This isn't the NBA having one or two great players doesn't make you a great D. Browns have an average defense.
The Browns were rated the 3rd best defense last year. What you thought it was Baker Mayfield who made them good last year? Anyone who watches football regularly knows the browns are one of the best defenses in the NFL. They have one of the best edge rushing tandems in Clowney and Myles Garret, they also have a ball hawk in Denzel ward and a stud rookie DB in Greg Newsome who went to Northwestern and was a first round pick this year. Fields is not going to have an easy time.
If he looks good against the Brown defense there will be much to be excited about.

I just hope Nagy does some minimal fitting the gameplan/playbook around Fields--then he's got a shot.
But so far Nagy's past experience (Mitch/Foles) does not give me much hope.

Nagy will provide 5-10 RPO plays that are outside of his dink release concepts. Maybe call a couple more deep drops. It wont be like a brand new sheet of deep route options. He will always run his base system. If Justin throws a bunch past the sticks it will be a surprise to me.

Bro, he’s not knowing the Browns D is legit if Fields ball out against that D than it’s on even if Fields struggles it’s understandable

For people who have been here a while, there was *that* Derrick Rose HS Mixtape that you could just watch and marvel at what he would become. I probably watched that thing 100 times between the time we won the lottery and the time he played his first game.
Looking at Youtube and I guess the closest analog would be this video:
He shows it all in this game on the biggest stage not called the NFL. I have no idea what comes to us on Sunday, but I'm pumped.

Yeah I got to agree that the Fields fever is mostly emotion, not thought.Dresden wrote:fleet wrote:I am fairly convinced that Clowney and Garrett are going to terrorize our tackles and ruin this debut. As Eisen points out, how much better off would Fields be right now in game 3 against the Browns if he was the guy starting game 1. The Bears are simply behind now for now good reason.
I hadn’t thought about the awesome fact that this game is in Ohio for some reason.
Judging by how Fields played in last weeks game, there is a good chance we'd be 0-2 right now, not 1-1. This is an impossible argument to win, because whenever Dalton plays average, or poorly, it's viewed as evidence that Fields should play. But whenever Fields performs poorly, it's either a) because he wasn't the starter from day one, b) he's going against a great defense (as if Dalton wasn't v. Rams), or c) it's excusable because we know he will get better.
When in fact, Nagy has decided that right now, Dalton gives the Bears the best chance to win, and that's why he was given the starting job (barring poor health).
The idea that only playing a few snaps in game 1 will somehow be the reason he might fail Sunday is pretty far out there.

Huh? You think that him not getting any playing time won't have anything to do with how he plays in game 3? I'm not sure how one can come to that conclusion.Stratmaster wrote:Yeah I got to agree that the Fields fever is mostly emotion, not thought.Dresden wrote:fleet wrote:I am fairly convinced that Clowney and Garrett are going to terrorize our tackles and ruin this debut. Agreed. If he fails, it's going to because we don't have the personnel to turn a raw, injury-prone rookie in Season 1 into a seasoned pro. What we're asking him to do is similar to what we've asked others to do through the years, which is be the one dude who solves all problems. Not smart. I hate Nagy. I should've known he would be pressured into this.

Re: Bears talk 2.0; Fields era begins for real for real
I don't have high expectations for Fields in this game.
It's still too early in his career and he didn't look all that good against a much worse defense last week. I won't worry even if he looks very poor in this game. That said, if he has a great game that could really be something. I think the odds of a great game are really low here though.

Re: Bears talk 2.0; Fields era begins for real for real
I'm not as high on Fields starting as everyone else. Dalton has been playing very well until he got hurt and that's with Nagy's play calling holding back. Fields didn't look that good when he came in. You could tell most of it was jitters so hopefully he got that out of his system and there were a couple plays where the team didn't help either. But from what we've seen so far this season, Dalton is best suited to help the bears make a playoff run.
Obviously, best case scenario is Fields plays lights out but its more likely he plays like Trevor Lawrence has and if thats the case, the fanbase should want Dalton back out there when healthy

I'd have higher hopes if Nagy wasn't calling plays. However, so far this season, the Browns' defense has played below expectations so maybe it won't be as bad as everyone on TV is making it out to be.

I hate to be negative this season, especially since I think this is the bears best chance to make noise in the playoffs since the trubisky era started, but Nagy being the coach really kills any hopes I have.
He really is Gase 2.0.

Re: Bears talk 2.0; Fields era begins for real for real
People say Fields didn't look good coming in and that's because as a backup or in Fields case a scout team quarterback you aren't getting a lot of reps in practice. You certainly aren't getting any with the starters.
Some of the reasons not to start make no sense really.
"The offensive line is questionable." It was always going to be questionable considering the plan was to start a rookie at left tackle who unfortunately got hurt.
"Nagy is calling plays." So you sit Fields until Nagy gives up the playcalling when he was reluctant to do that last season?
"Let's see how Dalton looks." Why would you need to see how a quarterback on a one-year deal looks? Dalton is a known commodity.
This is a basketball board. If the Bulls traded up in the draft to take someone in the lottery and yet the team sat them behind a 33-year-old on a one-year deal people would be livid.

Losing to get high draft picks and hoping they turn into franchise players is not some next level, genius move. That's what teams want to happen in any rebuild/tank or whatever you want to market it as.

Re: Bears talk 2.0; Fields era begins for real for real
I do have high hopes for Fields in this game. I mean why not? I'm a Bears fan and he's the best qb prospect we've had. Why wouldn't I have high hopes? Because the Browns defense is good? F the Browns. He's got the talent, he's knows how to play the position. I mean I won't think he's a bust if he doesn't do well but why can't he come out and play great? Heck, why can't he be MVP? Why not?
Yes I'm a homer. It's why I'm here.

2 passing TDs 2 rushing TDs and a W for JF1 on his debut.
Oh, I want Trash Nagy fired after this season if Justin Fields says so.

Cut it out with the gaslighting. He played 8 games last year-- a tad over half the season in college-- and then came out and had a groin injury in camp which caused him to cede the job to Andy. He fell in the draft because he is raw, and currently has a quarterback rating of 7.4, so believe it or not, he's raw.
