Re: Summer League 2021
Brandon Boston is looking like a steal at 51. It's fun to watch his improvement each game. He's got surprisingly good handles and was in the passing lane with those long arms. He needs to get in the weight room but looking forward to seeing how he develops. Maybe he's still growing and can play some 4 down the road.
Preston had his best game. Showed an aggressiveness that was missing the first 2 games. He can get to his floater almost at will but tried to pass a couple too many times. Nice little cross-over up and under and 1, but FTs were bad.
FTs were bad for the entire team, hope they do a ton of FT practice before the Jazz game on Sun.
Still waiting for Keon to realize he needs to focus on his midrange. He keeps trying to shoot threes or attack when 2-3 defenders are on him. He needs to come off screens for a mid-range, or post up when he's got a single defender and hit that turnaround mid-range. Hoping to see some of that vs the Jazz.
Outside of game two, it's been an entertaining Summer League.

Fingers crossed that Keon pans out, because Bones Hyland is having a pretty nice SL, and would've been available without having to trade up. We had him in a workout, so he must've been on our short list. I'd hate to see the Nuggets pull another MPJ on us.

What you're looking for is alpha talent. The ability not just to dominate the opps but to dominate your OWN team so they trust you with the ball and make the right decision to shoot or pass. Stand up or stand down.
Watched Reggie Bullock in Summer League when Doc drafted him. Didn't think much of him but he was still clearly one of the best on the court. I was not surprised he became a marginal NBA starter. WAY too late to help Lob City though.

I’m not worried about Johnson at all. He’s got the mental and physical tools to be a star (maybe more) in this league. And he’s only 19.
I see him on a similar diet that the Spurs put Leonard on. First year focus on defense, rebounding, energy. Second year added the corner 3 ball. Third year 3 ball from all around. Forth year started adding in the mid range game and the rest is history. From the get go Pop had him watching tape of Kobe, MJ, and Barkley too.
Leonard needed to tweak his shot mechanics. Johnson has a leg up there as he’s got a nice shot. It’s up to him to be consistent and work from all areas.
He said he models his game after Leonard so he landed in the right situation to improve. Hopefully he’s watching tape, gets in the gym after SL, and soak up whatever Leonard offers.

Re: Summer League 2021
Boston looks way better than I expected. I figured he'd be a longterm project spending the season in the D-League. But if his corner three is for real, I think he has to get some minutes in the big leagues this year.

Re: Summer League 2021
Johnson is a ball of energy. Great defensive instincts. Just had a an incredible block on Azuibuke. Hit a nice mid range shot and long ball too.
Preston has a sweet floater. I’m in love. When he’s aggressive he’s a different player. He’s better on defense than I was led to believe. Yeah, it’s SL but I’m less worried about that than I was before. His court vision is beautiful.
Boston will get minutes. He has great control and such sneaky length.
Coffey much better but still lacking something.
Oturu continues to get better but he still seems slow in situations.
Fun game. They look the most comfortable they’ve played to date.

Coffey with the game we knew he was capable of finally. Unless there’s a trade though there is no room for him here.
Scrubb has cooled off but he’s staying engaged defensively.
Still like Hicks. Is he eligible for a 2 way contract?

I feel like the Clippers must have drafted Preston knowing his strengths (vision and passing) and weaknesses (athleticism, creating.) If he can just not be a sieve on defense, he might be able to play with the right unit around him. He'll mainly focus on setting up teammates, and knock down open jumpers and 3's to keep defenses honest. We ended up with 2 athletes in Boston and Johnson, and one cerebral point guard in Preston, which I think is a good mix.
Boston has been surprisingly good, considering he was in over his head last season. But realistically not every kid is ready to start right away especially at a major college. At a different school he might have come off the bench and gotten a chance to get comfortable, and then maybe fulfill his expectations as a 2nd year player. That could have still landed him in the lottery.
I think raw athletes can get minutes in the NBA, if they focus on defense, hustle, rebounds. Don't try to do too much otherwise (which leads to mistakes), take what's there (transition, broken plays, etc.) and your energy can give this Clipper team a boost. It will be interesting to see if Boston or Johnson can fill that role this season, even if in limited minutes.

Re: Summer League 2021
Most complete game the team has played. Fizzled in the 4th a bit but earned a solid win.
You can see why the team has high hopes/confidence in Johnson, Boston, and Preston. Going to be fun watching these 3 grow together.

Re: Summer League 2021
The rooks have looked much better in these last two games. Preston is finally getting more aggressive. Keon seems to have finally found his game. Boston's jumper might be legit. Scrubb's shooting has cooled off but still looks solid. Everybody is ripping Oturu but he's been solid- not sure of his status on the team. Coffey finally had a good game. Its kind of odd that this summer league has hurt him. Its almost as if he shouldn't have played

In the headhunting business we always joked that in the end every decisionmaker hires himself. Elgin kept drafting bigs, especially forwards [6-7 or more] like himself...
Reggie Williams
Joe Wolf
Ken Norman
Danny Manning
Charles Smith [draft night trade for Hersey Hawkins]
Danny Ferry
Loy Vaught
LeRon Ellis
Elmore Spencer
Lamond Murray
Lorenzen Wright
"Maximum" Mo Taylor
Odom [ok, that was a gimme]
Darius Miles
Tyson Chandler [traded for Elton Brand
]Chris Wilcox [#8] and Melvin Ely [#12] ONE OF THE WORST DRAFTS IN NBA HISTORY
Al Thornton
Now it looks like were drafting Jerry West [6-2 to 6-5] over and over, looking for the next SGA...?

Re: Summer League 2021
I was happy with all 3 rookies. They showed why the FO is so high on them.
Boston has a complete package. It’s just about honing it all now. Only 19. Whew.
Preston is another player when he’s attacking. Showed off some flash passing too. The floater is sweet and has craftiness around the basket. Defense better than advertised.
Johnson does a lot of the right things but wasn’t paying off for him. That’ll come. His instincts on defense, position for put backs, and overall awareness will serve him well. Has a pretty shot too.
Hope Roach finds a spot on someone’s roster. He showed skill.
