Unlikely, but if the Dems hold onto the house and get two seats in the Senate, I see expansion of the Supreme Court as a distinct possibility.

If I'm a Dem politician in the next election, every word not spent talking about abortion is a wasted word. This is a policy that is supported by 77% of the population. Republicans absolutely must be punished for this.

What the hell is going on in that shithole state called Texas? Forced births, Jim Crow laws, covid is out of control….. if the people of the state don’t vote out these Republican **** they have no one to blame but themselves. Yea the legislature is enacting voter suppression but they’re showing exactly how they’ll suppress the vote and people have more than a year to get organized and prepare. Democrats in Congress won’t save you. Texas is ground zero for how all Republican run states will look.

Let's see if the outrage lasts more than a week.

Afghanistan will be out of sight, out of mind within a few days - there's just no credible way to complain about ending a forever war.

But forced birth laws are a political gift to the dems that will keep on giving, every day from now until doomsday, if the dems will just accept the gift.

[Edit: Especially if overzealous Trumpers adopt these laws in other states, one after the other, right until the 2022 midterms]

The Republicans have already made the Supreme Court a court based on politics. We can't put the toothpaste back in the tube. Face the reality we've been handed and expand the court - now.

All this is well and good but unless these people are focusing their energy on how to get Democrats to win more Senate seats this is all tweeting into the wind. The holdout Senate Democrats don’t have the political will to reform the filibuster so this is all pointless signalling to the Twittersphere.

It’s only going to get worse from Republicans but the Democrats need to align on message discipline to make this an actual midterm issue. A sick part of this bill is that there’s no exemptions for rape or incest(which is just rape by another name in some cases). So are the Democrats going to label Republicans as pro rape babies? Probably not.

The TX forced pregnancy law not only has no exemption fr rape/incest,
it also has no provision for viability. Amazingly cruel but that’s who they
have been working hard to prove they are for quite some time.

One irony that’s been pointed out many times is that the impact of
the law will fall most heavily on poor and marginalized women who
can’t afford to travel out of state. It will take a generation but this
seems logically poised to lead to an increase in the demographic
group least likely to vote GOP.

That’s just an added benefit for Republicans.

Manchin being a performative piece of **** as always. Pelosi was brilliant to tie the vote for the bipartisan infrastructure bill to passing the reconciliation bill. I absolutely support the posture that Bernie is taking here, if Manchin is worried about costs he can take it out of the bipartisan bill. :dontknow:

Could the Dems pass a bill that would expand the court if Roe is overturned?
While it may initially seem fuzzy on checks and balances, I think it would actually be Congress putting a balance on the SCOTUS. Basically saying do your job of honoring precedence, or we will add justices to do it for you.
One thing that has limited the checks on the Judiciary is Moscow Mitch gutting the procedures which made it possible to ram through many judges and steal SCOTUS seats for Right wing radicals.

Democrats could reform the filibuster to not only reform the courts, but also legalize abortion. Pretty much every developed and sane country has legalized it, they could copy and paste the language if they wanted to. The filibuster is what’s in the way of a lot of meaningful legislation that the majority of Americans support. The crazy thing is that Congress could pass a bunch of laws and the courts could just strike them down without any type of checks or precedents.
