Well, they do have confidence in these guys.

We agreed to a longer than typical deal with Mann too, but IIRC it was after Summer League when he first showed his mojo.

EDIT- It was a 4 year/$6.3M deal with team options on last 2 years, signed after Summer League.

I think we'll see the more complete version of Luke this year. He looked extremely timid, knowing he could get benched for a month at any second.

I think this is the first year for Luke's contract? 3/$41.2M is not as bad as the topline numbers originally announced given $8M is in incentives. I mean if the incentives are based on relatively high targets, then pretty sure the Clippers would be happy to have Kennard actually hit them and earn the extra dough.

He was more assertive in the playoffs, so I would think that should translate into the regular season this year. Start with a green light attitude on 3's, and then hopefully expand from there (some). If he plays well then I think he becomes a somewhat positive trade asset, where we might find a good trade that improves player fit on both teams.

The deal makes a little more sense to me in hindsight- whether it's Kennard, Mann, or the new rookies our goal is cost containment and not to lose guys early after a breakout season. When you do that you have to trust your player assessment and accept the risk of having some guys not live up to those contracts. As a cap-constrained team, it's not going to prevent us from signing significant FA's but can cost Ballmer some extra luxury tax, and he's obviously agreed to this strategy. I think as a whole it is a good one for us.

We now have Mann locked up for another 2 years, and maybe can leverage that into another cost-controlled early extension.

Reggie, Bev, Kennard, Rondo, Keon Johnson, Yogi Ferrell, Terance Mann, BJ Boston, Jay Scrubb, Amir Coffey. That's 10 guards.
I don't think there will be a trade, I think we just cut Ferrell, Scrubb and Coffey. and maybe trade Rondo's contract before the deadline.

Our roster would be:
Reggie Jackson
Nicolas Batum
Kawhi Leonard
Paul George
Marcus Morris
Luke Kennard
Pat Beverley
Serge Ibaka
Rajon Rondo
Ivica Zubac
Justise Winslow
Keon Johnson
Terance Mann
BJ Boston
15th spot goes to either Oturu if he does well in the summer league or we sign another back-up big, probably a veteran.

No need to cut Scrubb because he’s on a 2 way contact. You can have two of those.

I’ll be surprised if we’re carrying 10 guards. That’s excessive.

Clippers "in" on a P Siakam trade?

(Can't imagine what we could offer... Mann, Kennard, Rondo's contract and Ibaka or Zu?)

I think it’s because of the 3rd year but someone with more knowledge would have to answer this.

Rookies drafted in round 2 are available to sign for 2 years at the rookie minimum. Anything longer, or more lucrative than that, needs to come from cap space or a salary cap exception.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

Here's a pretty long bio vid on BJ, seems like a genuinely good kid who will work hard on his game-

No way I see Scrubb getting cut. He also defends and rebounds

He's still only 23 as a 2017 draftee... worth a shot? Buried behind a bunch of bigs at Cleveland last season

I’d rather have Noah Vonleh—who’s also working out for some teams—than Hartenstein. Vonleh can play at PF and spreads the court better. I honestly don’t know what happened to him. He was on a terrible 2019 Knicks team, but played well—and was a legit mid-level roster player for several years in Portland before that. Hasn’t really seen the court during the COVID period. He’s only 26 (actually, 25 as I type this). He’d be a nice minimum salary pickup.

Vonleh would probably school Hartenstein 1-on-1 8 times out of 10, but:

Hartenstein is younger and grew up in a basketball outpost, he may not be done developing? And "true" C seems like much more of a roster need... I think we'll see Batum, Morris, Ibaka, Winslow, Coffey (?) and maybe Boston all log minutes at fake-PF this year, but not sure how many guys we got beyond Zu, Ibaka and maybe Morris can play fake-Center.

From the looks of things, Vonleh was awful in Minnesota after his stint on the Knicks. Most notably, he went from shooting 33% from three with the Knicks to 14.3% with the Wolves. Then he got traded to Denver and failed to make a case for any real playing time there. Then he basically lost his chance at a bounce-back season in 2020-21 by getting COVID. Not very surprising that he's not getting much interest around the league.

I'd rather take a chance on Hartenstein. This season is going to be about youth and development. Hartenstein is younger and has more potential.

Hartenstein and two future Cleveland second-rounders were ultimately traded to Cleveland for an upgrade at the reserve center position in JaVale McGee.

Hartenstein declined a minimum-salary player option earlier this offseason.

Trad 5s ain't worth jackspit these days. Drummond just signed for the minimum, ffs. Makes you wonder what Zu's trade value really is.

Not sure where else to stick this stuff.

Looks like Boston is working out/playing pick up games with Ja Morant (his hops are ridiculous).

Drummond is a worse player and a head case that won’t buy into a role. I don’t know why you keep pushing this but Drummond has no connection to a player like Zubac.

For the clippers they should target Hartenstein or Giles for upside.

The league disagrees since both remain unsigned. Drummond isn't as bad as you think and Zubac is probably not nearly as good. I love the big lug but we gotta be real too.

Rondo has been bought out and expected to sign with the Lakers. Watch him go back to producing for them.
