Re: Landry Shamet discussion, news and highlights
Shamet is going to be a nice addition guys. He’s a deadeye volume shooter that can really spread the floor. Galloway and Moore were typically inches away from the 3 point line whereas Shamet can be 1-3 feet back and fire away. Suns sorely needed a player of his caliber off the bench when the starters or Payne weren’t getting things going offensively so I’ll happily take Shamet over Carter and the 29th pick. Part of me feels like James Jones and the front office feel they missed out on a opportunity to get Luke Kennard last offseason and they don’t want to do that again.

Win all the way around.
Yep, this is a great way to look at it.
I'm all for this trade. fwiw, our last pick at #29

Basically this is the way I look at it as well. Sure you never know what you miss on when you don't draft a player but Shamet is likely to give the team more than the combination of Carter + 29
And like was say. They can use the money to sign a veteran big for depth. McGee, Dwight Howard.

I dont know anything about Javon Carter, so maybe you guys can tell me what we are getting (comparison?)
Shamet was great for the Nets. he started slow with a 6 week slump, but really he was still getting over COVID. He was lights out after that. he shot 43% from three after that awful start. And he isnt some stand in the corner shooter. he hits them off balance, coming off screens, off the dribble. he is the korver/reddick type guy who moves and just needs an inch to drill it. he put it on the deck too, sometimes to the detriment, but he can attack a close out. defensively he plays hard and is a pest, but isnt a great defender. he ran PG for us at times too.
Playoffs Nash refused to play him, opted to run harris into the ground playing him 48 minutes. More poor coaching then Landry not earning playoff minutes

Jevon Carter is a defensive specialist. He's a great on ball defender, but his limited size prevents him from guarding anything other than 1s and small 2s. He's a decent shooter, but his size again becomes an issue because he struggles to shoot over closeouts from bigger players. He'll hit wide open looks, but not much else. He doesn't run the point very well for a guard his size and has limited handles and passing ability. He's a high energy guy who thrives on being a defensive pest, picking up PGs full court and hustle. His work ethic is unmatched and has been his calling card since college, and is widely regarded as a plus in the locker room and a great teammate.

I think Carter would work extremely well playing along side Harden for 10-15 mins a game. It let's him guard the opposing teams PG but not have to do anything but stand in a corner and shoot 3s. He's a bad ball handler and doesn't have a good feel for running an offense.Prokorov wrote:I dont know anything about Javon Carter, so maybe you guys can tell me what we are getting (comparison?)

I like Carter, he has his flaws but he's a great guy to have in the lockroom because he works his ass off and really gives a ****.

Nice he can shoot them in so many different types of ways and shot 43% after those 6 weeks. We don't have many guys who can shoot a % like that..heck, only Payne did, but nobody near that shot them off balance, coming of screens, etc. I knew he was a good shooter since he shot 44% his final couple year in college and over 42% a couple years ago.

Good deal in my eyes. I'm looking forward to see him play. He is young and I liked him a lot on the other teams he played.

Our bench will be a strength if a couple guys come through
Payne, Shamet, Nader, Johnson, and McGee could dogpile some other second units. Good speed and athleticism and some boys who can can some threes. That should be a hectic bunch

No, this one was for news and discussion. Nothing has been censored. There was another trade thread. No need to continue to repeat your thoughts that you have posted everywhere else here though. Everyone is well aware of them. This one is for current news and information.

My comments were on topic and discussing how he was acquired. A thread from July 29th isn't "new information", so there is no need to attempt to censor any thoughts I may have, because I stick to the topic.
But I get it, the only thoughts that are allowed to be "repeated", are thoughts that align with yours. Its not a discussion, its padding only thoughts that agree with yours.

Hope he plays well, don't see how he beats out other players in the rotation from the playoffs.

Trouble with Shamet…. If he plays well, we won’t be able to afford to keep him
And if he doesn’t , we’ll, we didn’t need him.
Kind of a sham situation

It's the same as the Payton situation. If they play well our starters will play even fewer minutes, which will definitely be beneficial come the playoffs, and if they don't play well then CP3 and Book will have close to their normal workloads and we'll still be in the playoffs.Frank Lee wrote:Trouble with Shamet…. Well then the move makes sense. We already knew Javon wasn't gonna play a major role being that he was a Sg in a Pg body. Suns probably already had inside knowledge on the fact that they would sign Elfrid to play 3rd pg and really needed a true bench Sg. So even if we can't keep Shamet, his contract is one year shorter (money free up, but if he excels, then maybe he can be signed and traded for pieces at worst.

Jones must know how he can use Shamet.
Our offense is best when there is ball and player movement and Shamet will be instucted to work off-ball to get free. The other guys like Johnson and Nader are more stand still who occupy the corners. So basically the Galloway role but playable on defense. That's the case for Shamet.
I still wonder though why this is his 4th team after 3 seasons and why contenders trade him for worse bits. Teams had bench runs against the smaller Payne/Galloway lineup and Monty then refused to play Galloway so Shamet will have to be able to guard those streaky shooters like Connaughton, Monk, Mills, Kennard, Clarkson.

I wouldn't be too surprised if they kept him and got rid of someone like Saric instead, but it would depend on cost. He'd have to be cheaper than Payne. They may also be able to S&T him. Though if they don't want the salary back it won't be a big deal. He may only overlap with Paul for 1 year on his next deal (if Paul is only here two more years) so I think they probably look at it as having options. I don't think they traded for him with the assumption they will let him go for sure after a year, unless they purely just wanted to find a way to dump Carter's salary in Ayton/Bridges first year while upgrading that position for a year....which, if they HAD to find a way to dump Carter's salary his 3rd year I get that. I was surprised at that 3 year contract to begin with.

Good listen about Shamet from David Nash and Max on the IV Point Play. They compare him to Cam Johnson.
