Roberson with a good open field tackle behind the line and a pick 6. Wonder if he makes the team.

FWIW, keeping in mind its voted on by players, there are only two bears on the NFL top 100 list. Mack and AR. Neither were drafted by the team. One can argue the list shows you how many elite players we have. And says something about Pace. We dont have a first round pick next year. Even if fields blossoms, I suspect mediocrity for at least next three years, probably more. Where will we get difference makers from for the future? Mack is going to start declining soon, and AR may leave.

Chiefs have 5 on list. Buccaneers have 8 on list. Packers - 6. Bills - 4.

Dresden wrote:Nice play by both Fields and the receiver on that TD. But as someone else mentioned, this team doesn't really give off a vibe like it's going to be anything other than mediocre. The fact that they can't run the ball is worrisome. They were badly outgained in the half, and that's playing against Matt Barkley and someone even less talented. The offense only scored 1 TD, and that's not good. I don't see much better than a .500 season coming, if that. Of course this is still just preseason, and sometimes teams gel as the year goes on, so hopefully that will be the case here.

Well my goodness, I don’t know what the possession time battle specially was in the first half, but it wasn’t exactly pretty. The Bears were dominated in the trenches. Fields definitely wasn’t very comfortable in the pocket when he did drop back either.

field's last throw of the preseason will put a LOT of pressure on nagy to play him very soon. the fans will be looking for any excuse to boo dalton and the media won't be much more disciplined

and again, everything else pales in importance to fields looking like a franchise QB this preseason. will that translate to the regular season? dunno, but i don't see why not...beyond him getting dinged up early

If Dalton goes down in the first 4 games, I think it's 50/50 as to how the first quarterback off the bench will be- Fields or Foles.

What does Horsted have to do to make the team? Seems like almost every time he gets the slightest opportunity, all he does is make great catches for touchdowns. His blocking can’t be that bad. I gotta believe that he could contribute. The guy is a gamer.

"start dalton and give him a real short leash" seems like a reasonable approach to starting the season. like, "make a change at halftime of game one if the offense sputters"-level short leash.

dalton didn't look awful in the preseason, but the offense did. fields didn't look like a no-questions-asked starter, but he absolutely adds a dimension to the offense that dalton isn't capable of replicating. it's not implausible that dalton does fine to start the season, but if he doesn't, no need to waste the team's time going through the motions with him.

I'm predicting Nagy will call single coverage on Aaron Donald game 1 as a sacrifice to the football gods and then Fields will be in by the 2nd half.

I feel like he's safe, but who knows. Last time they took JP Holtz, a blocking TE, that turned out to be nothing special as a blocker. Dunno how you watch Horsted's game and say "Yeah let's take Holtz", but I won't pretend to know what's going on in the genius mind of Nagy.

Problem is vet Jesse James has looked great too. Pace made a mistake by keeping Graham around. Should have cut him and reinvested in Oline. Kmet James Horsted is a good TE room.

Dalton is a big dude that can take hits. Unless its a hand to helmet thing I think he will be healthy and not missing snaps.

The only thing that keeps Fields off the field is wins. We start out 0-2 and Fields is in.

He's a converted WR so yeah his blocking could be "that bad"

I don't have a scouting report on him but I'm guessing that's why he didn't make the roster last year because it's not like we had a stacked TE room.

The Bears will have to run the ball. A lot. Non-blocking TEs are going to need a lack of viable competition to make it. And they have Graham already.

I do understand Nagy may possibly not see it that way because he is Nagy.

Chris Simms discussing the rookie QB situations around the league. Talks about Bears starting around 7 minute mark:

Takeaways I got from this: Simms thinks Fields should start from Day One. He also thinks Matt Nagy's offensive scheme sucks and lacks creativity. He also says something I have said here about Fields- that if you have a bad O line, it would make more sense to start Fields over Dalton, because Justin can at least slow down the pass rush by rolling out, and defensive lines will have to be wary of his running the ball, which could slow them down. Whereas with Dalton, it will be like going after a sitting duck.

It does sound like Nagy will start Dalton in the first game. And it is hard to see him pulling him after one bad performance. I think he'd get at least 2 games, and the offense would have to look really bad at that point for him to get pulled for game 3. I think the likeliest scenario would be to bring him in after games 2 or 3. Game 3 if Dalton and offense look really bad. Game 4 if the offense looks bad or even decent, but the team is 1-3 or 0-4.

I can't wait to see what Justin Fields buys.
I bet her goes with city condo for a few years and then buys 1/2 of Lake Forest after he signs his 1/2 billion dollar extension in 2025....

Wow, grab a snack and cozy up for this LONG READ-

Ranking All 45 Bears Quarterbacks Since the Team Last Won the Super Bowl

https://www.theringer.com/nfl/2021/8/31/22648501/chicago-bears-qb-ranking-jay-cutler-mitch-trubisky-justin-fields

I forgot Sean Payton was our QB during the Spare Bears/Strike Season.
I always remembered Mike Hohensee who went on to coach the Chicago Bliz IIRC and won a title.

Erik Kramer (RIP), Curtis Conway and Jeff Graham was the best QB/WR combo I remember.
McMahon to Will Gault was pretty sweet, but Grahm and Conway were amazing that one season!
