I watch the Olympic events like the decathlon, where they run (about) a mile, and my mind knows they are blazing but my eyes say they look slow. And I can't figure out why it doesn't translate on TV well. Like if I saw these men or women running down the street or path next to me they would **** blow me out of the water, but on TV it looks like it's a leisurely jog. Kinda funny.

Haha same boat here. I find myself thinking “yea I could do 800m in 2 minutes. That looks easy”

They make it look so easy because their movements are so fluid and efficient. High level athletes are freaks.

Here's a trick, and I'm being serious. Get to a track and record yourself running a 400m or whatever. Then you'll see :lol:

I only say this because I was in track growing up and was considered "good". I have a few on film and oh my god I'm awful.

It's kinda like that Dicaprio flick The Aviator, when he's filming actual planes flying up in the sky and they look slow. He needed something stationary like clouds in the background to get a sense of how fast they were going.

Put one of us out there running next to these people and they'll look like they're flying.

They need a normal-athlete person to help pace the event. Like "here you can see how he compares to your usual 9m/mi runner" :lol:

I was an ok runner in high school and attended the state xcountry meet every year. I remember watching Chris Solinsky race my junior year. Chris ran at UW and At one point held the American record for the 10k.

Anyways, me being the decent distance runner myself tried to run along side him when moving to the next spot to watch the race. He was running a 5k and I damn near was sprinting in order to not really keep up for 100 meters. His time was under 15 minutes on a cross country course which I think is still the state record. Freak

I've always thought they need like a 'normal person ghost runner' projected on the track to see the pace compared to say a 9 min mile time or something

Edit: I see its been covered when viewing the next page :lol:

But yeah, I run quite a bit and if I try doing a tempo run to pick up my pace in short burst half way through, I feel like im sprinting and im barely touching like a 6 min mile.

I've done a marathon in just under 5 hrs and I see the race walkers do a 50 km or 5 miles over a marathon distance in less than 4...

Milbucks96 wrote:How did you guys get into soccer? I really want to learn about and it become a fan but it’s so overwhelming and confusing. What league do I tune into for the best players in the world?

ive played since youth.
and slowly started watching more and more.
and now its the main sport i follow
...and BUCKS 24/7/365 of course.

what ive done is, follow the USa national team.
then, follow the players at each of their clubs.
now, thats a lot, and can be overwhelming and confusing.

the breakdown of the soccer world is like this :
each country has its own league.
England = EPL
Germany = Bundesliga
Spain = La Liga
Italy = SerieA
France = Ligue1
USA = MLS
and so on.
these are the top 5 leagues and our own.

each has its own champion.

in Europe, they then have a tournament of each countries winners, and in these big leagues, up to the top 4 teams. that tourney is called, UEFA Champions League.
this is where u can see the top teams vs each other.
like Manchester City (EPL) vs Bayern Munich (Bundesliga)

and theres a 2nd tier tournament of the next best teams from each countries (in Europe) leagues, called, Europa League.
not as popular or watched, but actually provides better matchups and games earlier in the rounds.

CONCACAF, is the region of North & Central America.
usa, mex, canada, costa rica and others
we also have a Champions League tourney, of the club teams from each country.
most only watch this if their team is in it, and mls is just starting to do well in it.
this tourney starts before mls starts their season, so all the other teams from the other countries are in season, so they usually have the advantage. plus, since mls is newer, the league is just starting to catch/surpass the others.

TLDR
each country has its own league and own champion
each region, has its own tournament

i watch teams that have americans on them, and am not attached to a club

i can discuss this all day, ask questions or message me

Speaking of wildfires, Denver is currently rocking the worst air quality for any major city in the world thanks to the cali fires. Guess my red eyes and sore throat will have a wholseome excuse today.

We had the same thing for a few days over the whole state from those massive fires at the start.of 2020. You know, the regular national **** times before world-wide **** times started.

Indeed very weird.

The situation is somehow even worse than it looks, the northern third of a 3.670 km² island that was populated by ~35k residents plus several thousands of vacationers has been almost totally burned from the western coast (the pic if from this side) to the east coast, and now that the fires are approaching the north coast, where an unknown number of evacuees and locals (at least 20k) have started being evacuated by ferries and boats to the mainland and adjacent islands.

I just SPLURGED on a new set of golf clubs, oh lord. Had the same set since I was 15 and they were really holding me back. Amazing seeing the difference with things like ball speed and smash rate. The fitting experience was fun and it's nice 30th birthday present for myself. So pumped for them to arrive.

My in-laws lake house is right next to some big mechanical engineer guy. He is testing the Hydrofoil electric surfboards and I got to try it out yesterday. Those things are so cool, but at $14k **** that.
