Re: 2022 NBA Draft
Went back and rewatched some Chet from the U19s. Came back with a new appreciation for what his ceiling is. Handles in pnr settings. Able to make some incredible reads as a passer. Covers so much ground in his strides. Moves like a wing. I think he's my default #1 right now until the season is underway.

I haven't seen much written about his defense but the Randle comparison kind of scares me a bit. What kind of player does that make him at the next level if he's not great defensively and not a Barkley-esque power dribbler? First year in Detroit Blake Griffin maybe? Still need to watch more of him in a fixed traditional camera angle.
well, not like Randle is some chop liver, my man got some MVP votes this year, made all-star team, averaged 24/10/6, and Banchero is ahead of the developmental curve than Randle was at the same stage...Randle imo is kinda like median-ish type of outcome for him which is well worth a top pick if you feel like he can easily reach that level and earlier than Randle did.
but yea, thats why I said it'll be big for his prospects if he can prove he can play some small ball 5 in the league, because he's not really gonna slide down to the 3 in any scalable way, so he's gonna have to be able to play some 5 otherwise he'll be pigeon holed @ the 4 just like Randle and it'll limit his ceiling a bit.

Man I instantly thought of that when watching him. That would be a hell of a player though if healthy. I loved that version of Blake with the versatility he had and wished he was just young with some healthy knees.

Honestly that kind of player would be a ton of fun on the current Pistons.
Hayes/Cunningham/Bey/Banchero/Stewart would be a heck of a young core, or Cunningham/Bey/Grant/Banchero/Stewart, but I'm feeling like Hayes will be much better this year.

I don't think Randle is a bum or anything but I think he got a little exposed in the playoffs and I worry about him a bit in those playoff/high leverage situations where he has to either create or get a stop in those moments. Don't wanna get too off topic though because he and Banchero are different players and I've seen very little Banchero comparatively. The optics given Banchero size and fluidity make me think he could probably play 4 or 5 but I tend to think almost any player 6'8" or taller can play at least SOME minutes at the 5.

Oh yeah I meant that comparison as complementary. Trying to visualize Banchero flourishing as the less explosive/more cerebral version of Blake.

Chet is less switchy but better weak side rim protection, think they both process the game really well, Mobley is probably better passing from set spots like high post or off doubles, but think Chet has more live dribble passing to his game. Think chets shot creation and shooting is much further along then where Mobley was at. Mobley more athletic.
If you just don't trust Chets frame then yeah fair enough, but not like Mobley doesn't have a ways to go there himself
that's kinda a strawman...who's saying Mobley is "such a better prospect" than Chet? Chet is slated to go top 2 at worst at this point, and is a great prospect in his own right.
also the frame talk on Mobley is completely exaggerated but that's a diff discussion.
Mobley is a fantastic athlete for a big man. Is Chet? I’m not sure. He doesn’t seem fast, explosive, or strong enough to hold ground and handle contact.
Maybe I’m wrong, we’ll see against other athletes, but he looks slow-ish to me. His skillset is good and his length obviously, but I don’t think he covers ground or gets up anything like Mobley, and Mobley is thin as hell and probably has 25 pounds on Chet.

Chet is really one of a kind. The questions about his body are legit - as they were with Jokic - though obviously Jokic didn't have a problem with being so thin. I don't think there's ever been a 7 footer with the skills that Chet has. If I had to choose between Mobley and Chet, I'd go with the safer bet - Mobley - but... I think Chet has the higher ceiling, because my guess is that whoever picks Chet will likely build their team around him and try to make him their Jokic.

Re: 2022 NBA Draft
When it comes to Mobley vs. Chet (on offense) I'd say it comes down to the frequency of offensive brilliance. Chet's shot making/passing/self creation all are established parts of his game at this stage and not something nebulous. Mobley's brilliance in those areas is still often classified as "flashes" even though he is certainly a comfortable in other areas as a short roll passer and play finisher etc. They both have great feel but I think Chet's aggression on offense and overall repertoire lead me to believe he's just got more in his bag on that end of the floor. Going to echo the concerns about Chet's lack of strength however and Mobley's historically low foul rate for his elite rim defense is something to consider when comparing the two (though Chet is far from a slouch as a rim defender).

Pokusevski?
Body type is pretty much a match.
Poku has serious handles and sometimes special passing. He also showed some shooting in the greek league. The video of Poku doesn't look as impressive, but he was playing against a much higher level of competition (Greek 2nd div vs High school is a BIG difference, especially physically).

Well you have to take into consideration that Chet's body development will affect his shot/creation( he might be a solid case study on this). The lack of fluidity is a bit worrisome imo. My biggest gripe with Chet is his offense. I don't think he'll be hanlding the ball a lot or self creating shots otd. I have a much better time picturing what Paolo's or Mobley's offense would look like( high end outcome).

that's the part for me that i think would have to be the case to fully max out what Chet does. If not i wonder the fit.

Chet Holmgren reminds me of Michael Jordan.
There are very few players with his level of competitive nature.

Chet does low-key give me those Larry Legend vibes where he doesn't look like somebody that chirps all game but if you know you know.

i dont think that's true at all, at least to well enough for it to actually be a + for a team in terms of lineup versatility and scalability.
4s today need to be either one of two things:
1- athletic/mobile enough with the ball skills to slide down to the 3
2- have enough size/strength with enough rim protection to be able to slide up to the 5
i don't think Banchero will be #1, and it's a wait and see for #2...if he can convince me of #2 then he's a super stud prospect.
until then tho I have Chet #1.

I doubt he's good enough to be a primary playmaker. jokic is the best passer ever for a C. He's also an elite post player I have a hard time seeing Chet excel in that area with his frame and finishing problems

Yeah.. I do think we sometimes get caught up in the excitement of "Oh my God this dude is 7 feet tall and can run pick and roll" but don't stop to realize that doesn't really matter unless he's actually more effective at it than guards, which is a really high bar. Can't just be "great for a seven footer"

it can be very valuable if your guards can also play off of it...but if your guards are just on-ball dudes who can't play off-ball then yea, it doesn't matter.

Even then, if those guards are better at running things then off-ball, it diminishes the value of having the big do it because it's at the expense of those guards' game. I don't think it doesn't matter, it just is much less impactful and shouldn't hold as much weight as many (including myself sometimes) give it. Not saying Chet is a guy like that, just a general thought. His shooting may make him special initiating because it forces switches or both bigs (if it's a big/big pnr) to come all the way out to the three point line, but the lack of explosiveness may make it to where it doesn't make as much sense to have the ball in his hands
