extending Wendel Carter JR.
Looks like it is on the table:
Report: Orlando Magic could sign Wendell Carter Jr. to a $70M contract extension

Spoiler:
When you look at this list, I think it's clear that something in the 8-10 mill per year range makes far more sense. Unlike Isaac who has also had injury concerns, WCJ hasn't shown the same level of impact when he has played.

I like WCJ better than Mo, but I agree $70M better be over 5 years escalating, and that 5th a team option.
No way can they pay him more than Fultz or J.I..

I feel like Orlando sometimes outbid themselves in scenarios like this. Why not wait it out? Are they also going to extend Bamba too or does this mean he’s gone?

Re: extending Wendel Carter JR.
what happens when you extend him and Mo potentially out-plays him this season. What do you do?
I don't like the move and I rather re-sign 1 of them after this season at a higher cost when we have a better understanding of who is the better fit.

agree with most of you. let it play out in the season. WCJ hasnt been able to play even close to a full season in 3 years.

Re: extending Wendel Carter JR.
Sounds like an awfully high number, and i usually end up on the high side when i am estimating extensions. I preferred to lock up Isaac last offseason, but with Mo and Wendell I think we may want to just see how the competition plays out and worry about matching the market for whomever we prefer, or both if the market is soft for bigs.
Richaun Holmes should be an interesting market this offseason. I love his game, but we will have to see where he lands. I can't imagine he approaches $18M and would argue he is far more valuable than either of our guys. If he gets around $12-15M, I don't know how we could justify paying Mo or Wendell equal or greater. UNLESS either have a huge improvement in production this season.

Re: extending Wendel Carter JR.
14 per for WCJ (assuming 5 years)? No way. Centers of his caliber are not worth that kind of money. Especially not 18 per if it's 4 years. That is terrible value.
Honest question, forget the baggage. If you're trying to win for the next 2 seasons: WCJ for 14 per or Dwight for 5 per?

The most Magic thing ever is to lock up a center long term on a big contract in today's NBA

Re: extending Wendel Carter JR.

What is the basis for this? not even a full season of work and we ready to do this? All the good graces the FO has earned might sour for me if they do this

Really hope this rumor isn't true. While I get setting him at a number so that you do not have to bid more after the season should he drastically improve, I agree that $14 million per for WCJ is high.

Re: extending Wendel Carter JR.
I think it's important to note that the article states that we have ALREADY agreed to terms and rival executives think predict its in the realm of 70m
It's def. an overpay as we sit today, but you rarely pay for current production, but instead for projected potential.
Also, it looks good by management paying our guys ahead of time and showing we're equally invested in their development.
I think 70m is fair and it will age well. WCJ will out perform the contract by year 2.
Even better if we continue the trend and front load the contract.
This also confirms that upper management views WCJ as the COTF.
Oh and bye bye Bamba.

If it's 4/70, I would rather not have a center. That's way too much for WCJ.

Re: extending Wendel Carter JR.
There is very, very low chance that Bamba and Wendell can "outplay" some $10M a year at most contract.
Centers most of the time need guard plays to be in position where they are useful. And let's be honest, vast majority of field goal attemps on Orlando will come from Hampton , Suggs, Harris, Cole ( Fultz? ) and Ross.
Now this also could mean that Bamba is asking to be moved or he informed team he has no desire to stay, or team gave up on him. But even if that is a case, i would not rush to resign Wendell. He has been hurt whole career long. Not to mention he is kind a mediocre rebounder, has no jumpshot today and struggles against taller players.

I personally think with inflation the salary cap is going to blow up soon. It's better to lock him down. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't offer Bamba a smaller deal too.

Re: extending Wendel Carter JR.
I'm sure a games played incentive will be attached. I think Isaac's contract can drop down to 14m+ a year if he doesn't meet the games played threshold.YosemiteSam wrote:pepe1991 wrote:He has been hurt whole career long. That is a worry tho. You almost get a Justice Winslow vibe from WCJ.

Re: extending Wendel Carter JR.
I like WCJ more than most around here but I'm not locking him up before we see more from him.
We haven't even seen him play with JI or Fultz, let alone Suggs.
And with a new coach, too many question marks.

Re: extending Wendel Carter JR.
At this amount my worry is the years - at least with Fultz we were only on the line for 2 years guaranteed - I would like that option with WCJ - even overpay him for 2 years and then have a team option for year 3. Long contracts are death in modern NBA unless you have max cornerstone
