Re: Our Boy Danny Green Got Married
What do you think poor people in Africa or some other country think of people here spending $1000+ on a frivolous thing such as an iPhone and then repeating it every few years?
It's all about perspective.

Gotta do it for the social cred.
Haters gonna hate. How about gotta do it to celebrate love with a great time with friends and family.
Also, not for nothing, the wedding industry got destroyed, all those people who were working got paid as well.

Setting your tax code is a fundamental right of any sovereign nation. Rich countries forcing smaller countries to amend their right to manage their tax to attract any type of citizenship they want is a modern bully tactic that shouldn't be accepted.
A group of tax lawyers in Brussels shouldn't be able to determine what Ireland sets as their tax code. You, as a global citizen, should have the right to choose any country you want to live in and be able to abide by that tax code.

Getting married is a foolish move with divorce laws as they are. And with how much money Danny prob has.

Well, this may have been a giant waste of money, but the divorce will cost him more.

When Danny Green spends an extravagant amount on a wedding, do you think the money disappears into thin air?
Or does it go to all the people involved - dozens of servers, caterers, performers, tailors and other event staff, etc. that maybe have seen their jobs disappear during COVID?

That was my first thought too, seeing the crowded dance floor sans masks, and the guests listening to Danny's speech.
What is the status of NBA protocols these days anyway? This past season no player could have attended a gathering like that.

I wasn't criticizing the jurisdiction, I was criticizing those, who benefit from the taxpayer, but refuse to be taxpayers.
Did the taxpayers in the Cayman Islands pay for American or Canadian basketball player's elementary schooling? Did they pay for the public infrastructure and security which allows people to travel to basketball games? Did they help subsidize the building of Arenas? No they did not.
People, who gain wealth partly due to the infrastructure and security paid for by tax dollars, have a debt to pay.

what the going rate for something like that or something even average?
Somewhere over $500k, under $1 mil.
A higher end wedding for a non multi-millionaire will cost close to $500 per head. Most in general are about $200 per head range.

Marriage agreements are a common thing nowadays.
I refused to get married without one.

This makes no sense. People spend a ridiculous amount of money even when they're not rich like these athletes. In Toronto, and certain communities, spending $100k-$200k for a middle class family wedding is very common.
Wedding companies even tell the public what percentage of a man's annual salary should go towards a wedding ring.
Green is probably spending a lower percentage of his salary than non celebrities do on theirs.

Agreed.
If you have the money and want to spend it, then do it if it makes you happy.
Other people struggling financially isn't a problem I can solve by not spending $200k on my wedding.

That is what local, municipal and excise taxes are for. That is also what payroll taxes are for. If a municipality doesn't want to build an arena, that's fine. Nobody complains when builders and developers pay millions in municipal development charges, hire thousands of people who remit payroll, etc. That money goes to paying for parks and roads.
The only issue is personal income tax based on your jurisdiction. Most of the personal income tax goes to the federal government not to local governments.
Having said that, if you are a resident of Canada you owe those taxes, if you are not, you pay the taxes of your chosen jurisdiction.
Some countries are willing to forego federal taxes to attract talent and investment.
Edit: that is also why perpetually increasing taxes on our most monetarily valuable citizens is catastrophic. A few years ago doctors were villanized and were no longer allowed to income split. Over the past decade we have lost some of our most talented young doctors to hospitals in the US. We are now going to face a doctor shortage and everyone is going to cry out and wonder why.

The solution is a tax treaty between nations.
Paying taxes isn't villanizing.
It's not that cities have the choice to build the Arena, it is that sports leagues blackmail cities by saying. "Pay for a new Arena or we'll move." City politicians who push back against the blackmail risk their political future if the team leaves. So they cave and the league laughs all the way to the bank.

People who think this is a lavish wedding with unnecessary spending have clearly never been to an Indian wedding.

Danny Green is no boy of mine. He came here in a trade, played terribly in the playoffs, and made fun of Canada the entire time. Then he left us to go to The Lakers when we were still a playoff team.
