Grimes hasn't looked that great. It's concerning he doesn't have all that much handle and, for a guy who looked athletic in HS hightlight videos, doesn't look all that athletic. The shot isn't falling either, all that well, but the form is there.
So yeah, for the highest of the Knicks picks, a guy a little older, want to see more; come out of the gate like McBride did.
Here's the HOPE - none, some or all of which might happen.
He was a 5 star prospect going to Kansas, flamed out, and then somehow rebuilt his game and/or confidence and was a very good, winning player on Houston.
Maybe, within the context of what he'll be - and let's not ever expect he was going to be anything other than a maybe 15-20 mpg off the bench, tops - is that playing with confidence is important to his game (what player isn't it important to) but that it takes a while for that adjustment when he transitions a level.
And with that, since he's apparently smart and self aware enough, he tweaks his game to fit what works at that level, his confidence rises and he looks decent
So, for an "NBA ready" player, it might take Grimes a minute. Like all of training camp or part of the season. Hell, it could take all year and NEXT year he's the player the Knicks thought they drafted.
These are just possibilities/thoughts. I don't care if he does well or not. Meaning, I'm not invested in how he turns out based on some other guy the Knicks should have drafted so I'll bash him all year long, nor that I zeroed in on him in the draft hoping the Knicks would get him.
Generally, when phrases like "he'll look better with real NBA players" and even this stuff, a variation on "he needs some time to develop" come out, 99% of the time you know you have a bust/not that good a player/disappointment on your hands.
But, there's a chance maybe those reasons are holding him back a bit - the adjustment/confidence thing.
Who knows
Hope he gets it together.
Once RJ goes out in that trade, Knicks going to need a little guard/wing depth, don't really want large helping of Bacon.
It’s Summer League.
Knox dominated Summer League and is a terrible NBA player.
that just makes it seem even worse for grimes

Some of these guys (Selden, Travis), mostly just look bad. Sims is a developmental league keeper, at least for now.
Why trash? He'b been playing well and what more do you want from a developmental piece. He'll be 3rd on the depth chart and working with Kenny Payne all season, plus he's madd athletic with some nice upside moves.
"trash" smh

Re: Summer League Gm 3: Knicks vs Lakers 10PM EST
Folks using the "Knox dominated in SL" rationalization still don't realize that doesn't mean jack for Grimes as it's a converse argument.
IF the argument was that "Grimes will be GOAT cause he's dominating SL" THEN the "Knox dominated SL" argument would very much apply. Does not apply unless you're not only very loose with your vowels but also very loose with your bowels.
Yes he could STILL turn into something but nothing about anything he's done in 3 SL games says he's even an NBA level rotation player. And it's not been just the 3 games that I'm basing my opinion on, I've said all along that I didn't think Grimes was all that good and wasn't worth picking in the 1st round. Well before SL.
In fact the "Knox dominated in SL" argument works against NOT for Grimes. Why? Cause if even if a puss like Knox can dominate then SL must be easy. And if it's easy what is wrong with Grimes becomes an even bigger concern? And yeah I would love to be wrong (as long as Grimes career with the Knicks continues).
So please stop with the "Knox dominated in SL" excuse.

I think the point they're trying to make with that statement is that summer league performances are completely meaningless, but that argument would be better supported with examples of players who looked really bad in summer league but turned into good players, and bonus points if that guy was coming out of 3 years of college, is at least 21 y/o, and supposed to be NBA ready.

"in my feelings"?

I'm not a Sims fan, don't even know the kid. But he has smooth moves and jumps out the gym. He's not Embiid or Ayton but he can be a nice piece as a 3rd string center.

Re: Summer League Gm 3: Knicks vs Lakers 10PM EST
Late game plus an early commute to work means I couldn't write out a recap. But some quick thoughts:
IQ - Just out there looking like a man amongst rookies. He made some really nice reads and passes, but his feel at PG is still a work in progress. There's room for a lot of growth in terms of feel and pace, but he also will do some things like the baseline drive where he found Deuce wide open on the baseline behind him that let you know...kid could really develop into more than just a scoring guard with a sixth man upside.
Obi - Also in man amongst rooks mode...but for someone with so much athleticism, he played a little to finesse for my taste. His best moments were powering through or speeding by guys and some of his best summer league highlights are where he misses the initial lay-up but bodies guys on the drives and has free putbacks after.
Deuce - Thibs is gonna find minutes for this kid if he keeps it up. He'll be the reason Kemba and Rose's health can hold up and they can be well-rested. The defensive highlights are my favorite part but the three balls were cold-blooded.
Grimes - His defense is getting overshadowed by McBride. But Grimes is doing a lot of the little stuff really well. He's a great rebounder, aggressive defender (though the aggression gets him in trouble at times), and his shot selection is good even if it's not falling. His inability to get any separation off the dribble against Summer League guys...a little scary. But I think the shot starting to fall would help change that equation a bit, so I'm still hopeful. Even at worst, he's projecting as a three and D glue kinda guy.
Rokas - Getting more and more comfortable with minutes. I loved when IQ told him to cut through and he hit the trey on the baseline. He needs seasoning, but I see why he was a top-40 mocked player.
Sims - Bad game. He finally looked like a rookie from the fouls to struggling on the glass. The good news is that even when he's off his game, our squad is exponentially better with him as an inside threat. It might just be the halo effect of having Reid Travis back him up...so yeah, the G-league will probably be good for him to get needed reps and development before we start talking about Mitch or Noel trades.
Travis - My least favorite Summer League Player. Is Justin Patton hurt? I'd rather watch him back-up Sims.
Selden - I thought he'd be my least favorite Summer League Player..but he's stepped it up and is my second-least favorite instead.

Hoping Thibs smells the coffee and keeps Rose and Kemba on a 25 minute cap and spreads those minutes around. We’ll be more dangerous with this backcourt depth if Thibs doesn’t burn everyone out. Yo Thibs! You can finally expand your rotation!
Bwahahaha never!
IQ and McBride will watch from the bench as Kemba and Rose burn out what’s left of their knees and you’ll love it.
