Why the interest in Theis? Are they trying to win more now?
I think they just want a vet big who can help teach guys how to communicate on D and stretch the floor a bit. Seems Olynyk is gone so they needed someone

His end of season interview made it pretty obvious this was coming, not many folks who know a lot about the team will be surprised.

Casual fans who don't know how the cap works or track off-season stuff will probably think wtf when he's not on the roster next season, but otherwise this isn't a shocker.

With both Brown and Thompson traded, Boston could/should be looking for some size such as Green.

Woj seems to be saying that the Heat, Raptors and Lowry have agreed to a S&T that would have Dragic and Precious end up in Toronto. Using his draft language to avoid the obvious tampering.

If this happens what does the league do?

I mean we saw last year.

I'm skeptical it happens again.

Detroit has been linked to having interest in Olynyk, Noel, Theis for bigs and THJ and Norman Powell as wing scorers. Interesting that point guards don't seem to be on their radar. Detroit could have ~18M in cap space.

I'm guessing Detroit let's Killian and Cade attempt to run the show this season, get them the reps and see where they end up on the development curve by the end of the season.

We should have a good idea of what type of player Killian is by next March/Early April.

The Front Offices of Sacramento and Milwaukee are/were considered commoners while Miami and Toronto are supposed to be royalty.

Not sure if the league will apply the rules/policies equally or will cut the royalty some slack.

Yeah, and you can always just sign a Raul Neto type for the vet min at any time, too. Might as well use your capspace on your primary/secondary targets and find a depth PG with your exceptions.

I'm genuinely confused as to when teams, players, and agents had to stop talking this summer due to the funky Covid schedule.

In any event, it's a bad look for the NBA that the Heat exercised Dragic's option during the moratorium period and are going to end up trading him less than 24 hours later for a free agent who they're theoretically not allowed to talk to.

I think they should probably just get rid of the moratorium period. Once a player is done playing on his current contract, let everyone call the agent. The best players are gonna go where they want anyway. At least the rest of the league can proceed with other plans and everyone has a chance to make a pitch.

Yeah once a rule is so obviously violated anyway, you may as well just embrace it. You can't negotiate with a player still under contract and in the playoffs for example, but once a players season ends, you can negotiate, but it is not a legal contract until after the draft.

I can't help but wonder how good Woj's access is going to remain if he keeps blowing the gaff on questionable trades every year.

I mean the better question is why are the agents and/or front offices talking to him right now?

Yeah while I get the temporary value of having what might be the biggest free agency move of the off-season 20 hours before it can happen, feels like some people are not going to want to share info with him if he puts them in a terrible spot like this.

I thought the moratorium occurs from the free agency start date to when teams can sign the contracts agreed to - so from Aug 2nd - Aug 6th.
The options, Team or Player are picked up by the end of the league year which was today.

What? That's a negotiated date for a negotiated option. Nothing unfair happened to Dragic or other teams here. And once they've picked it up they are allowed to trade him.

And this isn't a moratorium issue. The moratorium starts tomorrow at 6pm EST. And obviously the league doesn't want open season talking to players under contracts to other teams. Hence why if this specific deal happens its a problem. But nothing untoward at all about Miami picking up his option on the designated date.
