Build a Franchise (Season 5) Bubble Tournament Edition- (Bubble schedule on page 21)
Previous thread- https://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=2115161
Couple of observations regarding free agency. First off, I appreciate everyone who responded with their input on how the process worked from the GM's perspective. I do think that this system worked about as well as I could have expected it to and I think that it is a usable system moving forward. There will obviously have to be a few adjustments moving forward. First off, from my perspective, the new system was overall less time consuming then last years system. I still spent almost the entire first day in front of the computer but it was far more organized only having the one PM per team. And by the middle of day two, the amount of time dropped considerably. That is far different then last year where the first 2-3 days were basically 19-20 straight hours a day in front of the computer reading and responding to bids. So, as far as time goes, this system worked better, especially after day one.
However, moving forward, I do believe there needs to be a few slight adjustments. With next years mega free agent class on the horizon, I do think that I will need more time initially than the 1-2 hours I allotted this year to review and respond to PM's. Considering the hurricane came through and we extended the bidding windows to three hours the first day, I do think this can be done while still keeping us moving. Something along the lines of 1-1.5 hours of bidding and then 2-3 hours of responding rather than the 3/1.5 ratio we worked with this year. Also to our benefit, we will have more time to work our offseason next year considering the NBA draft will move back to June in 2022. That pushes our FA up to late June/early July giving us far more time to run such an extensive FA as we will have in our reset year.
The other adjustment that I am thinking about is limiting the amount of players a team can bid on per PM. I don't want to handcuff teams but also can envision scenarios where teams place bids on 40-50 players at a time next year. That will be unmanageable if a significant number of teams do that. So, my thought is to cap the number of bids at 15-20 per team per PM. We did have a few teams place 10+ bids at a time this year and that definitely adds to the challenge. I think that certain teams maybe realized that this is not the best way to approach FA in that again, you place that many bids, you may get stuck with lower level players while missing out on your actual targets. But each team has their own process so I don't want to completely limit them either. If the actual bidding windows are only one hour each next year, this will help force teams to focus on who they actually want at what price point.
Lastly, as far as the main issue people seemed to have with this years process, the hidden Bird rights numbers. I agree that it creates an unfair advantage when select teams know how much cap space their competition has while theirs is kept hidden. That is something we can correct moving forward.
If anyone has any additional thoughts on FA, this years or next years, please let me know. Congratulations to all who improved their teams, I believe that there are a bunch of really talented teams in the league. Now we wait about ten weeks or so until the sim is released. Look for our season to start sometime around Thanksgiving.

Re: Build a Franchise (Season 5) Final offseason thread
Also, while we wait these long ten weeks or so, melo has suggested running another 2k bubble tourney. I know that NewEra and br7 have been broadcasting games this past week which is always fun and a good way to pass these long couple of months until the sim is released.
Melo has offered to run two games per night on Friday and Saturday nights. So if we do what we did last year and just make a simple 32 team NCAA style single elimination bracket, we can run 31 games in eight weeks which will bring us very near to our opening day for the sim.
A randomized schedule for this "2021 Bubble tourney" will be released shortly.

BISH the GOAT!
Glad to see FA went well and I agree with all the slight changes you want to make.
Hopefully we can release that bread4bish soon so you can take the family out for a nice dinner or something for you spending your weekend behind a computer for us!

I’m always thanking Bish cause he does a bulk of the work, and without him this game wouldn’t be what it has become, but I wanna take this opportunity to also say thanks to EVERYBODY for participating in this game that we’ve all come to love so much. It looks like our activity has solidified a season 6 which is excellent! BAF is definitely in a great place.

Scatterbidding would be a good bargain hunting process for sure.
My only feedback is take all the time you need between bid sessions. Time slots can truncate significantly as we go along.

Very much so. I feel like our timeslots should be limited. But if bish need 3 hours instead of 1.5 so be it. Whatever gets the job done.

I think the format worked pretty well on our end. Whatever works best for bish on his end in terms of the time slots. I am sure it takes a lot of time/work to tally everything up and makes sense to increase those windows so he can tally it all up.

Yep i agree our timeslots are not that important compared to Bish timeslots. I think even sending in our lists the night before like we did this year for the first timeslot could help as well considering how large next year draft class is.

I only bid on three players during the main portion of FA, each of which I won on and two of which I won with my first bid. That's my approach but I kinda kicked myself for not going more scatter with lower bids. You and Smash got some CRAZY deals.

Yea, maybe some extra time for bish to go thru those initial bid lists. There could even be a day for bish just to compile everything together before the frenzy begins.

Maybe even a soft start to free agency where we send in our 1st PM a week before free agency actually starts giving Bish time to got through that initial list because I have to assume that is the one that likely takes the most time to go through

I appreciate that Cap, I was happy to see you walking away as one of the biggest winners in FA too. The Conley deal has gone under the the radar, but teams will realize its impact when the regular season begins.

Thank you. It was there difference between potential contention and no shot, imo. We'll see how the rankings shake out though.

I say we limit the bids per PM even more down to 15 since it's the max roster size. Outside of that I'm fine with everything else.
