Nets Summer League Begins Today

Jordan Ott & Amare will be head coaches

“Cam, his ability to create his own shot is evident at this level. He’s crafty, he’s got a bunch of fakes, he’ll be able to draw fouls,” Nets summer league coach Jordan Ott told The Post. “Obviously a really good aggressive scorer. You’re able to see it more and more each day. He’s started to feel more comfortable every day.”

“At 19 years old, you can score the basketball like that, being that skilled you can tell he’s put some time in the gym. He’s business,” said Ott. “He’s more of a quiet personality; but that’s because he’s here for basketball.”

“He’s very engaging, asked great questions, very curious on what we do in Brooklyn. … He’s here for the right reasons and you can tell right away.”

Brandon Knight will be on the Nets Summer League squad

At 29 with eight pro seasons under his belt, Knight has been passing that experience on to Thomas. He’s also suitably impressed with the rookie’s scoring touch.

“Cam, you know he can score even in this setting. You know he can score always,” Knight said. “Cam hit me with some questions, too; so that was good. I’m going to talk to him for a little bit. … I want to make these kids better. I want to help them be better.”

Jordan Ott on Day’Ron Sharpe

“Day’Ron’s physicality on both sides of the glass [is showing]. So offensively and defensive glass, you can feel it right away,” Nets summer league coach Jordan Ott told The Post. “He’s strong, aggressive, you can see his motor. So that piece is going to stick instantly, right now with us in summer league. We’re going to be able to feel him. So every day, they’re going to try to get better.”

“We switch everything 1-through-5. I’ve been trying to [show] I’ll be working on it, showing I could defend outside a little bit, as much as I can,” Sharpe told The Post. “So it’s been a little hard, though. So I’m just getting here, trying to get used to the speed of things.”

Ah yes, the "Glorified YMCA pickup league" annual thread.

Where Knee-jerk reactions and hot takes are at their absolute apex. Watch Chris McCullough be "the next t-mac" after scoring 22 points on the "blue" spurs summer league squaud which starts a 6'4" center. Watch legends such as Zoran Plananic be "a cant miss mini toni kukuc".

The place were Cliff Alexander "not only has a chance to make the roster, but i can see him starting and challenging for rookie of the year"

This thread is always my undoing... i say im going to ignore it but my fat lazy american brain has to come here and go 10 pages on why Cam Thomas isnt going to play big backup minutes based off of a 20 point debut where he goes 4-4 from three.

@Paradise, no disrespect on you. We need this thread and thanks for always making these ones and being on top of things. This one just triggers me every year.

Summer league isn't a bad thing. It's good to see what our rookies can do. I just think that there shouldn't be any judgements made, good or bad, about what we see from them because we know that none of this stuff will necessarily translate to the NBA floor. What will matter most for rookies is them working hard to earn themselves actual live NBA reps, which means putting in work behind the scenes and doing enough to impress the coaching staff to be given an opportunity.

I remember when Damion James, who was drafted fin 2010, looked like a solid 3 + D forward in summer league...and then he went on to average 4 points a game in only 32 games before the Nets decided to part ways. So yeah, we can get excited if Cam goes off tonight or Dayron hauls in a mean double double, but nothing matters until we see them get the reps against actual NBA teams.

To me, the guy who has a legit chance of pushing for time is Dayron, since he actually fills a pressing need for rebounding and rim defense. So I'll be keeping an eye out for him.

Yeah, its more about who is worth keeping in the pipeline then it is how the guys who we know will be on the NBA team look... good or bad.

Like Eddie Murphy once said....'When your really really hungry and someone gives you a cracker' ....part of you thinks that cracker is the most delicious thing you ever had, and the other half knows its just a cracker. Same thing with the summer league.

I'm actually thinking with the zillion rookies we got this should be fun to watch.

David Duke Jr signed yesterday. So he'll probably be around for training camp as well.

I always try not to get overly excited for SL since you can't really read too much into the performances, but I just can't help myself lol. I'm really interested in seeing what the second rounders + Duke Jr. can do.

Yeah, especially with no other basketball going on.

But honestly, summer league is a step down from the competition these guys saw in college. a pretty big step. with no coaching, no players, no intensity and a bunch of guys chucking and not sharing the ball trying to rack up number to stikc on with a team. its the worst.

I don't know who is who, all I see is Sharpe, Alize and Perry. ESPN are barely talking about our rookies
