Mathews was disappointing last year. At some point he got in his head that he needed to be "do the dirty work" energy guy. Any scrub on a 10 day contract can do that. He lost focus of his special skill that separates him, he is a flat out sharp shooter. Watching him flail and fall around everywhere and running around like a spaz was just getting to the point of ridiculous. Every time defending or shooting kicking his legs out and flailing around and falling. It was like Mo Wagner but worse. Nobody want to be around that, and it's dangerous for himself and the players he's running into.
Sorry, but this is a terrible take.
Mathews was great two years ago, but for just 227 total minutes, often in garbage time, against teams that hadn't scouted him. What Mathews did last year was prove that he could be the same player over 1038 minutes. He led all non-centers on the roster in TS%, ORtg and free throw rate while avoiding fouls and turnovers. He had a very slight decline in 3P% (from .413 to .384) mostly attributable to the utter lack of spacing because no one else on the roster except Bertans could shoot. And all that "flailing around" led him to rank 7th among non-centers league-wide in FTr.
I can't believe you are upset with a guy because he tried to do more dirty work. I thought his defense was much improved.
