will definitely be the next former bull to pop.

EDIT: To emphasize the competent PG part,

"23p/7r/1a p36 @ 66.5%TS in a 4th option"

Is the average of
30p/8.2r p36 @ 77%TS without coby on the floor
vs
21p/6.7r p36 @ 63%TS with Coby on the floor

We'll all know in roughly a week, since as I type this Free Agency officially opens in roughly 143 hours.

If Lauri is good as he's made out to be by some folks, surely at least one team will gladly pay Lauri $100 million over the next 4 years?

At the very least, we'll have teams fighting to offer us an asset to acquire Lauri via S&T? At a first-year salary of at least $20 million or so, for a player that good.

My bold (and likely wrong) prediction is that we don't offer him a QO and let him walk, AND he signs a MLE deal somewhere, AND we angrily debate our move for years.

And I'll predict that just like every other minor role player that's left like Bobby, Kris, Wendell, Doug, Omer, probably Coby, nobody will give a rat's ass about him anymore once he's gone.

Are you kidding? Do you know how often past Bulls players are brought up over and over again on these boards?

Lauri isn't an entirely worthless player, so if he goes to a team that utlilizes relatively well, you sure as hell better expect plenty of Lauri threads on here discussing him. It's inevitable.
Why so serious?

Who still gets brought up here on a regular basis? Jimmy? Derrick?

Nobody really cares about the nobodies years after they're gone. Niko was easily better than Lauri ever was and I don't see many pining for him to come back here.

Even Spencer Dinwiddie really doesn't generate much chatter here and he was probably the biggest whiff of all.

Um... people were talking about Bobby and Cam all month. There’s a whole thread on whether we gave up on cam Payne too soon.

Because they were in the Finals. Nobody's gonna care about Cam next season. I didn't see anyone say "boy we screwed up, really shoulda kept Bobby."

Hell right now, how many people are proposing going with Payne for the PG spot? Everyone's on the freakin Lonzo train.

This is why you dont draft bigman with your lottery picks unless they're going to be a clear cut difference maker in the NBA. You can find elite bigman outside the lottery as proven the last decade. 2 wasted #7 picks in 2017/2018.

His future is a S&T.

His future is a S&T. We need a solid defensive piece next to Vuc and Lauri is not that.

What I’ve been saying for years.

Look at the Dubs w Wiseman instead of Melo. With Melo and Klay coming back they’d be contenders again.

Return to Chicago Bulls
