Grade the Nets 2021 Offseason

Losing Uncle Jeff does hurt but this offseason pretty much consolidates our status as contenders for the next few years. Also very excited about Cam Thomas he looks like a major steal.

Now hypothetically, if Kevin Love gets bought out (big IF I know), do we even want/need him?

I orginally rated the off-season a B. Mainly because I felt that not unloading DJ was a bit of a disappointment. Now that we have I'll upgrade it to a B+.

Upgrading my grade to an A from A- lol

It will be an A++ once Harden and KAI re-up.

Not sure how anyone can complain about anything. Shamet got replaced by a better player in Mills, we added Millsap and LMA to our front court at the expense of Green, we re-signed Griffin and Brown who were both huge parts of our rotation last year, we re-signed KD, we turned Dinwiddie (who didn't contribute at all last season) into 2nd round picks and a TPE, we dumped DJ and got a bunch of tax savings as a result at the cost of some 2nd rounders and even got a young player back in return, added some nice veteran depth in Carter and Johnson...I mean, we addressed our biggest issues from last year (front court depth, defense, toughness) and didn't lose anything from what made us great (we still have plenty of offensive firepower and our role players are comparable to last year if not better). We are also bound to be healthier this year with regards to our big 3, we were insanely unlucky last year.

We're gonna be a problem for the rest of the league.

The problem with playing bigger is that you get worse on both sides of the ball, just so you could grab a few more defensive rebounds. Yay?

Not even sure why people don't understand at this point. It's like so obvious, and yet people are still stuck with 90s era basketball in their heads. Go ahead, play a traditional PF and C lineup most of the game and watch your team get shredded. Everyone plays small nowadays, and everyone hunts mismatches to no end, so that their best offensive players are matched up with your worst defensive players. If you're playing two lumbering bigs, they now even have a choice. It's just stupid strategy, and yet people keep asking for it. It's confusing.

Your logic only tracks to a point, because you're making sweeping generalities.

Yes, teams hunt mismatches, especially in the postseason. At that point, I expect us to go small ball more than during the regular season. For the 82 game slate, most teams still go drop coverage, and the good teams do so to great success. The best teams, like Milwaukee and Phoenix last season, succeeded in part because they can switch modes, from a drop coverage to switch-heavy as needed. They also have bigs who don't get killed when you need to switch them onto smaller players.

I would not advocate for Jordan, or Drummond, or Gobert, or Gasol, or Nurkic or Valanciunas, or Adams or any number of plodding drop-only C's to pair with another true big. I also don't think those guys are playable in high-leverage playoff situations. But Griffin, and Johnson, and Millsap are guys who have shown despite their advanced age that they can manage to not get burnt to a crisp on a screen. Heck, Joe hasn't even proven that, and he sure doesn't offer a much offensively in these high-pressure situations, so what are we arguing?

Ok I am changing my grade from a C to an A. I gave them a c because I felt they didn’t address their biggest need , which was size and rebounding. Well they did that lol.

I thought the loss of Jeff green was huge. Replacing him with Millsap is acceptable. I think Millsap brings things that Green doesn’t and vice versa. Green is a better three point shooter and more athletic. But Millsap is a better scorer and rebounder.

The addition of LMA is great and DJ being traded is even better. I think the center and PF positions on the team are now the deepest. If two of the players play great then we are set.
