Never understood the terrible draft picks angle.
Rui is at least more or less, neutral in stock since the draft.
Deni definitely declined in value, but it's not based on him sucking, it's based on him not seeing the floor in a Westbrook/Beal focused offense. Deni's positive side hasn't been indicted at all really, he's just a ??? who proved nothing while playing not very much at all as a rookie.
We'll see. Haven't liked what they've done at all with the 2nd's, but getting Rui and Deni at slot were value. I get why people wanted Halibutorn, but at slot last year, Haliburton was basically the best high floor guy on the board, and Deni was the best ceiling option. I go best ceiling every time when the roster isn't good enough w/another high floor guy to make a jump.
I do see the value in Haliburton from the stance that he was a near lock to be at worst, an excellent 3rd or 4th option on a good team, and a great trade piece, which is definitely the best counter to taking Deni there. Otoh, Deni has a chance to be special, and Hali had a limited ceiling, and was much more valuable for teams that had their elite players already, than for a team that had 1 elite player, and not much else. I would have been 1000% being Hali at slot if we'd had two 20something studs at the time but we didn't, we had a question mark in Rui, and Beal, and nothing else young worth a damn (I guess Bryant).
That pick might end up hurting us long term, but the good process behind it, best practices and all, is what I want a franchise to do. I don't want us nibbling around the edges with peripheral pieces when we have a low upside, mediocre roster, we need to keep swinging for the fences until we hit. Not try to simply hit singles and doubles.
I do think Rui less upside than Deni. And the Admiral pick was bad. Drafting is a crapshoot where we had picks under Tommy. I agree we should go high upside, really don’t want Duarte for example in our situation.
