Imagine this starting 5
(we would have to trade Luke Kennard, Eric Bledsoe & Serge Ibaka to make this happen.

PG - John Wall / Terrance Mann / J. Preston
SG - Reggie Jackson / BJ Boston / Keon Johnson
SF - Paul George / Nicholas Batum / Jay Scrubb
PF - Kawhi Leonard (Marcus Morris) / Justice Winslow
C - Ivica Zubac / H. Giles

I think you are forgetting that John Wall is an average point guard now. It's not the 2017 John Wall.
Paul, Westbrook, Doncic, Trea, Lillard, Harden, Morant, Simmons, Holiday, Curry, Murray, Lowery, Irving, Ball, Conley are all better starting point guards, which at best lands Wall somewhere around 15th - 18th best point guard, and 70th and 90th best player in the league.

I think John Wall is pretty far below an average point guard now. He can still pass the ball, but he also turns it over a lot, is a terrible shooter, doesn't defend well, and missed over 40% of his team's games in his "comeback" year last year. A *lot* more minuses than pluses. Don't want him at any price.

The one thing I don't understand about all of this Wall talk is that the Clippers traded Beverly for Bledsoe to: open up a roster spot, get a player that isn't as often injured and save some money.

While acquiring Wall would open up more roster slots, we aren't at the roster crunch that we were at during the Bev trade, so doesn't help much.

Wall has the same availability concerns that Beverley did, so doesn't help there.

Wall makes a lot more, so not only would we paying more in his salary, but also to clear up the open roster slots will also cost $$$.

https://rocketswire.usatoday.com/2021/04/26/john-wall-believes-hes-still-an-all-star-big-time-player-for-rockets/

In comments made after his strong showing (27 points, 13 assists) in last Friday’s extremely competitive loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, here’s what Wall said about his return season and his outlook for the future:

I read all the haters, the fans. They say I’m not nothing, or the team’s not nothing. We know this is not the way we wanted the season to go, but we dealt with a lot of injuries. We got a team we’re sort of rebuilding, trying to find the pieces to move forward with. But I have a lot of trust in it and know we’ll have a better year next year. …

I still think I’m an All-Star in this league. I still think I’m a big-time player in this league. In the last two years, there’s a lot of talent that came into this league, and there’s a lot of guys that are still in this league that were talented before I got injured. But I feel like when I’m healthy, I can go against the best of them.

Wall first and foremost needed to show that he could play at the highest levels, again.

From that individual perspective, the 30-year-old has largely succeeded. In 40 games played, Wall is averaging 20.6 points and 6.9 assists in 32.2 minutes per game, and he’s the clear leader in Houston’s locker room. “My job this season was to come back and show people that I still have a lot left in the tank. I think I’ve proven that,” Wall said. “The most important thing is for me to have a great summer by keeping my body healthy, preparing myself for an 82-game season.”

didn't really see Wall play and don't know if he got stronger over the summer
but I wouldn't miss any of these three, sorry

interesting that those stats say it's a pretty even trade
I would not be surprised if the Clips have already offered it but Houston is holding out for a needle-mover like Simmons

I don't think we can afford to trade Morris Sr. Kawhi out all year, who know when/if Ibaka will play.

You can swap out Morris and insert Ibaka ("who knows when/if Ibaka will play") into the trade and the salaries still work out

http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yhshrowy

If Wall agrees to exercise his opt-out for the 2nd year to make it happen, and if we're getting some lottery protected picks and/or 2nd rounders (which we often optimize)... it becomes a lot more interesting...

Becomes 1 year of Wall for 1 year of Bled+Ibaka / dump of Kennard's deal / adding picks and 2 roster spots.

If he does get bought out, I hope he does not leave more than two-year vet minimum on the table. He hasn't earned it, but teams need to learn not throw away max contracts to anyone in the salary cap era.

He has been a trooper in Houston and FWIW I believe he would give the Clippers whatever he's got left in that body. I also feel he could improve his efficiency this season on a good squad, since last year was his comeback year.

But we don't have enough bad money to match his contract. I don't want to lose either Morris or Ibaka, unless we pick up a replacement big (via TPE or whatever.)
