Good get. Still not sure how this improves our perimeter defense.

It gives us our small ball big when we switch. Gay would've ate against those small lineups Gobert couldn't take advantage ofstitches wrote:Good get. Still not sure how this improves our perimeter defense.

Yes! But he’s a 4/5 now.
Ingles is cooked.

As strange as it sounds this is the Favors replacement. In today's NBA Gay is now a 4/5.

I think a pullup mid range shooter is the last player we needed on this roster. Guess he's an OK defender, but doesn't really do much to solve our problems there either.

Happy with this, although his age gives some pause. Still, as a 15-20mpg player, he should help with his versatility at the 3/4 and maybe even 5. Last year he was at 11ppg, 5rpg, 21mpg, 38% 3's. Respectable stretch 4. Not an efficient scorer, but I don't think the Jazz need to worry too much about him scoring for them. He's got length & still decent athleticism. He's no lock-down defender at this point, but I still prefer him over Niang in that role by a mile. If he can add a bit of time as the small ball C, that's another bonus.
The price tag is reasonable. Win.

Not sure how much Rudy really has in the tank, he still looked pretty good with the Spurs but this is a 15-season veteran with a lot of mileage in his legs. However I guess this means Georges is either gone or coming back for a salary close to the minimum, which is good news.

I wonder if this is a precursor to an Ingles trade who costs twice as much. I'd be against it, for the record.
Don't know how much Gay has left but it looks like a pretty good move if he can still play. The two issues I have are that it doesn't address our need for perimeter defense and that we are making our team very old.

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

Reminiscent of the Joe Johnson signing, paid off in the playoffs.

If Gay can have JJ-level impact in the playoffs, then this is an absolute steal.
As for Ingles ... are we really wanting Forrest or Butler playing big PG minutes if Conley or DM have to miss any time? Losing Ingles means needing to replace him with a capable wing AND a PG, IMO. I just don't see the benefit of moving Joe.

Why are people thinking that the signing of Gay is a precursor to the Jazz offloading Ingles or Bogey? Gay isn't that wing defender we need and he hasn't been a starter for the last two seasons. I see him filling the Clipper/Batum role for the Jazz.

Well, Rudy Gay is a shot creator, and the very last thing the Jazz needed was a shot creator. To me this makes more sense if Bogey is traded, but that doesn't seem to happen.
Batum was always a very different player than Rudy Gay. He's been a super utility guy his entire career and that's why it worked for LAC. Rudy Gay has improved on a lot of supporting attributes, but he's not a utility guy. At the end of the day he is a guy who gets you tough buckets and that is not what the Jazz needed.

Re: Rudy gay to Utah
Very happy with this signing. Still a solid player and it gives our bench a huge lift over Niang. I'm pretty convinced that bench players who can create their own offense at near league average efficiency are really valuable, and Gay is pretty good off-ball, too - good cutter, good spot-up shooter.
