Deandre Bembry - what are we getting

Post#1 » by Prokorov » Fri Aug 6, 2021 5:57 pm

Nets signed bembry. I hated the dude cause he seemed to always give us fits in atlanta. but as always the people who watch him 82 times instead of 15 know better.

thoughts?

I always thought he was the guy that pat beverly pretended to be

At a minimum contract, he should have been brought back for sure. He is a good back end of the rotation guy. Especially when we don't even have a backup SG after Harris got suspended.

Solid bench guy that's a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none. Can handle a bit, slash a bit, shoot a bit, and will defend on the other end. Nothing exciting, but also nothing negative.

He's the vanilla ice cream of wing players, which is not necessarily a bad thing if that's what you need.

Good fit for BKN. Not a shooter but you guys have crazy spacing anyway. Decent vision, willing playmaker, hustles, effort on D.

He was wasted here but I can see him being a fan favorite for contenders

You’re getting a 15 minute breather for your backcourt.

I always thought he was an excellent cutter. And sneaky hops. Good for the occasional surprise backdoor lob. Should be good since for you guys since the focus will be on your big 3. On D, he's rangy and seems to in the right spot.

I was hoping we'd keep him as a deep reserve at SG/SF, but it looks like they thought he'd be better off catching on somewhere else. He may have thought the same and it was agreed to let him find a new landing spot, who knows.

I kind of think he would have been brought back if things in SL showed that our new guys in Johnson or Champagnie were going to need a lot of GLeague time before being contributors on the NBA.

For the minimum he is a fantastic depth piece, as long as you aren't expecting him to overachieve. Makes a lot of smart plays but also takes some needless risks. Very passable defensively and can handle the ball if you're short ballhandlers. Good team guy that won't make waves - the Nets were smart to pick him up.

He's the perfect bench player for a team like the Nets. I actually am not happy hearing he signed for the nets. He's not the scorer off the bench but he can do pretty much everything else pretty well for most nights. And he can still hit a 3, drive or score on transition and cuts.

He won't be stealing shots from KD in close playoff games that's for sure.

I feel like I summed it up well in another thread. He's basically an off-brand or slightly less effective Brown. They both play bigger than their size (Brown more than Bembry), pretty crafty/effective inside, solid playmaking and defence while neither can really shoot (Bembry made 14 threes on 26% while Brown made 17 threes on 29%). Bembry can be a bit careless with the ball too (1.4 TOV in 19 MPG).

He's fine for a depth piece or to be getting 10-15 MPG on a team with good offensive players, but he shouldn't ever be more than the 5th option on the floor. I think he'll be good in Brooklyn. The problem he had in Toronto is we needed him to run the offence sometimes (when FVV/Lowry were out) and there were quite a few games at the end of the season where he was taking ~10 shots because all of our main guys were resting.

Thread title confused me. I was like what that was a S&T? I was mentally trying to figure what assets we'd get back

I liked him a lot. Way better than Stanley.
This could be him just asking out of the option and us granting it because we don't really need him.
We already have a bunch of rotation players that can't shoot...

Bembry plays hard, and knows how to dribble. Other than that, I wouldn't expect much. He's a third string guy.

Beverly is quite a bit better than Bembry. Always has been.

He's an active defender and plays hard on that end. He's sneakily athletic and can get up and finish alley-oops. Smart cutter and decent finishing ability. From afar, seems like a great person and teammate. I wouldn't expect him to be a frequent shooter from three, but he can hit the odd one off the catch in the corner. He's unselfish on both sides of the ball and a willing passer.

I’ve always said that he is very good when surrounded by good players. So he’ll be great playing with the big 3. He’ll be terrible if he gets played in all bench lineups.

Well said. Watching Bembry this year I couldn't help but think there's an impactful role player within him, but he's just so consistently inconsistent. For every good read he makes there's an ill-advised pass or momentum breaking mistake.

He should fit well with the Nets knowing he'll always be on the court with am elite advantage creator.
