Australia destroyed them in garbage time, while Slovenia gave away the 4th quarter.

Slovenia was leading by 22 after 3 quarters. Australia was leading by 12.

I don't know who is better, but this looks like a poor argument to me.

If by garbage time you mean from the 2nd quarter on (Aussies 79-37 run) I stand corrected

Let's not compare players with legitimate ties with the country (Mannion, Thybulle, most Nigerian players) with naturalized players like Schilb and Tobey. It's not the same at all.

Exactly, one of these is not like the others.

Thybulle spent his childhood in Australia and legitimately started in the Australian junior systems before moving back to the US in elementary school.

He was a dual citizen before he made the NBA.

He wasn't naturalized for the purposes of winning basketball tournaments.

On a separate note, Jock Landale should be in the NBA. Wouldn't be surprised to see him snapped up after the tournament.

He will be.

He had offers last season but wanted to win the NBL championship - which he did.

I think Nick Kay might attract some offers as well after this performance.

What rivalry  When did Australia beat USA at any official competition

Thybule spent about the same amount of time in Australia that Andrew Bogut spent in Milwaukee. Had he even been back since he was 11? Whatever, happy to see him playing well for the Boomers. Seems like a great dude.

Also there is a family connection with Australia. Some said his mother was Australian but I thought his grandmother was.

He spent enough time to become an Australian citizen when he was a kid well before he was an NBA player.

Probably no different to Bryant and Italy.

Fact of the matter he spent his formative years in the Australian underage systems.

A lot different to Slovenia just naturalizing players they need in certain positions

There can't be rivalry if one team have never beaten another in a meaningful game.

It’s just funny to me that when a guy chooses not to play for the Boomers (Ben Simmons) Aussies call him a “yank” but are up in arms to defend the Australianness of a way less Australian Thybule. On ya, mates.

No one is up in arms. Thybulle has been great for the Boomers and will be for multiple Olympics I imagine.

Though the insinuation that it's anything like the Slovenian naturalizations are fairly hilarious.

I can't see much regarding Simmons being called a yank. He legitimately grew up in Australia, played a lot of Australian rules football etc growing up and moved to Montverde when he was around 15/16. People are just tired of his excuses.

The concerns about Simmons’ character didn’t magically appear the moment he arrived on campus in Baton Rouge. Those sentiments also have been expressed by members of the Australian national team who have spent time with him at the junior and senior levels. Australian players and coaches who have been around him don’t speak about him in flattering terms, calling him “the Yank” to highlight how different he is compared with most of the players from that country, and perhaps highlight how much moving to the United States at a young age and immersing himself in the AAU world has shaped him.

From even before he shunned the national team in 2016 and 2019.

As recently as 2020 Andrew Bogut has talked on his podcast about how he feels Simmons changes his accent to sound “more Australian” when he’s Down Under, strickly for marketing reasons. I also have a couple Aussie buddies who do nothing but **** talk the dude who I’ve been going back and forth with, so maybe I’m projecting their “up in armsness” on to some of you.

Nah...
I've never heard anyone say he's 'a yank'.
I've heard plenty of people say 'he acts like a yank'.

Thybulle appears to act like an Aussie.

Does this make any rational sense? Nope.
Am I happy every time I get to watch Thybulle play for the Boomers? Yup.

It must be the accent that confused you, we didn't call him yank, we called him wanker.

Aussie here. I lost most confidence in our chances when we lost Baynes who I really felt was a potential difference maker between us and the USA. But the Argentina performance has demonstrated the team is strong so I think there's a chance.

Btw, was just thinking. Imagine the USA had their best squad here!

Starters would be Lebron/Curry/Davis/Kawhi/Durant with Kyrie/Harden as first option I'd imagine? Would be pretty epic.

Im not a fan of ben simmons at all but i can definitely relate to that. A lot of black people can, really. We call it "code switching." To simplify it, basically around white people we try to speak differently than we do around each other. A lot of historical reasons for this but recently some black people have been lobbying for us to stop doing this. Definitely a complex issue.

Simmons accent does a good job of highlighting one of the many reasons why he's a clown. He developed a pretty much full on American accent after a year in the US, meanwhile guys like Mills/Bogut/Ingles/Exum sound almost exactly the same now as they did 10 years ago.
IMO, that alone says enough about the type of guy Simmons is
