Instead of paying big dollars for mediocre players, they can sign bigger talent at a bargain rate.

Whether you like them or not Schroeder, oubre and Markennin are all on the board and can be had for less than market. And there is still some young talent in Harry Giles and Willy Hernangomez available.

Sometimes it backfires, but I like it better as an approach compared to the Knicks where they have a lot of money tied up in lesser players for multiple years.

You mean the method that lands us players like Stanley Johnson, RHJ, Baynes, Len? Who was the last free agent we signed that actually helped this team? Maybe whatever method they're using here needs a slight rework lol.

Alternatively, raptors have shown they do not necessarily need to sign an FA to win. A lot of their success from drafting, developing and pulling of a trade when available.

I get that it's nice to get a FA. It'd be super exciting if/when we land a good one, but the front office has been pretty solid over the last few years building winning/competitive teams.

Oh I love our front office for the reasons you mentioned but let's be real here, they have really been bad in free agency during their tenure. They cant even sign under the radar guys, which they try year in year out for.

I will assume it's more our management still having PTSD from Carroll because players will come here if you pay them to.

Yeah, it could be a PTSD issue. That Carroll thing was brutal.

It can also be a timing concern with more conscientious cap management. It's also tough when you have bigger markets, or teams with more cap room throwing significant deals at tom, dick, and harry. I also think players going forward may be more receptive to Canada/Raptors, and not as xenophobic as previous players have been.

I just know we are gonna be bad next year. My dream is to trade Pascal and FVV. Worst case is we are bad and Pascal, FVV and Trent just jack up all the shots. Which is likely. Get rid of them.

Let OG become the best contract in the NBA. Make him be the man. Let barnes have the ball from jump. Give Flynn minutes. give Precious minutes. Even let someone like Trent who is much younger than Pascal and FVV, have a chance to be a 25+ point scorer.

We have to maximize our contracts. Don't think Pascal is getting better. Don't think FVV is getting better. Blow it up

Haha so many questions, so little answers. We did re-sign Trent Jr though, at least that is confirmed lol

Guessing the Lowry trade logistics get finalized by tonight since contracts can be signed right after midnight.

They have to be focusing on trades at this point, the cupboard is near empty regarding free agency

Was he that good or was he just an upgrade over the scrubby Baynes? When you set such low standards then of course you'll find upgrades over the likes of Stanley Johnson, Mccaw, Baynes lol.

It is still going backwards from the standards we have become accustomed to. I like Birch but hard for me to get excited over a 28 year old backup center.

Don't move the goalposts. You said "who actually helped this team". Birch absolutely helped this team, which is why we're bringing him back.

I don’t mind our patient approach. Unless it’s a super star or your team needs one more supporting piece to compete for a title free agency is a waste of time and resources. I’d rather have sat out on free agency then throwing the farm at Evan Fournier or something.

Not moving the goalposts. Just mentioning when you bring a guy in to replace the scrub you signed in the first place, are you doing a good job on that front? None are good enough to replace the guys they did originally (Ibaka/Gasol) and aren't NBA starting centers.

Blessing and a curse that this team generally doesn't leak what it doesn't want out there, like the Barnes pick or that Pascal is available.

But they maybe aren't as forthright about direction and moves as some would like. You kinda just have to read between the lines a bit. They're operating on separate tracks, young prospect/asset accumulation and the continual search for a star with Pascal as the main bait.

So that's where we are. Ultimately, it would be nice to have Richaun Holmes right now but it didn't work out. They won't nail all their moves. And as noted, it's a real pattern now that they're not great at signing FAs. Carroll/Baynes the best examples.

But they're trying. They're in LA for a reason.

So you didn't mean "Who was the last FA Toronto brought in who actually helped the team?" then. Got it

You can’t just ignore re-signing our own free agents. Fred, Kyle, and Serge were all UFA and each was integral to the championship.

Well forget Simmons then, Masai should focus on the Sacramento trade, getting back a Mitchell or Haliburton
