Much like when FF7R came out, I am so happy I could cry. This is one of the games of my childhood. Only had time to start up a character and momentarily **** around, but will get in as much time as I can this weekend (which is probably, unfortunately, just a little).

Not that you had much time, but good early impressions?

It's great. The ability to completely change builds on the fly is kinda wild. The difference in play styles really is stark. I struggled with a boss for a while, changed literally everything up, and had no problems with it.

A small thing I especially appreciate is you start with no map in an area. Then you unlock the map. But all the while the mini-map shows literal footsteps of where you've traveled. The boss arena where I had problems for a dozen times is littered with hundreds of tiny dots. It's cool, and useful for knowing where you've been and where you haven't.

I'm a huge Souls guy and have always seen this on sale and recommended but never pulled the trigger because it seemed kinda anime-ish which isn't my thing.

You're kind of tempting me though.

I'm super not into anime-anything. I bounced off Scarlet Nexus pretty hard because that was loaded with anime bullsh*t. Code vein has an anime visual style, but I don't think the story is all that anime, at least so far. I'm about 20-25% of the way through I think.

If I have one gripe, I think I stumbled onto the two best weapons in the game and it's made experimenting with the large number of classes and gear kinda pointless. I have a monster two hand weapon I use for just about everything, and a one hander I switch to if I know I'm gonna need something for mobility (which has been rare).

ETA: Yea, I jumped the gun. Ran into a boss that laughed at my style of play. It's forced me to to do a deeper dive on the various Blood Codes (classes you unlock along the way) and their unique perks/abilities. I'm going back to my previously cleared areas to hunt down items I missed that would have me better equipped if I need to play as, like, a castor or marksman.

The lightbulb going on above my head was me realizing what the developers were going for.

It's "I'm skirting my responsibilities to pack (context: I'm moving) to sneak-in time to play away from my partner's knowledge" good. Apparently I have more things in my office than I realized... :D

For real, it's very good so far. The updated graphics and the interface are great; skill effects look beautiful. This is such a wonderful pace of play, too, compared to what I've grown to find bothersome about POE. And I always knew that - I think I last played D2, with mods, maybe 2 years ago? I may have dabbled in it at the beginning of the pandemic, too. But it's really hitting me now how much I've looked forward to this.

The QOL updates are very nice so far. Walking over gold to pick it up makes such a difference compared to playing the OG. But they've clearly respected other areas to not bastardize the game.

As far as bugs so far, have found very little. I think chat is broken which doesn't bother me at all. There was one door that didn't visually open for me, but I was still able to walk through it. But that's it.

Been farming the countess to get runes. Building a frozen orb sorc now - my favorite skill - but if I have time this weekend or next I might try a fire druid. May not get there. After having a taste, it's brutal the full game is still a month out.

Seriously, thanks much for the in depth explanation. I think that's all very interesting. I don't know how I'm gonna feel about the endgame, but I am anxious to check it out.

Slight correction here. I forgot they had introduced one respec per difficultly level, which you can take at any time. So each character gets 3 respecs in total if you take them through to the end. This is helpful as, while leveling, some skills are better than others of course. But nothing is preventing you from saving them to totally switch builds in end game if you wish.

Got any Warhammer II tips? Or Total War tips in general? I was talking about getting into Warhammer II a few pages back, was enjoying myself until I moved. Simply haven’t dipped back into it after having my stuff in boxes for a few weeks.

This is a pretty good guide on some of the more basic stuff, also make sure to check out this https://total-war-warhammer-2.fandom.com/wiki/Campaign_controls as with many rts games hotkeys are a giant help some of the more important ones I'll just quote below.

Create/Select unit group 10 – Ctrl + 1, 2, 3, etc (pressing the number assigned to a group will do a quick pane to that group)
Show Unit Orders – Space
Toggle Locked Group – Ctrl + G (if you want to move a formation as you have it set up) (can also use right click-alt to accomplish this without locking a group)
f - toggles melee/ranged

TLDW would be

-Make sure to spread infantry/archers/siege equipment to the maximum width (hold right click and drag)

-Powder units can usually not shoot from behind an infantry line so have to be a bit more tactical with how you deploy them, potentially on the edges of the formation or have them in the front of the infantry lines (skirmish setting is okay for this but i dont recommend it for main army. Skirmish is good if you want to use like skirmish cav and not pay attention to it).

-I'd recommend starting with a normal/normal campaign just so you don't need to go into the cheese stuff that you need to use in higher difficulties

-Magic is super strong, generally the most powerful spells are AOE spells and healing.

-Pick whatever faction looks the most fun to you they all have unique playstyles and you'll have tons of fun (the only ones I probably wouldnt rec on a vanilla campaign is Chaos or Norsca as they are both really old and haven't had an update yet.

DLC's are very worth it but if you're like me and hate paying for DLC then just send me a dm I can help you with that lol. Mod community is huge and amazing. Definitely look into it I can give you some of my recommend mods after you've got a campaign or two under your belt.

F*cking autosaves. Not happy that I got to a pivot point in Code Vein that would determine if I'd get the good ending or not, and apparently I won't. I thought I had done all the required things prior, but apparently not, and I can't go back and reload. I like this game enough to do multiple play throughs, but this really sucks.

So... is Cyberpunk worth the $10 Best Buy is peddling it for? I have a PS5, maybe that's a less **** experience?

It is definitely worth 10 dollars. That price is insane and kind of sad. You will be fine on a PS5. I didn’t love the game, but it’s worth a shot at that price. I might give it another try if they ever do a proper next gen upgrade.

I really liked CP2077, definitely worth the $10 sale price.

2077 is probably a great time for $10. You might even hold it in higher regard than others because you escaped the hype machine and got it for cheap.

The problem with 2077 is it never should have been released on the PS4. The launch version on PS5 was not only playable but it was spectacular. I don't remember any weird visual glitches, though there probably were some. The big issue I had was hard crashes every few hours. Happened regularly. It was annoying, but the load speeds and generous autosave spots meant it was never a big deal.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I went ahead and ordered it. I’m optimistic, but if it sucks I’ve wasted a hell of a lot more money on much stupider things before so :dontknow:

Update.

So now I'm about 65% through the game if you go by area cleared, gear, and sidequests. I love this game, a lot. To me it's a nice middle point between DS and the relatively easy path it is to builds, and Nioh where there's a staggering, throw your controller amount thrown at you.

I like that the items and abilities you acquire aren't cloaked in lore. "This is a passive. Use it to boost Strength and Vitality."

Again, can't say enough about the ability to change builds whenever you want. I'm running an Atlas build right now. It has four passive slots, four gear slots, eight ability slots (like every build). If I switch to a Queenslayer build, I modify all 16 slots, but it remembers the build if I want to switch back to Atlas. It's sooooo nice.

Still loving my heavy strength build, but it's nice being able to master abilities from other builds and bring them into my current setup. Was having a little trouble in an ice dungeon, mastered some fire abilities, and made quick work of the boss.

QuakeCon starts today and there’s a lot of internet noise that they might announce a new Quake game that gets the Doom 2016/Wolfenstein: The New Order single player revival treatment. I kind of feel like I have less nostalgia for Quake than I do Doom/Wolfenstein, maybe because I only remember doing very little Quake III Arena at a friend’s house once. Hell, I don’t even know what Quake’s premise even is other than “shoot stuff.” Anyone a Quake diehard getting excited?
