2021 Summer League

Post#1 » by VCfor3 » Wed Aug 4, 2021 1:07 am

Grizz get the win against one of Utah's teams.
-Bane looked great tonight which is both a good sign and expected given the competition.
-Tillman looked ok. Kinda looked the same as last season to me. Maybe a little rusty shooting but nothing I'm worried about.
-Konchar is his same all-around solid self
-Pons looked great tonight. Hit both of his 3pt attempts (wide wide open) and made athletic plays. Solid defense. I'm still guessing he gets a two-way from us.
-Weems was going off and shooting the lights out of the gym. We gave him an Exhibit 10 deal, but I think we give him Sean's two-way spot soon

Pons checks a lot of the boxes for us. Hope he is a keeper.

We should certainly keep both Pons and Weems (who really looks like a steal) and waive McDermott.

Konchar looks improved, Bane lost some weight, and Tillman is totally fine.

Looking at Kemba`s move, I wonder whether Bledsoe is willing to agree to something similar?

Maybe. I think he'll give back less though than whatever Kemba is giving back prior to signing a vet min deal with LAL or PHI.

Early on, as expected, our guys are purely development prospects at this point. Would like to see Santi get a lot more time.

Ziaire has made some basic reads, but the unorthodox shooting form needs tweaking. I'm still upset we passed on Sengun.

Yeah I see the appeal of Ziaire and am okay with taking a swing on him. Santi I wasn't impressed with at all but he is a project. How he looks in a year or two is what is important. Same applies to Ziaire. Neither have to be studs by then, but they have to be making progress and be starting to put some things together.

Big loss here. Strus torched the nets and Bane got exposed a bit as a playmaker. I don't think the playmaking is going to carry over next year even if he handles the ball a lot more.

Ziaire looked good today because he knocked down shots. His moves were solid and he was active off ball cutting. To clarify, I don't hate him as a prospect, but saw a lot of top level talent on the board. We will probably kick ourselves for missing Sengun, but at least we didn't draft Wagner/Primo.

Santi is not a good enough shooter at the moment. Right now he is a 6'11 ball of clay with a good ball skills and elite fluidity. He needs to develop more team chemistry and be more active in pick and roll. He is still very young and will have to adjust to the speed of the game.

McDermott looked outstanding today and was super aggressive attacking the rim. We should hold on to him.

ZW is real. That’s the main takeaway that is making all the other just insignificant.

PS Konchar is perfect. Tillie is following his path.

With Whole Truth`s unfortunate departure, this section doesn`t look very alive.

ZW looked a lot better this game. Was happy we got to see his shot falling. I can't wait to see how he progresses this year.

Santi has not impressed so far. Again he is a project who has not played against players even close to this caliber so he needs to adjust, but shooting like 12% from the field so far is less than ideal.

Konch is so much fun. Great guy to have as a 5th guard type.

Tillie has been fun as well in large part due to his shooting. Tillie also has officially signed a two-way deal.

I think Pons and Sean are battling it out for the second two-way and I'm leaning Pons.

Santi needs to refine his shooting form. The size- fluidity combination is only relevant if he is facing up and driving the rim. The floor needs to be appropriately spaced for this to happen.

Let's see how Ziaire plays through the rest of summer league. So far, he has had one bad and one good game.

Given how his season went and all, I think I care more about flashes of good than I do any stretches of bad for summer league with him. Time with the coaches can fix a lot of problems and hopefully help stabilize the good so I'm just trying to see what the best version of him may ultimately look like. I also am the farthest thing from a scout so can't critique the small stuff/most stuff anyway lol. I leave that to you. :D

Also Ziaire did an interview with the Chris Vernon Show if anyone wants to watch:

I watched this interview. This kid as smart, as special, as talented. I am completely and utterly sold on him.

Thanks for posting it. I don't know if you are the furthest thing from a scout. Your eye test seems pretty solid/based. I also agree with both of you on the interview - this is the side of the game I don't get watching pure film. He seems like a good kid with a good head on his shoulders.

I am not backing off my assessment of the pick because of the timing and situation we are currently in - looking to make a run in the playoffs - but I am hopeful that he can crack our rotation in a year or so. Alpe still looks like a huge miss - not just for us, but for a ton of teams.

That said, Williams has really good fluidity and he was adept moving without the ball last game, which is what helped him to get into a rhythm. His shooting form is still a bit odd (like JJJ's), but hopefully he is a better shooter than his Stanford numbers suggested (and he doesn't mean regress). I wonder how much bulking up will impact his shot/cutting, as this is definitely an underrated factor. Probably next summer he should work on his body and simultaneously modify his shot. They said on the telecast or this interview that he is on a 5,000 calorie per day diet, so that should help. Will this slow him down, or will he maintain the same burst? I think it all depends on his workout regiment. I imagine that it is really a difficult thing to balance - getting in reps to bulk up, while also hoping that it doesn't impact your shot as much (as a projected shooter). Ziaire also made a lot of the right plays moving the ball and was unselfish in that last contest. Defensively, strength is going to continue to be an issue.

Ziare has revealed so far quite a few elite natural BBIQ instincts you cannot coach or develop. Some call it “feel for the game”.

Alpe has been awesome so far in summer league. Have really enjoyed watching him. I think Houston had a fantastic draft this year.

And I agree ESVL that Ziaire has had a few plays that showed some solid BBIQ. I like the way he boxes out more often than not (he still is figuring it out ha). I also agree with an earlier assessment of he looks kind of like a kid out there.

Really frustrated to see Louis King ball out again.....think he is a keeper. Possibly a rotation guy for them now.

The update on my other in season pickup candidate, Myles Powell, is a complete mystery. The latest news on him has him suing Seton Hall because of medical negligence. It seems a nagging knee injury may have cut his career short, unfortunately. He did not play summer league.
