Well, Spain won in 2002 but Pau is the only who remains.
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

In fact, the ball movement was actually great the majority of the time. And defensively they were pretty good, as well. Spain’s guards were making some tough looks out there.

There’s this exaggerated idea that the teams outside the US are all these idealistic displays of how basketball is meant to be played while Team USA is some ego-driven ISO-centric AAU-inspired collection that relies on foul calls to be effective. But I didn’t see that at all today. They missed a lot of good looks from three and eventually when they started doing down, the game was blown open. And Spain is a good team, so no shame in it it being competitive for a while.

All the open 3s we missed were super frustrating, but otherwise I agree, there wasn't a ton to complain about offensively. As Chuck noted, we were probably guilty of over passing at times. But for the most part we were moving the ball well and getting wide open looks pretty much at will. It still got a little hairy in the 4th. But once we started making them, Spain was in trouble. Rubio had one of the highest scoring games in Olympic history and we still outscored them by 24 over the final 23 minutes or so.

(Side note: I looked up the list of top scoring games in the Olympics, and Oscar Schmidt ... holy sht.)

Jrue Holiday is such a game changer for this team. If we learn nothing else from this tournament we need to remember to always have strong, defensive minded guards on the roster. Nobody else is quite like Jrue though.

Well even the disastrous 2019 team had one of those pesky perimeter defenders, Marcus Smart. You need the Jrues Holidays for sure but the difference makers will always be the superstars like Durant.

Nah guys chil out.

1st Slovenia will have a very very hard time even making it to the finals
2nd of all even if they do USA is going to trash teams left and right to win gold no worries there. They have just too much talent on that roster.

For gods sake seeing Lillard shooting open 3pts cause they need to cover Durant and stuff is making me cringe hard. Same **** with Booker etc

Smart was also banged up and not nearly on the same level as Holiday. To that point though, the size/strength of Smart’s backcourt teammates Kemba Walker & Donovan Mitchell really hurt us at times. I’m at the point where I’d rather send Alex Caruso than a lot of guys. But yeah, helps to have the greatest American FIBA player of all time for sure. Tremendous equalizer.

Bringing back bad memories... that USA Team was hot garbage; they were starting Andre Miller and a near 40 year old Reggie Miller with Antonio Davis and company. Pretty sure the Spanish game was the last of 3 straight losses for them.

Yeah I thought the Iso ball stuff was valid in the earlier games, but they're mostly making the extra pass now. There's a few hero ball moments, but I'm not ripping my hair out.

Yes, a worse version of the Dallas Mavericks vs an all-NBA team. Mouth-watering.

I think Australia will be a bigger challenge than Spain. They have a much better defense and they should match better with US. I don't think US can generate as many wide open 3s with them. As a US fan I hoped that Spain would draw Australia, so they do the dirty work for US.

Marcus Smart is defensive minded but nowhere near Jrues level tbh. He plays hard, but flopping doesnt have much of an impact in fiba games, plus he isnt exactly a great decision maker and can give a team a spark with some hustle plays and threes OR he can simply contribute nothing. Jrue is definitely more than just a Pat Bev / Smart type of player.
So many people who attain the heights of power in this culture—celebrities, for instance—have to make a show of false humility and modesty, as if they got as far as they did by accident and not by ego or ambition.
