Bulls Remaining Roster Spot Discussion

Post#1 » by sco » Fri Aug 6, 2021 12:36 pm

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we currently have the following under contract:

PG: Ball, Caruso
SG: Lavine, White, Ayo
SF: Derozan, TBJ
PF: Williams, Simonovic
C: Vuc, Bradley

That's 11. So that's 4 needed. We have the 2 2-way spots (What's Dotson's contract status?)

What are our needs and how do we best address them?

Looking at above, I see the following needs to be addressed:

1) A vet back-up PF that can provide defense and stability, and a hurdle for Simonovic to earn minutes.
2) A big-body who can provide C depth if needed.
3) A scoring wing.
4) A vet PG for depth.

Thoughts?

We extended the QO to Javonte Green as well.

Good point! I want him back, he doesn't neatly fit a hole I noted. Also, that could have been to just to protect value.

I would take a look at Paul Millsap. Yes, he is 36 but we are in win now mode. He was AKs 4 next to Jokic in Denver.

He had a solid season last year...Is an UFA...Not the best option but take a look at the market...Theres not much out there.

I would have the roster depth at:

PG: Ball, White, Ayo
SG: Lavine, Caruso , Green
SF: Derozan, TBJ
PF: PW
C: Vuc, Bradley, Simonovic

Chicago could really use another SF and two more PF's. IMO, the idea of just renouncing Lauri is getting more appealing by the minute.

Right now the needs appear to be backups at the SF, PF and C. What makes everything seem so up in the air is come people put Simonovic at the PF and some at the C. Well that's a obvious sign that we shouldn't be counting on him if nobody has seen him enough to be certain what the heck position he really plays

Aldridge would seem to fill the PF and likely the 3rd C spot. The Bulls' brain trust has seen the players out on the market so they must have an idea who they would like to bring in.

If they're waiting it could be for some bigger trade to come about that would get other players out on the market. For example if Siakam is traded or Simmons then a lot of guys will move and maybe others will be expendable. It could be there are conversations with WASH about their overloaded front court. There's time to make the right move it's not desperation time to jut get a body

I'd roll the dice on Winslow, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Isaiah Hartenstein to round out our roster

I'd fill up whatever remaining spots we have with 6'8 - 6'11 guys to play PF and spot minutes at C. The 4 is by far our thinnest spot; Pat and DeRozan are the only guys who can realistically play the 4. Pat spent 41% of his playing time at PF last season.

We're set 1-3 because we have so many tall players who can play multiple positions:

Ball can play 1-3
White can play 1-2
Ayo can play 1-2
Zach can play 1-3
Caruso can play 1-3
Green can play 2-3
DeRozan can play 1-4
TBJ can play 1-3

AKME wanted versatility of players who can all handle, make plays, defend, and shoot, so it makes sense to have this kind of roster construction. There are only so many minutes available.

We're set at the 5 with Vooch, Bradley, and Simonovic.

Versatile defensive 4 is our biggest need.

If this Finnish media report is accurate that Lauri has multiple offers, it seems the Bulls must be mulling their S&T options, because the outright cap space teams have largely made their choices at this point.

I was scanning the remaining FA list yesterday, and to the extent the Bulls can characterize their existing moves in a way that preserves the MLE (and it seems like they can), there doesn't appear to be a single player worth using it on, so I wonder if they chop it up into chunks to fill several spots.

It's pretty crazy they only have one PF and that it's a guy who played SF last season. They may need to target PF in any Lauri trade.

I don’t count Green yet. Very uncertain what will happen with him.

Neither DeRozan or Williams arent built for PF.
At least Williams not yet.. 6'6-6'7 guys playing PF is odd. I know PJ Tucker played PF too, but he is built like tank vs Demar.

I like James Ennis a lot, espeically if Lauri leaves.

Millsap also still out there and I think he could still play 12-15 solid minutes

Winslow is interesting but I think he's kind of a bad fit now with the other guys we've signed

Mike Scott, Wesley Matthews would be ok vet adds too. Slim pickings right now

I'm not sure what dollar amount Lauri is looking for, but there were rumors at one point linking him to Minnesota - a S&T that brings back McDaniels, Vanderbilt, and Hernangomez gives us that forward depth we're looking for.

Anybody have thoughts on these UFA bigs?

Isaiah Hartenstein
Dj Wilson
Rondae Hollis-Jefferson

Can we get any of them and can they defend?

I'd be fine signing one of them and keeping Felicio, Green and Valentine on minimum deals.

I think Millsap will be the guy, due to the AK connection

Nope, he's definitely not a prototypical PF. But the league has changed. A lot of small ball being played. I think it all depends on the teams system. If he can hold his own defensively against most of the PF's in the league that is all that matters.

Its a position-less league now. Well not exactly position-less but you still have players that can swing between positions based on their skillset. I think we have seen a lot of smaller wing type players playing PF the last couple years. We are also seeing a lot of smaller guards or multiple PG's play next to each other and smaller guards playing SF. Same can be said about the center position. I mean we were playing Thad at center. The league has changed.

Give me Millsap. He can still play a bit and would provide a veteran presence that we will need.

He probably will cost more than the vet min - there was a report that he was considering taking the Warriors' taxpayer MLE, which is about $5.9 M. So we will need to jettison Lauri and make sure that we still have our MLE from the Caruso deal, or work a S&T with Denver.
