I think they should probably just get rid of the moratorium period. Once a player is done playing on his current contract, let everyone call the agent. The best players are gonna go where they want anyway. At least the rest of the league can proceed with other plans and everyone has a chance to make a pitch.

What? That's a negotiated date for a negotiated option. Nothing unfair happened to Dragic or other teams here. And once they've picked it up they are allowed to trade him.

And this isn't a moratorium issue. The moratorium starts tomorrow at 6pm EST. And obviously the league doesn't want open season talking to players under contracts to other teams. Hence why if this specific deal happens its a problem. But nothing untoward at all about Miami picking up his option on the designated date.

everyone and their mother knew what miami's plans are once dragic's option is picked up. It doesn't really take a leak to know they are planning to sign and trade for Lowry.

Absolutely. The problem in the Woj tweet is the specific mention of Precious. Not sure why he didn't just say Miami expects to be a frontrunner using Dragic plus incentive in a S&T. Other than this obsession with being first of course.

Right, but the question that arises is whether they still pick up his option if they don't have a S&T lined up for Lowry, or do they decline it and operate as an under the cap team heading into free agency? The risk they should be running isn't there.

The problem with the current system is the teams who aren't calling agents and gaming the system are operating at a disadvantage.

It's an interesting point. Woj either has credibility or he doesn't. Since he makes a living off being credible it would be interesting for him to deny this being a credible post based on real info regarding tampering.

Stein just out saying the Mavs are convinced Lowry to Miami is done and are moving on to the next target. So where are we on tampering and if we should care or not?

So just change the rule and allow teams to call the agent once that player's season ends. It makes zero sense to have the rule, have everyone routinely violate it, and then put yourself in a position as a league where you're only selectively enforcing it.

Could be I guess. But Dragic is a big drop from Lowry and I'd be stunned if missing out on Lowry has them settling on Dragic this quickly. This is their one potential shot at free agency for the next 3 years. Unless Toronto is willing to take back Powell/Burke/WCS which I can't imagine.

The NBA might as well just drop the tampering rules if they aren't going to enforce them consistently.

Haynes says Kawhi expected to re-sign with Clippers but will listen to other teams.

I think it's one of those don't ask, don't tell. The Bucks bungled it when it got leaked that the deal was agreed to 3 days prior to FA tampering period beginning.

Right, I'm pretty much there too. But they failed on the don't tell part here is this is as done as it sounds.

Powell+Burke for Dragic?

Dallas picked up WCS so Powell is even less necessary to the Mavs.

that's worse than keeping dragic. I would probably just send precious along with dragic to get a C like olynyk and/or Noel.

Yeah probably needs some compensation going to Raptors. Maybe Powell+Green.

I hope you get your C one day :)

I just don't understand the incentive for Toronto to take Dragic's contract for Lowry.
Better to just let Lowry walk.
Precious is nice, but just don't see this deal being worth it for Toronto unless there's picks involved.

It's not that Lowry is worth draft picks. I just don't see Toronto helping out Miami by taking back Dragic.
If the positions were reversed, how would Miami feel about taking back Hood and Baynes?

At this stage just have free agency the day after championship is over and give them a week-ish to discuss. Official signing to be the 2nd Friday.

Draft can follow thereafter so whoever lose free agency can still pivot to the future .

That's an odd deal, maybe they are going after Wright instead for themselves?
