I think it stems from people thinking since they missed out on Lowry that they want to keep Ball now, which could easily be done by backing out of the deal instead. This can easily be done as it isn't 'finalised.' While it wouldn't look good, it poses far less risk/issues.

99% it'll be another front office, calling out the farce on how quickly a S&T was formulated, which may have some legs to stand on.

I was speculating that the Pelicans may have complained about the Heat since their entire off-season was predicated on a Lowry pursuit and then they never got to speak to him.

Someone asked how the NBA could already know that the Bulls and Pelicans never talked about a Ball sign & trade or extension and I said one explanation would be if the Pelicans told them that.

I’m suspecting that New York or the Clippers—both of whom were rumored as being interested in Ball—filed the complaint.

In particular, I’m wondering if the Clips decided to file after they lost to the Bulls on DeRozan. They might feel particularly salty having lost out to the Bulls twice. The Knicks could have also wanted Ball, then pivoted to Fournier.

The trade isn’t the “smoking gun” to me as much as the contract terms being announced within a minute.

For it to have been above board, within a minute, at least 2 text messages or a phone call had to happen, then someone had to call/text Woj and Shams, who then had to write a tweet. It’s hard to believe that would have happened so quickly.

If the Bulls are found guilty and the FO were dumb enough to leave a trail, is this a fireable offense?

clarification, i know executives cant talk to players before Aug 2, but can they offer/talk to other GM/executive for trade proposal before Aug2 and not be considered as tampering?

With what little we know, what you say makes a lot of sense.

Pelicans plan on signing Lowry, find out he's already gone before they can talk to him. They go back to Lonzo and he says he's going to Chicago before Chicago even is able to talk to him and knows a price and tells them to work out a deal. Their plan A and B are now both gone and Griffin was absolutely lambasted in the press for the moves.

They complain about both cases.

This also nullifies all early defenses about the Bulls going through the Pelicans to get a deal done. The Pelicans could have cooperated with Lonzo's agent on the deal and trade terms, but they can still blast the Bulls for tampering.

I don't care if it ever comes out who filed the complaint. In my head it was Schroder's agent with the hail mary move to get him paid.

No. Who cares? Everyone does it and if you don't you can't compete. These are the consequences.

That only applies to trades though. If the goal here is to be punitive, I can't imagine that rule would matter here.

We talked trade with the Pelicans during the deadline and I’m sure numbers were broached then.

It seems like wishful thinking to believe that we could get Ball to agree to an $84m deal without any back and forths in the opening minute of free agency.

The most they could have given him was 4 and 84MM. Wouldn't the Hornets be able to offer him something like 120MM over 5? I mean, they could have played hardball and say "no" and simply matched the offer. Yes, they would have a disgruntled Ball on their hands, but yet they agreed to a sign and trade which also affects Temple as well as he also agreed to a deal. I would think BYC rules would apply, but still...

Didn't the new Pelicans ownership (which may have been an inheritance) complain about the AD tampering also? It would be odd for the Pelicans to complain after being semi-complicit by negotiating a sign and trade.

Another possibility is that management made the deal and ownership continued to have their panties in a bunch about getting steamrolled by a big market again and filed the complaint even though their GM helped facilitate.

So what is our alternative if our trade is voided?
Should the Bulls look at a trade for Ben Simmons centered around Lauri, Thad, and future picks? We need a playmaker and defender on the PNR, Simmons can distribute, defend and rebound. We have our scorers.

Trust me, I totally understand! But what if the NBA voids and block our S&T and were not allowed to partner with the Pelicans on this deal. We MUST address our playmaking and PNR defense plus we are thin on the front court. Simmons can hit all of those areas that we need help with.

You know Thad was part of the DDR sign and trade right?

They won't void the Ball sign and trade.

Have the Derozen, Caruso, Bradley deals finalized yet?

Started off trying to be optimistic about this. Feeling less so. Please don't void this.

It's not going to be voided.
