Expectations of Cade are insanely high within the organization.
So I've been watching the Pistons since before their first title and I remember the advertisements before the new seasons throughout the years. They have gotten a hell of a lot more sophisticated since then, but I cannot remember a time(maybe Grant Hill, but even then I don't think it was like this)when advertisement, after advertisement was soley focused on a player like this, for the Pistons.
That last part is very important. It has almost always been about the team, or culture they were advertising to the Michigan crowd(blue color stuff, hard work, e.t.c.)not focused on a "superstar" or, this is very important, the expectations of superstardom. It is kinda crazy on YouTube, if you've seen that ad that starts with his draft selection.
Not only is this a new era in Pistons advertisement, but the expectations from within the organization are crazy high right now, to be billing everything on him, front and center. I sincerely hope he is ready, and more importantly, capable of delivering, and I also hope these unseen levels of expectations in this market for an NBA athlete, don't crush him underneath it.
I have never seen this level of focused advertising before in this market. Ever.

Re: Expectations of Cade are insanely high within the organization.
In fairness, the only other pick we had this high in the last 30 years (besides Hill) was a Euro-project who was joining a team that already had an established and marketable core.
So it makes sense.
Hope the attention is vindicated.

On the plus side, maybe players outside of the organization look at the efforts and say: "Wow. The Pistons are going all out to showcase Cade. Maybe playing for Detroit doesn't have to mean being sentenced to toil in relative obscurity".
Agreed that it's a lot of pressure though. Hopefully this last year has helped him prepare and build towards this.

He's used to the pressure of being hyped at this point I would imagine.

First #1 overall pick in 50 years + A horrendous team for the last 13 years = High anticipation.

After 20 straight championships, the basketball HOF will be renamed the "Cade Cunningham HOF" and we'll forget all about the likes of Jordan, Russell, and Bron Bron.

Cunningham was the #1 overall pick in a much hyped draft class. Fair or not, expectations should be high.

Re: Expectations of Cade are insanely high within the organization.
To be fair, there's a difference between hyping a player from a marketing standpoint, i.e an expectation that he looks and acts like the face of the franchise, and an expectation that he personally needs to be the solution to a championship. So from a marketing standpoint I think very high expectations are fair. He was a leader in college and the #1 draft pick, and I don't think there's anything wrong with saying "Ok kid, we're putting you out there as the leader of this team, the face of the franchise, and we're going to take care of you and get you what you need to succeed. So hold up your end of the deal."

Re: Expectations of Cade are insanely high within the organization.
After we get tired of winning all the time, Cade will be five-time Ultimate Smackdown Champion, a porn superstar, and President of the United States. The front-office is severely underestimating his career trajectory. The four-point shot wlll be renamed the Cade-point shot, much to the chagrin on Steph Curry and Fatoine Walker. His "You are #2" speech at the Jalen Green Memorial Dinner ("His game didn't adjust to my league..." yadda yadda yadda) will be required reading at the academy.
Potential, man, potential!

Re: Expectations of Cade are insanely high within the organization.
Where do people on here stand with his potential?
For me, Indy Paul George would be a great outcome. Cade doesn’t have the same game or athleticism but that kind of all star wing, number 1 on a solid playoff team type. Not comparing games, just “star” level I suppose.

Some degree of Middleton/Thompson/Tatum combination.
It's likely he could peak a "top 10 to 12" player in the league but its certainly unlikely that he is ever an MVP caliber top 5 player... simply because there are just so few of those guys out there.
I'd expect 6+ seasons of being an all-star from him if he stays healthy.

Re: Expectations of Cade are insanely high within the organization.
All NBA first team regular, league MVP a few times, a couple of titles at least.
I've never seen the Pistons land the #1 pick before, and I'm pretty sure no one else here has either.
His skill set is exact for today's NBA. He is a playmaking, defensive, 6'7 clutch gene having, 3 point shooter extraordinaire, #1 overall pick.
Those are my honest expectations. So far, everything I've seen of him screams he has "it".
It's okay as a fan to have high expectations.

I think the team has a high expectation that he sells the most jerseys and puts the most butts in seats.

Re: Expectations of Cade are insanely high within the organization.
james edwards of the athletic put out an article yesterday with results from a fan survey (1,148 fans). 49.3% expected cade to make 5+ all star games, 44.7% expected 3-5 and about 5% expected 1-2 with only a fraction of people expecting none.
and that's not an unreasonable expectation, imo. besides obvious busts (fultz, wiggins, bennett, etc.) most #1 picks go on to make at least three all star teams. that said, there's still a big difference between being an all star and being a franchise player.

Re: Expectations of Cade are insanely high within the organization.
Of course expectations for Cade are high within the organization.
This is a bottom of the barrel team, that really hasn't had any legit sizzle to it since Chauncey left in 2008. Even towards the end of the Billups era, it was fading quickly.
They haven't won a single playoff game since 2008. Before Cade their only top 5 pick in the last 26 years was a foreign prospect that nobody among the masses were ever going to latch onto unless he started to play well. After that pick in 2003, they never had a pick higher than #7 for 17 years after. Keeping in mind this is a team that only made the playoffs 2 times in the last 12 years, and again never won a single game.
The Pistons have probably been the most un-interesting team in the NBA for the last 15 years or so. This reflects in their fan attendance. They got a new arena in 2017, and attendance numbers have been embarrassing since day 1.
This is a franchise that has been starved for a legit star for an exhausting amount of time.
Cade Cunningham represents not only Detroit's first chance at a legit star for seemingly forever, but its the organization's first avenue in quite a long time to create some hype around the team to sell some tickets and move some merchandise.

Isiah Thomas was the main focus, right off the bat, after winning the NCAA title.

If you're using "insanely" as equivalent to "extremely" I'd have to agree. That's understandable when a team wins the lottery and has a freshly minted #1 pick. It seems natural a lot of the advertising would tend to focus on that acquisition, although I've read a lot about expected growth from Bey and Stewart as well as others. I also have pretty high expectations for a player whose only acknowledged weakness is being very athletic rather than 'insanely' athletic.

It's also important to note that marketing and the way the NBA has trended towards superstar focus has changed since the 80s and 90s too. From a business standpoint, it makes sense since one guy that's hyped and is a viral marketing sensation on the web can singlehandedly put the spotlight on a no name organization like no other.
It just so happens that Cade really has the potential to be that good and has the mental fortitude to boot. Makes it an easy sell to the fans and for Gores/Plat Equity to pump major marketing dollars all around their socials and Detroit

Re: Expectations of Cade are insanely high within the organization.
Glad we have him, he will be an all star, but I don't see him being a Superstar. I'm don't see any physical domination like Bron barrelling down the lane and crushing defenders out of the way.
He will be a very good shooter, from 3 and from midrange, he will be a good passer and ft shooter, he will be an all star, but not the next Greek Freak. He just doesn't have a physically dominant body like that.
But, I'm glad he isn't a super athletic freak like Williamson or Jalen Green. I think the wear and tear on knees and ankles and backs of those kinds of guys means they will be often injured and once those knees start getting injured the player can take a dive because so much of their game requires that athletic explosion.
Cade has the kind of body that will last because he will play within himself and still be an all star, and that makes me happy we got him

Seems like a reasonable assessment to me. Paul Pierce type of career would be a fantastic outcome.
