Equivalent of Simmons in other sports

Post#1 » by EasternHeretic » Tue Sep 14, 2021 8:24 am

Who is someone similarly talented and flawed? Can be unplayable in both a good and bad way. Is an excellent player even with their weaknesses, that if addressed, would put them at an MVP level, but never seems to cares about improving in that direction.

Mario Götze in soccer comes to mind. All the talent of the world but couldn't bring it on the court (consistently).

However, unlike Simmons he showed up when it mattered and scored Germany's winner in overtime of the 2014 World Cup final.

Also a more recent example (also German soccer player): Leroy Sane of Bayern Munich.

Billy Hamilton (MLB). He basically do it all but hit.

Good defender, good base runner, but can't hit.

Timo Warner is kind of close. Can do everything offensively in soccer except shoot (and stay onside). Is he was even an average shot he'd be one of the best in the world.

But he actually *tries* to shoot, he's just bad at it. It's hard to think of people who just refuse to perform, or develop, the most basic skill of their sport.

Baseball players coming up are rated on 5 tools - hitting, power, speed, defense, and arm. Hamilton would be labelled a 2 tool player.

I'll go with Evgeny Kuznetsov of the Caps - a super talent who seems like he should score 40 goals a season but doesn't look for his shot enough.

basketball players are uniquely suited to be stubborn because they are overpaid and they run the asylum too. it's not only that simmons can't,,,he doesn't want to as well.

Football: Marco Verratti. Amazing passing and tackling but he can become infuriating because of his hot temper and allergy to shooting/kicking the dern ball.
UFC got a few of promising fighters that seem to think they are too cool for school because Darren Till (low output no BJJ/Wrestling), Gastelum (and his awful diet) or Kevin Lee.

Most guys are accepted as having their flaws - yet we hate Simmons for not being able to shoot.

Dribbling is the most basic skill of basketball by far.

Dont think people dislike Simmoms as a player simply because he can't shoot. At least I dont.

I just don't want him on my team, regardless of how talented he is in other areas of the game.

Football fans watched him last night. Lamar Jackson. Elite athlete but everything about his passing motion is still off. Feet, ball position, release...everything. In year 4. Throws the ball downfield once in a blue moon. For every downfield throw 10 others are check downs or wildly off target.

I don't think it's about that, even though that's what the idiot talking heads and occasional fans keep saying. It's more that he disappears completely and takes himself out of games when there's any pressure, and seems to be in total denial about it. He's opting out of the basic conversation and social situation we're all aware of--he was bad for the 3rd year in a row in the PO, his team was a big disappointment again, he's a max player, and he's still like 'I don't know what people keep talking about, last I checked I played good defense and got some assists.' It's odd and maybe unprecedented for a player to take such limited accountability and not acknowledge basic stuff we're all aware of, even if I don't want him to be falling on his sword and apologizing endlessly.

(I also don't think we should be talking about 'hating' him, lotta other emotions and reactions at play.)

Pretty sure only Canadians will get this but Mitch Marner in hockey. He is exclusively a flashy passed and hasn't scored a goal in two playoff series despite being super high paid.He is also completely maligned by a rabid fanbase in Toronto much like Simmons is in Philly.
